A 76-year-old man presented with a tracheal tumor associated with severe respiratory obstruction. A tracheotomy was performed due to respiratory failure. F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) -positron emission tomography/computed tomography revealed an abnormal accumulation of FDG (maximum standardized uptake value: 16) in the trachea. Surgical correction of grade III glotto-subglottic stenosis in a two-month-old girl was illustrated in a staged manner. Firstly, a silicone keel was placed via anterior thyrotomy following a tracheotomy. Secondly, laryngotracheal reconstruction was performed by interposing an autogenous thyroid cartilage anteriorly between the edges of the longitudinally divided cricoid cartilage and the upper tracheal rings. Subglottic angiomas, frequently observed in new-borns, can have an unfavourable course due to laryngeal dyspnea. Although the natural course is towards spontaneous involution, different therapeutic approaches depend upon the lesion's sensitivity to corticotherapy. Twelve cases of childhood subglottic stenosis diagnosed either acquired or congenital were treated using an endolaryngotracheal Montgomery T-tube. Stenting lasted on average 5.6 months. Tracheotomy closure was possible in 75% of cases on average 15.3 months after diagnosis. Study of the follow-up of 43 laryngectomees during a 20 months term done at the Hospital de San Vicente de Paul, Medellín, Colombia. Twenty patients received prophylactically 1 gr of sodium cefoperazone each 12 hours for 3 doses; the other 23 were treated with penicillin/gentamycin after surgery, for 10 days. Hereditary angioedema is a rare familial disease caused by the defect of complement C1esterase inhibitor (C1-INH). It is characterized by recurrent acute edema of the extremities, the face, the respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract. Acute laryngeal edema usually produces laryngeal obstruction. Vocal cord paralysis is a common cause of neonatal stridor. Familial vocal cord dysfunction, however, is unusual. All three siblings in one family had neonatal stridor. Vocal cord dysfunction was confirmed after endoscopic examination in two of the children; a temporary tracheotomy was required by one child. Results of evaluation, including pulmonary function tests, suggest discrete dysfunction localized to the neuromuscular pathway responsible for vocal cord abduction.
