OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether the initial Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI) was associated with pneumonia after spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH) in hospitalized patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with SICH admitted to Taizhou People's Hospital between January 2019 and December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Baseline variables were compared between stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) and non-SAP groups. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were utilized to calculate the relationship between SIRI and SAP risk.
RESULTS: Of 495 patients included in

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) frequently triggers systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). SIRS has been associated with inferior outcomes and, specifically, delayed cerebral infarction after aneurysmal SAH. Here, we assess the impact of intracranial blood clearance through stereotactic catheter ventriculocisternostomy on SIRS in patients with aneurysmal SAH.
METHODS: We assessed daily SIRS criteria (heart rate > 90 beats/min, respiratory rate > 20 breaths/min or abnormal respiratory coefficient, temperature > 38 °C or < 36 °C, white blood cell count < 4000 or > …

AIMS: This study investigates the relationship between the Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI) and thyroid function.
METHODS: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2012, we excluded participants lacking SIRI or thyroid function data, those under 20 years, and pregnant individuals. SIRI was determined using blood samples. We conducted weighted multivariate regression and subgroup analyses to discern the independent relationship between SIRI and thyroid function.
RESULTS: The study included 1,641 subjects, with an average age of 47.26±16

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced the Severe Sepsis/Septic Shock Management Bundle (SEP-1) as a pay-for-reportin … (eCQM) that is an important step in this direction. The eCQM preliminarily identifies sepsis using systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria, antibiotic administrations or diagnosis codes for infection or sepsis, and clinical indicators of acute organ dysfunction. We support the eCQM but recommend removing SIRS criteria and diagnosis codes to streamline implementation, de …

PURPOSE: In light of the growing concern over the possible link between SARS-CoV2 infection and autoimmune diseases, we conducted a review to investigate the impact of the pandemic outbreak on thyroid diseases.
METHODS: We carried out a narrative review of all pediatric cases described in the literature, mainly focusing on the possible association of COVID-19 with the incidence of autoimmune and post-infective thyroid diseases (namely Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (HT), Grave's Disease (GD) and Sub-Acute Thyroiditis (SAT)). We also felt it was necessary to provide a brief review of Non-thyroidal Il

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-associated multisystem inflammatory syndrome in adults (MIS-A) requires distinguishing it from acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and may affect clinical management.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we applied the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention case definition to identify adults hospitalized with MIS-A at 6 academic medical centers from 1 March 2020 to 31 December 2021. Patients MIS-A were matched by age group, sex, site, and admission date at a 1:2 ratio to patients hos

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a condition characterized by organic dysfunction, leading to hemodynamic instability and high morbidity and mortality rates in humans and animals. Early identification of perfusion changes and appropriate management of sepsis are crucial for improving patient prognosis. Currently, the Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores are widely studied for sepsis identification and evaluation of organ dysfunction. However, these scores do not assess gastrointestinal involvement, which is common in this condition. Contrast…

INTRODUCTION: Although children seem to be less susceptible to COVID-19, some of them develop a rare but serious hyperinflammatory condition called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). While several studies describe the clinical conditions of acute MIS-C, the status of convalescent patients in the months after acute MIS-C is still unclear, especially the question of persistence of changes in the specific subpopulations of immune cells in the convalescent phase of the disease.
METHODS: We therefore analyzed peripheral blood of 14 children with MIS-C at the onset of the diseas

OBJECTIVE: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare yet serious pathological consequence of SARS-CoV-2 infection which is reported 4-12 weeks after the onset of COVID-19 in children and adolescents. The most common hyper-inflammatory conditions mimicking the clinical presentation of MIS-C include Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome. The surveillance criteria of MIS-C were recently revised by US Center for Disease Control and Prevention to improve diagnostic precision. Although previous studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2 antibody titers correlate with COVID-19 sever

There have been several reports across the globe regarding the presentation of a severe multi-system hyperinflammatory syndrome, resembling Kawasaki disease (KD), in the pediatric population during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The exact pathophysiology is still unclear; however, children typically demonstrate multi-organ dysfunction and less respiratory system involvement compared to adults. The limited literature is available at present for the identification and management of such patients. In this study, we investigated four cases in children ages 11-15 years that fulfilled the case definition

BACKGROUND Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in adults (MIS-A) is an uncommon condition after a confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, manifesting as multiorgan failure despite apparent resolution of initial symptoms. While this syndrome shares similar characteristics with a syndrome found in children, fewer cases are reported in adults. This report details a 31-year-old man fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of MIS-A, who was successfully resuscitated following cardiac arrest. CASE REPORT A 31-year-old man was admitted to the intensive care unit for

UNLABELLED: Children are the future of the world, but their health and future are facing great uncertainty because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In order to improve the management of children with COVID-19, an international, multidisciplinary panel of experts developed a rapid advice guideline at the beginning of the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020. After publishing the first version of the rapid advice guideline, the panel has updated the guideline by including additional stakeholders in the panel and a comprehensive search of the latest evidence. All recommendations were

A wide spectrum of cutaneous manifestations are reported in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). However, gangrenous changes are less frequently reported. A 3-year old boy, with a known case of unoperated tetralogy of Fallot, presented with a short history of fever, rash, and melena. The rash was black and diffuse, with a rapid progression. The patient was stable hemodynamically at admission, with pallor, grade II clubbing, edema, and oral ulcers. Inflammatory markers were raised. He developed gangrenous changes over the ears and acral areas. He had very high levels of antibo
