Detail memory for similar short stories among older and younger adults.

Studies of pattern separation have consistently shown poorer performance among older adults when identifying perceptually similar objects compared to younger adults, despite equal performance at recognizing repeated objects. Additionally, tasks that embed or overlay objects on contexts reliably show benefits from repeating the context but detriments when the context is shifted, particularly for older adults. However, it remains unclear as to how performance on these tasks generalize to everyday memory functioning. Pattern separation is likely critical for utilizing not only subtle perceptual d

Changes in balance coordination and transfer to an unlearned balance task after slackline training: a self-organizing map analysis.

How humans maintain balance and change postural control due to age, injury, immobility or training is one of the basic questions in motor control. One of the problems in understanding postural control is the large set of degrees of freedom in the human motor system. Therefore, a self-organizing map (SOM), a type of artificial neural network, was used in the present study to extract and visualize information about high-dimensional balance strategies before and after a 6-week slackline training intervention. Thirteen subjects performed a flamingo and slackline balance task before and after the t

Neonatal nurse staffing and delivery of clinical care in the SSBC Newborn Network.

OBJECTIVE: To measure nursing workload and timely completion of essential tasks in relation to the staffing levels recommended by the British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) in Staffordshire, Shropshire and Black Country Newborn Network. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted measuring the time taken by selected nurses to undertake the necessary tasks for babies receiving different levels of care in the Network's six constituent neonatal units. An independent observer was used. The unit and individual's workload was evaluated against BAPM standards. Delays in essent

Impact of ambiguity and risk on decision making in mild Alzheimer's disease.

Decisions under ambiguity and decisions under risk are crucial types of decision making in daily living at any age. This is the first study assessing these two types of decisions in patients with mild dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT) by means of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and a newly developed, Probability-Associated Gambling (PAG) task. While rules for gains and losses are implicit in the IGT, in the PAG task rules are explicit and winning probabilities, which change from trial to trial, can be estimated. Results of the IGT indicated that DAT patients made more disadvantageous decisions t

Inverted EEG theta lateralization in dyslexic children during phonological processing.

The phonological deficit hypothesis of dyslexia has been investigated in the present research by analysing language-related lateralization of the EEG theta band in a sample of dyslexic children. To this aim, a paradigm based on word-pair visual presentation was used in which the same words were processed in Semantic and Phonological tasks. Theta band amplitude, a cortical index that has been related to working memory processing, was analysed during four different phases of word elaboration, thus allowing to measure also the temporal dynamics of word reading/encoding in the verbal working memor

Frontal gamma-alpha ratio reveals neural oscillatory mechanism of attention shifting in tinnitus.

In clinical practice, the symptoms of tinnitus patients can be temporarily alleviated by diverting their attention away from disturbing sounds. However, the precise mechanisms through which this alleviation occurs are still not well understood. Here, we aimed to directly evaluate the role of attention in tinnitus alleviation by conducting distraction tasks with multilevel loads and resting-state tests among 52 adults with tinnitus and 52 healthy controls. We demonstrated that the abnormal neural oscillations in tinnitus subjects, reflected in an altered gamma/alpha ratio index in the frontal l

Executive function in Down syndrome: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Executive function (EF) refers to a set of cognitive processes involved in goal-oriented behavior-especially inhibition, attention shifting, and working memory. EF has been identified as a probable area of difficulty in Down syndrome (DS), but the exact nature of the difficulty has not been well-established. AIMS: The meta-analysis sought to confirm or disconfirm EF as an area of difficulty in DS and elucidate an EF profile. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted on 57 studies that compared a group with DS to a typically developing (TD) mental age ma

Visuomotor adaptation and savings to constant and varying visual feedback delays in a driving simulator.

Perturbations to visual feedback disrupt one's ability to use vision to guide movement, leading to disrupted visuomotor control. The visuomotor adaptation mechanism recovers control by updating the visuomotor mapping to accommodate the visual perturbation during movement. A hallmark of adaptation is savings, where individuals demonstrate faster adaptation upon subsequent exposure to the same perturbation. Although faster adaptation to a previously experienced delay has been observed in response to constant visual feedback delays in two-dimensional tracking tasks, they have not been investigate

Mental load in women and mothers: Causes of distress, personality traits, and psychopathology.

Mental load has received increasing public attention, particularly following societal changes such as the COVID-19 pandemic and shifts toward greater gender equality. However, despite its societal relevance, it remains comparatively under-researched. Following a literature review on mental load, two cross-sectional online survey studies systematically examined the burden of invisible (mental load) versus visible household and caregiving work, the causes of this burden, and associations with personality traits and psychological symptoms (affect, anxiety, depressiveness). Participants were recru

Electrophysiological aftereffects of high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS): an EEG investigation.

There is evidence that high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) is effective in improving behavioural performance in several visual tasks. However, so far there has been limited research into the spatial and temporal characteristics of hf-tRNS-induced facilitatory effects. In the present study, electroencephalogram (EEG) was used to investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of cortical activity modulated by offline hf-tRNS on performance on a motion direction discrimination task. We used EEG to measure the amplitude of motion-related VEPs over the parieto-occipital co

Evaluating Proactive Strategy in Patients With OCD During Stop Signal Task.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate "Proactive-Adjustment hypothesis" (PA) during the Stop Signal Task (SST). The PA is implied in the highly inconsistent literature, and it deals with the role of response inhibition (RI) in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This hypothesis assumed that participants would balance stopping and going by adjusting the response threshold (RT) in the go task. We verified whether the PA strategy was also implemented in our clinical group. METHODS: To reach this goal, we analyzed SST performances in a group of 36 patients with OCD and 36 h

Mirtazapine and ketanserin alter preference for gambling-like schedules of reinforcement in rats.

Drug and behavioral addictions have overlapping features, e.g., both manifest preference for larger, albeit costlier, reinforcement options in cost/benefit decision-making tasks. Our prior work revealed that the mixed-function serotonergic compound, mirtazapine, attenuates behaviors by rats motivated by abused drugs. To extend this work to behavioral addictions, here we determined if mirtazapine and/or ketanserin, another mixed-function serotonin-acting compound, can alter decision-making in rats that is independent of drug (or food)-motivated reward. Accordingly, we developed a novel variable

Total output and switching in category fluency successfully discriminates Alzheimer's disease from Mild Cognitive Impairment, but not from frontotemporal dementia.

UNLABELLED: Verbal fluency tasks require generation of words beginning with a letter (phonemic fluency; PF) or from a category (category fluency; CF) within a limited time period. Generally, total output on CF has been used to discriminate Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) from Alzheimer's disease (AD), while poor PF has been used as a marker for behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). However, in the absence of this disparate performance, further characterization of the task becomes necessary. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether fluency, as well as its components, clustering (successive

The effects of glove thickness and work load on female hand performance and fatigue during a infrequent high-intensity gripping task.

In various workplaces, gloves are commonly employed to protect the hands with the design rationale of 'the thicker the gloves, the better the protection'. Therefore, the present paper investigated the effects of glove thickness on hand performance and fatigue during two infrequent high-intensity gripping tasks, such as 5-s and sustained tasks. The hand performance was evaluated by maximum volitional contraction (MVC) and its associated time needed to reach the MVC (TMVC), and the total force generation (TFG) during the sustained task. The hand fatigue was assessed by MVC degeneration (DeltaMVC

Text-guided cross-position attention for image analysis: Case of medical image.

In this study, we propose a novel text-guided cross-position attention module that aims to apply multimodality text and images to position attention in medical image segmentation. To match the dimension of the text feature to that of the image feature map, learnable parameters are multiplied by text features and combined with multimodal semantics via cross-attention. This allows the model to learn the dependencies between various text and image characteristics. The proposed model demonstrated superior performance in comparisons with other image-only or image-text data medical models. The modul

EXPRESS: How error rates scale with chance rate among dogs following human pointing gestures, and why it matters.

Humans use pointing gestures to communicate with dogs. However, efforts to study how dogs receive this communicative signal have produced ambiguous results. Prior work presenting a choice between two options has shown that dogs choose the pointed-to option at above chance levels, but just barely. With only two options, the high probability of choosing correctly by chance weakens the signal. After replicating the 2-option task, we changed the task's parameters by presenting dogs with six options. We compared two models that make divergent, quantitative predictions on how the success rates will

Variability in Preprocessing and Analysis of the Error-Related Negativity in Adult Response-Conflict Studies: A Systematic Review.

The analysis of EEG (electroencephalography) data affords many defensible choices, creating substantial researcher degrees of freedom. While stimulus-locked components such as the N400 show wide methodological variability and incomplete reporting, it has been unclear whether this generalizes to the response-locked error-related negativity (ERN). We conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review of ERN studies published 1995-2025. From a chronologically stratified sample of 202 studies of adults using conventional response-conflict tasks and conventional ERP analyses, we extracted preprocessing an

A teacher's lens on student motivation: a three-year longitudinal study of NCS students' Chinese writing motivation in Hong Kong.

Motivation is fundamental to foreign language learning, yet little longitudinal evidence exists on how young multilingual learners' writing motivation evolves over time, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. To address this gap, this 3-year teacher-researcher study tracked 25 non-Chinese speaking (NCS) primary students' Chinese writing motivation from Grade 4 to Grade 6, guided by Self-Determination Theory. The study addressed two questions: (1) How do motivational orientations evolve across technology-enhanced and experiential writing tasks? (2) What classroom conditions support or undermi

Electrophysiological correlates of in vivo and virtual reality exposure therapy in spider phobia.

Specific phobia can be treated successfully with exposure therapy. Although exposure therapy has strong effects on self-reported ratings and behavioral avoidance, effects on measures derived from electroencephalography (EEG) are scant and unclear. To fill this gap, spider-phobic individuals received either in-vivo or virtual reality exposure treatment. Patients were tested twice (one week before and after treatment), and control subjects once. In each session, EEG was recorded to spider pictures as well as other positive, negative, and neutral pictures. During EEG recording, participants perfo

Temporal division of the decision-making process: An EEG study.

Decision-making is a process that allows individuals to choose an option or alternative in order to maximize a subjective gain or achieve a set goal by evaluating and establishing a preference based on contextual and internal information. Ernst and Paulus proposed a three-stage temporal division of this process: 1) the assessment and formation of preferences among possible options; 2) the selection and execution of an action; and 3) the experience or evaluation of an outcome. Each stage involves the participation of several brain regions, including the prefrontal, parietal, and temporal cortic
