The biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) approach for preventing gingival recessions in fixed prosthodontics. A 5- to 13-year follow-up retrospective study.

AIM: The present study was a retrospective medium- to long-term follow-up assessment of the clinical outcomes of patients rehabilitated with fixed prostheses according to the biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) principles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical records of patients rehabilitated between January 2007 and December 2014 were retrospectively assessed. Patients whose records met the inclusion criteria were also recalled for a hygiene visit. Data analyzed included the patients' periodontal condition, the presence of gingival recessions as well as any technical or biologic pr

[Different multidisciplinary approaches of two traumatic teeth fractures in the esthetic zone: a case report].

In this article, different methods to deal with teeth fractures were discussed by presenting a case of traumatic crown-root fracture in the anterior esthetic zone. The traumatic crown-root fracture is a common problem in clinic. When a fracture line locates in close proximity to or below the alveolar bone crest, the fracture most likely involve the junctional epithelium and the connective tissue attachment. This type of fracture becomes a challenge for restorative dentists because it involves biologic, functional, and esthetic considerations, especially when the fracture occurs in an esthetic

Correlation between clinical scoring of secondary caries at crown margins and histologically assessed extent of the lesions.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to propose a new clinical diagnostic rating index for secondary caries lesions at crown margins and to correlate this index with histologic evaluations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on criteria for the evaluation of root caries, a modification of secondary caries lesions at the crown margin (SC index) was applied; the lesion characteristics were described as SCO to SC4. A total of 16 crowned teeth exhibiting secondary caries were randomly selected. The teeth were rated and grouped according to their clinical SC grades (SC1 to SC4). After embedding in Technov

Dentigerous cysts in primary dentition: report of 2 cases.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts associated with the crowns of permanent teeth. They are usually single in occurrence and located in the mandible. The purpose of this case report was to describe the management of 2 dentigerous cysts in children. The treatments instituted were the extraction of the deciduous tooth involved followed by marsupialization in the first case and enucleation in the second one. Both treatments allowed rapid healing of the lesion and eruption of the permanent teeth without the need for orthodontic treatment.

Pedicle flaps, gingival grafts, and connective tissue grafts in aesthetic treatment of gingival recession.

Gingival recession leading to exposure of crown margins or extensive areas of the tooth root can cause significant aesthetic difficulties. Surgical innovations over the last decade have enabled the periodontist to correct such problems with greater predictability and improved aesthetics. The current surgical procedures for treatment of gingival recession are described and illustrated, and criteria for selection of the appropriate procedure are presented. The learning objective of this article is a review of the surgical procedures and an increased predictability in implementation.

The effect of changes in lower incisor inclination on gingival recession.

AIM: Orthodontic treatment may promote development of recessions. The mechanism by which orthodontic treatment influences occurrence of recessions remains unclear. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a change of mandibular incisor inclination promotes development of labial gingival recessions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample comprised dental casts and lateral cephalograms obtained from 109 subjects before orthodontic treatment (Tb) and after orthodontic treatment (Ta). Depending on the change of lower incisor inclination during treatment, the subjects were divided in

Clinical practice: dental trauma.

Approximately 50% of children under the age of 15 are victims of various kinds of injuries in the orofacial region. Post-traumatic complications may occur, including crown discolouration, cervical root fracture, ankylosis, root resorption and tooth loss. The most severe complication after dental injury in primary dentition can affect the developing permanent tooth germ, and various consequences may be seen several years later when the permanent tooth erupts. In the permanent dentition, the most severe dental injury affects the surrounding alveolar bone structure and will lead to loss of the to

A novel technique for socket-shield preparation used in conjunction with immediate implant placement. A case report.

The socket-shield technique is considered one of the best treatment modalities that reduce the amount of facial bone loss and gingival recession following tooth extraction. However, the difficulty in preparing the shield by partial tooth extraction makes it technique-sensitive and limits its use. This case report presents a 29-year-old medically fit male patient with a destructed non-vital lateral incisor. It was planned for immediate implant placement in conjunction with the socket-shield technique. The shield was prepared in a new technique using a nickel-titanium endodontic file, which was

Pre-emptive Intracoronal Radiolucency in First Permanent Molar.

Pre-eruptive intracoronal radiolucency (PECR) is characterized by the existence of a radiographic radiolucent area inside the coronal dentin prior to dental eruption. It is a rare clinical entity of unknown etiology, usually asymptomatic and diagnosed through routine radiographs. The aim of this article is to report the treatment of a PECR in an 8-year-old girl. Surgical procedure to expose the crown was conducted; upon tooth eruption, the radiolucent lesion was accessed and the tooth was restored. The case has an 18-month follow-up and emphasis on aspects linked to diagnosis and clinical appr

Dens evagination and complete invagination in the same tooth with extraoral fistula: A rare case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Successful management of a rare case involving both dens evaginatus and dens invaginatus in the same tooth, monitored over a 24-month follow-up. ABSTRACT: Dens invaginatus (DI) is a congenital dental anomaly characterized by the presence of a tooth that resembles a "tooth within a tooth." Conversely, dens evaginatus (DE) is a developmental anomaly distinguished by an additional tubercle or cusp on the tooth's crown. Both DI and DE can result in pulpal and periapical diseases in the affected tooth. This article presents a case of a healthy 14-year-old male with recurrent

Human life history evolution explains dissociation between the timing of tooth eruption and peak rates of root growth.

We explored the relationship between growth in tooth root length and the modern human extended period of childhood. Tooth roots provide support to counter chewing forces and so it is advantageous to grow roots quickly to allow teeth to erupt into function as early as possible. Growth in tooth root length occurs with a characteristic spurt or peak in rate sometime between tooth crown completion and root apex closure. Here we show that in Pan troglodytes the peak in root growth rate coincides with the period of time teeth are erupting into function. However, the timing of peak root velocity in m…

Mechanical Performance of 3D-Printed Resin Materials for Endocrown Restorations: A Comparative Evaluation of Fracture Resistance, Weibull Analysis, and Experimental Fracture Toughness.

Background and Objectives: Three-dimensional printing is increasingly used to fabricate dental restorations; however, limited evidence is available on the mechanical performance and fracture behavior of printable resin materials used for endocrown restorations. Fracture load alone may not fully describe material performance, particularly when brittle or defect-sensitive failure occurs. This in vitro study aimed to compare the fracture resistance, Weibull parameters, experimental Mode I fracture toughness parameter, and failure patterns of three 3D-printed resin materials used for endocrown res

Immediate loading of an implant following implant site development using forced eruption: a case report.

In restoring periodontally involved hopeless teeth, implant treatment has been widely used with combinations of various grafting techniques or guided bone regeneration. Instead of traditional surgical procedures, forced tooth eruption may be used successfully for implant site development. In this case, the authors orthodontically erupted a hopeless central incisor with an angular bony defect. Subsequently, they placed an implant immediately after tooth extraction and immediately loaded it with a temporary resin restoration.

Treatment of Teeth with Insufficient Clinical Crowns. Long-Term Clinical Outcomes of a Minimally Invasive Crown Lengthening Approach: A Retrospective Analysis.

This retrospective study evaluated the incidence of complications to determine the long-term survival rate of teeth with severely compromised clinical crowns treated with minimally invasive crown lengthening (MICL) and restorative treatment. A sample of 112 teeth in 86 patients was treated with MICL and restorative dentistry. Endodontic and orthodontic therapies were applied when needed. Clinical outcomes were assessed at baseline, 1 year, and in the long term. The application of MICL resulted in very limited radiographic bone resection (RBR; 1 ± 0.1 mm on average). Limited local inflammation
