Regulation of systemic metabolism by the autonomic nervous system consisting of afferent and efferent innervation.

Autonomic nerves, sympathetic and parasympathetic, innervate organs and modulate their functions. It has become evident that afferent and efferent signals of the autonomic nervous system play important roles in regulating systemic metabolism, thereby maintaining homeostasis at the whole-body level. Vagal afferent nerves receive signals, such as nutrients and hormones, from the peripheral organs/tissues including the gastrointestinal tract and adipose tissue then transmit these signals to the hypothalamus, thereby regulating feeding behavior. In addition to roles in controlling appetite, areas

Severe bradycardia and hypotension induced by autonomic neuropathy in a diabetic patient during general anesthesia - A case report.

Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is characterized by dysregulation of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems that causes cardiovascular and respiratory disorders. The number of diabetic patients undergoing surgery is increasing in line with the prevalence of DM. Anesthesiologists should pay attention to diabetic patients with CAN because it is related to serious cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We report an 80-year-old male who underwent cervical laminoplasty. He had severe bradycardia and hypotension from induction to the suspension of surgery. His blood pressure drop…

Bevantolol attenuates thiazide stimulated renin secretion and catecholamine release in diuretic resistant hypertensives.

An attempt was made to establish whether cardioselective beta-blockade could counteract the stimulation by hydrochlorothiazide of the renin-angiotensin and sympathetic nervous systems and to what extent such actions contributed to the antihypertensive effect of bevantolol. The hemodynamic and neurohumoral responses of 21 thiazide resistant hypertensives who had received sequential chronic therapy with hydrochlorothiazide, hydrochlorothiazide combined with bevantolol and bevantolol monotherapy were compared. In these patients, bevantolol had a negative chronotropic effect and appeared, when adm…

Role of G(s)α in central regulation of energy and glucose metabolism.

GNAS is a complex imprinted locus with multiple oppositely imprinted gene products, including the G protein α-subunit Gsα that is expressed … system and that Gsα deficiency in one or more regions of the central nervous system lead to reduced sympathetic nervous system and energy expenditure without affecting food intake. Loss of Gsα in the central nervous system appears to lead to these effects primarily through impairment of melanocortin signaling. Loss of XLαs in mice leads to opposite effects on energy and glu …

Renal nerves and hypertension: an update.

Increased efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity could facilitate the development of hypertension by shifting the arterial pressure-renal sodium excretion curve to the right. Accordingly, interruption of the renal nerves should prevent the development of hypertension in animal models in which increased sympathetic nervous system activity has been implicated. Renal denervation delays the development of hypertension and results in greater sodium excretion in the Okamoto and New Zealand spontaneously hypertensive rat and in the deoxycorticosterone acetate-salt-treated rat, which suggests that …

[The role of beta-adrenoreceptors in pathogenesis of neurogenic dystrophies].

Sciatic nerve damage led to a defective functioning of the renal mineralocorticoid receptors due to the disturbed neurotrophic supply of this organ: the reception of distorted nervous stimuli. The pharmacological blockade of both the neurotransmitter and the humoral pathways of the pathological stimuli from the damaged nerve to the kidney prevented the development of trophic disturbances as tested by the state of the renal mineralocorticoid receptor system. At the same time, the pharmacological stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system leads to an even more defective aldosterone reception …

Autonomic nervous system evaluation of patients with vasomotor rhinitis.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the utility of quantitative neurological laboratory testing of autonomic nervous system dysfunction and to apply this methodology to further study the relation of chronic vasomotor (nonallergic) rhinitis to the autonomic nervous system. METHODS: It has been suspected that vasomotor rhinitis is due either to a hyperactive parasympathetic nervous system or an imbalance between it and the sympathetic nervous system. The exact relation has not been determined. Recently neurological laboratories have been developed in which a battery of tests can be performed to determine…

Autonomic dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

Autonomic dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) has been recognized since the original description by James Parkinson in 1817. Autonomic failure can be the clinical presentation of other diseases like pure autonomic failure (PAF) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Both the central and peripheral autonomic nervous systems can be affected in PD. Rajput and Rozdilsky described cell loss and Lewy bodies within the sympathetic ganglia and antibodies to sympathetic neurons have been detected in PD patients. Lewy bodies can be seen in autonomic regulatory regions, including the hypoth

Misdirected Sympathy: The Role of Sympatholysis in Sepsis and Septic Shock.

The spectrum of sepsis and septic shock remains a highly prevalent disease state, carrying a high risk of morbidity and mortality. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) plays an important role in this initial cascade, enabling the host to respond to invading pathogens; however, prolonged activation can become pathological. The potential for unregulated sympathetic tone to become of detriment in patients with sepsis has fueled interest in the role and impact of sympatholysis, the selective inhibition of sympathetic tone. The cornerstone of septic shock therapy for decades has been the supplement…

[Physiology and pathophysiology of subarachnoid and epidural block (author's transl)].

The most important patho-physiological changes following subdural or epidural blockade are seen in the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. Preganglionic sympathetic blockade is the main reason for these changes. Sympathetic blockade is followed by a decrease in peripheral vascular resistence and alterations in the arterial and venous circulation. Hypotension occurs frequently and is thus of great interest in clinical anaesthesia. Differences in the degree of nerve block are not only seen when comparing spinal and peridural blockade but also relate to the different pharmacodynamic

Chronic heart failure: a disease of the brain.

The underlying mechanism for clinical and biochemical manifestations of chronic heart failure (HF) may be due in part to neurohumoral adaptations, such as activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and sympathetic nervous systems in the periphery and the brain. Internet search and discussion with colleagues are the methods for this study. Since chronic HF is associated with autonomic imbalance with increased sympathetic nerve activity and a withdrawal of parasympathetic activity, it may be considered a brain disease. This phenomenon may be the result of an increased systemic and cerebral …

Neural mechanisms and management of obesity-related hypertension.

The sympathetic nervous system is activated in human obesity and in the analogous experimental obesity produced by overfeeding. The causes remain uncertain and may be multiple. The consequences include hypertension, probably attributable to activation of the sympathetic outflow to the kidneys, and, more disputed, insulin resistance. The pattern of sympathetic activation in normal-weight and obesity-related hypertension differs in terms of the firing characteristics of individual sympathetic fibers (increased rate of nerve firing in normal-weight hypertensives, increased number of active fibers…

Neuroendocrine mechanisms of acupuncture in the treatment of hypertension.

Hypertension affects approximately 1 billion individuals worldwide. Pharmacological therapy has not been perfected and often is associated with adverse side effects. Acupuncture is used as an adjunctive treatment for a number of cardiovascular diseases like hypertension. It has long been established that the two major contributors to systemic hypertension are the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system and chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Recent evidence indicates that in some models of cardiovascular disease, blockade of AT1 receptors in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (rVL…

Surgical Lumbar Sympathectomy in Mice.

Peripheral nerve injuries are common, and full functional recovery after injury is achieved in only 10% of patients. The sympathetic nervous system plays many critical roles in maintaining bodily homeostasis, but it has rarely been studied in the context of peripheral nerve injury. The extent of postganglionic sympathetic neuronal functions in distal targets in the periphery is currently unclear. To better explore the role of sympathetic innervation of peripheral targets, a surgical "knock-out" model provides an alternative approach. Although this can be achieved chemically, chemical destructi…

Combined effect of prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation and a working memory task on heart rate variability.

Prefrontal cortex activity has been associated with changes to heart rate variability (HRV) via mediation of the cortico-subcortical pathways that regulate the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system. Changes in HRV due to altered prefrontal cortex functioning can be predicted using the neurovisceral integration model, which suggests that prefrontal hyperactivity increases parasympathetic tone and decreases contributions from the sympathetic nervous system. Working memory (WM) tasks and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have been used independently…

[Changes in the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system in human aging. meta-analysis.].

It is known that with the aging, the adaptive capabilities of his body decrease. This is due to both changes in autonomic regulation and morphological remodeling of the cardiovascular system. To assess age-related changes in the autonomic nervous and cardiovascular systems, a meta-analysis was carried out, which examined changes in the aging of hemodynamic parameters [blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR)], heart rate variability (HRV), catecholamine concentrations, electrical activity of muscle sympathetic nerves (MSHA) , as well as the magnitude of the BR. The results of 32 works from the
