In this work, a new approach for treating tannery wastewaters (TWWs) was applied, beginning with a coagulation-flocculation pretreatment. Chromium (Cr) commonly enters the food chain through uptake by vegetables. However, accurate prediction of plant uptake of Cr (and other metals) still remains a challenge. In this study, we evaluated 5 indices of availability for Cr (and other metals) to identify reliable predictors of metal transfer from soils to garlic, onion, bokchoy, radish and celery grown in soils impacted by tannery wastes. A warm and moist environment is a common risk factor for erythrasma, a condition characterized by pruritic, scaly and erythematous tan patches on the skin. Here we report on a 13-year-old athletic student presenting with pruritus and mild burning on her left medial thigh, and subsequently diagnosed with erythrasma. The patient was successfully treated with a 5-day regimen of Travocort cream containing isoconazole nitrate 1% and diflucortolone valerate 0.1%.

Malakoplakia of the urinary bladder following cadaveric renal transplantation in a twenty-two-year-old woman is reported. Urinary tract infection with Escherichia coli persisted postoperatively. Three years later, gross hematuria and fever occurred. Yellow-tan mucosal plaques or nodules were observed cystoscopically, and histologic examination revealed malakoplakia of the urinary bladder with characteristic foamy histiocytes containing Michaelis-Gutmann bodies.

Rhinosporidiosis was diagnosed in a black and tan coonhound. Clinical signs were characterized by 6 to 8 months of intermittent sneezing. Numerous polypoid nodules were removed from the nasal cavity. Histologic examination of the nodules revealed chronic pyogranulomatous inflammation caused by infection with Rhinosporidium seeberi. Rhinosporidiosis has been reported in human beings, dogs, and several other domestic species. It is an uncommon disease in the United States.

This study compared litter size, litter weight, and lambing type across four parities in 256 Hu sheep and 90 Tan sheep and evaluated six candidate SNPs in Hu sheep. This study aimed to identify key proteomic analytes correlated with response to splenectomy in primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).
