Optical coherence tomography differs in neuromyelitis optica compared with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is associated with destructive inflammatory lesions, resulting in necrosis and axonal injury. Disability from multiple sclerosis (MS) is due to a combination of demyelination and varying axonal involvement. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), by measuring retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) as a surrogate of axonal injury, has potential to discriminate between these two conditions. METHODS: Included were 22 subjects with NMO or NMO spectrum disorders and 47 with MS. Seventeen subjects with NMO and all with MS had a remote history of optic neuritis (ON) in a

Optical coherence tomography: a window into the mechanisms of multiple sclerosis.

The pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by demyelination, which culminates in a reduction in axonal transmission. Axonal and neuronal degeneration seem to be concomitant features of MS and are probably the pathological processes responsible for permanent disability in this disease. The retina is unique within the CNS in that it contains axons and glia but no myelin, and it is, therefore, an ideal structure within which to visualize the processes of neurodegeneration, neuroprotection, and potentially even neurorestoration. In particular, the retina enables us to investig

Method analysis for optimal continuous imaging using intravascular optical coherence tomography.

OBJECTIVES: Optical coherence tomography(OCT)is a high-resolution imaging method that can clearly visualize vessels through the displacement of blood with flushing agents. Continuous imaging methods have not been established. This study investigated optimal methods for continuous OCT imaging. METHODS: Thirty-four arteries with stent implantation (24 peripheral and 10 coronary arteries)in 14 pigs were examined using OCT with a motorized pullback device. Two imaging methods (flush alone by liquid substance and flush with occlusion) were compared. Adequate image acquisition was defined as the en

Spectrum of foveal development in albinism detected with optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has shown the absence of a foveal depression in an individual with oculocutaneous albinism, type 1 (OCA1) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/400. However, the presence of an annular light reflex in the macula has been noted with indirect ophthalmoscopy in other patients with albinism who have better vision. We studied macular architecture in albinism with OCT when binocular BCVA was > or = 20/60 and compared this to detection of foveal development with binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. METHODS: Eleven patients with albinism and BCVA >

Optical coherence tomography in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders.

Optical contrast is often the limiting factor in the imaging of live biological tissue. Studies were conducted in postmortem human brain to identify clinical applications where the structures of interest possess high intrinsic optical contrast and where the real-time, high-resolution imaging capabilities of optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be critical. Myelinated fiber tracts and blood vessels are two structures with high optical contrast. The ability to image these two structures in real time may improve the efficacy and safety of a neurosurgical procedure to treat Parkinson's disease c

Improved quantification of small objects in near-infrared diffuse optical tomography.

Diffuse optical tomography allows quantification of hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, and water in tissue, and the fidelity in this quantification is dependent on the accuracy of optical properties determined during image reconstruction. In this study, a three-step algorithm is proposed and validated that uses the standard Newton minimization with Levenberg-Marquardt regularization as the first step. The second step is a modification to the existing algorithm using a two-parameter regularization to allow lower damping in a region of interest as compared to background. This second stage allows the

The Optic Disc Drusen Studies Consortium Recommendations for Diagnosis of Optic Disc Drusen Using Optical Coherence Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Making an accurate diagnosis of optic disc drusen (ODD) is important as part of the work-up for possible life-threatening optic disc edema. It also is important to follow the slowly progressive visual field defects many patients with ODD experience. The introduction of enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) has improved the visualization of more deeply buried ODD. There is, however, no consensus regarding the diagnosis of ODD using OCT. The purpose of this study was to develop a consensus recommendation for diagnosing ODD using OCT. METHODS: The members of t

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in a Patient with Optic Atrophy After Non-arteritic Anterior Ischaemic Optic Neuropathy.

A 75-year-old female noticed a lower visual field (VF) defect in the right eye. A diagnosis of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) was made. The lower VF defect in the right eye did not change after onset. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiograms on the disc and the macula showed decreased retinal perfusion in the upper retina of the right eye. Retinal nerve fibre layer loss and ganglion cell complex loss in the upper retina were also seen in the right eye. OCT angiography could non-invasively detect the decrease of the retinal perfusion due to NAION.

[Comparative analysis of morphometric optic nerve head parameters in patients with open-angle glaucoma according to optical coherence tomography and retinal tomography].

To date objective methods of optic nerve head (ONH) parameters examination such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Heidelberg retinal tomography (HRT) are of great importance. The goal of the study was to compare ONH parameters in patients with different stages of glaucoma. Analysis of obtained data showed inconsiderable difference in absolute parametric indices, this is explained by different principles of ONH borders detection (OCT - the margin of pigment epithelium layer, HRT - scleral rim) as well as subjectivity in contour detection. OCT and HRT data allow to assess glaucomatous op
