Assessing mobile technology use and mHealth acceptance among HIV-positive men who have sex with men and transgender women in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) can be beneficial in monitoring the complex healthcare regimen for people with HIV that includes adhering to medication and refraining from risky practices such as unsafe sex and injection drug use. Not only is mHealth often implemented without appropriate feasibility and acceptability research, but there is limited mHealth research among key HIV-positive populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). METHODS: This study assessed access to and use of mobile technology and acceptability of mHealth among 150 HIV-positive MSM

Experiences of Transgender Women Who Used a Dual HIV/Syphilis Rapid Self-test to Screen Themselves and Potential Sexual Partners (the SMARTtest Study).

HIV/syphilis self- and partner-testing may be especially appropriate for transgender women, since they shoulder a disproportionate burden of HIV, other STIs (e.g., syphilis), and report high levels of medical mistrust. The SMARTest study enrolled N = 50 sexual and gender minority individuals. The present analysis aims to understand the experiences (via in-depth interviews) of a subset of n = 11 transgender women who used INSTI Multiplex®, a combination HIV/syphilis rapid self-test, on themselves and potential sex partners. Participants reported that many partners were willing to test, and repo

The Social Construction of Transgender Individuals and U.S. Military Policy.

This article aims to apply the social construction of target populations to policy regarding transgender individuals in the U.S. military. After presenting an overview on diversity in the military, parallels were drawn between policy changes regarding the inclusion of openly transgender individuals in the military to those leading up to the inclusion of sexual minorities in the military. This article then details the controversy regarding the inclusion of transgender service members and compares the rationale given for their exclusion from the U.S. military to existing empirical research. [Transgender and non-binary teenagers : management in primary care].

Transgender, non-binary and questioning teenagers are increasingly visible. However, they face barriers in accessing appropriate care that meet their needs, both specific and regarding their general health. Primary care physicians increasingly see them in consultations but often lack elements of communication and recent knowledge that is needed to accompany them and their close ones in their -individual trajectories. This article aims to answer this need and provides a synthesis about recent evidence and suggested communication approaches for primary care physicians, who play a central role fo

[Feminizing Genital Gender-affirmative Surgery in Centralized and Decentralized Health Care Settings - The Hamburg TransCare study].

BACKGROUND: Gender Dysphoria (GD, formerly known as transsexualism) describes distress and impairment in an individual caused by the incongruence between the experienced gender and the sex assigned at birth (Gender Incongruence: GI). Transgender health care focusses on gender-affirmative treatments (e. g., hormone therapy) and associated needs (e. g., psychotherapy). Moreover, genital surgery is considered an effective treatment to reduce GI/GD and improve mental health and quality of life. Interdisciplinary cooperation between the associated medical facilities is regarded as evidence-based he

Recent HIV Infection among men who have sex with men and transgender women in Tijuana.

OBJECTIVE To characterize recent HIV infections among newly diagnosed men who have sex with men and transgender women in Tijuana. METHODS Limiting Antigen (LAg)-Avidity testing was performed to detect recent HIV infection within a cohort of newly-diagnosed men who have sex with men and transgender women in Tijuana. Logistic regression was used to determine characteristics associated with recent infection. A partial transmission network was inferred using HIV-1 pol sequences. Tamura-Nei 93 genetic distances were measured between all pairs of sequences, and the network was constructed by inferri

Ovarian Histopathology in Transmasculine Persons on Testosterone: A Multicenter Case Series.

BACKGROUND: As transmasculine persons utilize androgen gender affirming hormone therapy as a part of transition, guidance has been lacking on the effects of the therapy on the ovaries, especially for those who may desire retention. AIM: To describe the ovarian histopathology of transmasculine persons on testosterone therapy following oophorectomy at the time of hysterectomy performed for gender affirmation. METHODS: This was a multicenter case series study of transmasculine patients on testosterone therapy who underwent hysterectomy with oophorectomy for gender affirmation between January 20

Disaffirming Gender: Somatic Incongruence as a Co-function of Ideological Congruity.

The activist conjunction of sexual orientation and gender identity is questioned by demonstrating how the concerns of the transgender movement run contrary to an agenda of liberation from gender ideology. The confused vocabulary of trans discourse articulated in the language of somatic incongruence (so-called gender dysphoria) is exposed, using an analysis of the concept of somatic incongruence and the various interventions through which bodies are apparently restored to ideological congruence constructed upon, inter alia, gender, race, and age. The paper rejects transgender medical treatment

Writing Gender with Sexuality: Reflections on the Diaries of Lou Sullivan.

In contemporary psychoanalytic writing, gender tends to be disarticulated from sexuality. While this has been a theoretically useful approach, especially as regards the critical appraisal of early traditional literature (which often assumed a facile coherence between sex, sexuality, and gender), this position too often leaves gender stripped of one of the most compelling forces in psychoanalytic theorizing, namely, its relation to the sexual. Here the diaries of Lou Sullivan (1951-1991)-a transsexual man who began writing long before considering sexual transitioning-are used to present an exte

Cancer Risk in Transgender People.

Gender-affirming hormonal treatment (HT) in transgender people is considered safe in general, but the question regarding (long-term) risk on sex hormone-related cancer remains. Because the risk on certain types of cancer differs between men and women, and some of these differences are attributed to exposure to sex hormones, the cancer risk may be altered in transgender people receiving HT. Although reliable epidemiologic data are sparse, the available data will be discussed in this article. Furthermore, recommendations for cancer screening and prevention will be discussed as well as whether to

Gender essentialism in transgender and cisgender children.

Children, across cultures, show an early-emerging tendency to essentialize gender, viewing gender as inborn and predictive of stereotypical preferences. However, research has been limited to children whose own gender experience is largely consistent with the assumptions of gender essentialism. In contrast, transgender children have gender identities (and related stereotypical preferences) that differ from their sex assigned at birth, which therefore appear to challenge an essentialist view of gender. In the current study, we examined the degree to which transgender children (N = 97, 3-11 years

Hormone replacement therapy: informed consent without assessment?

Florence Ashley has argued that requiring patients with gender dysphoria to undergo an assessment and referral from a mental health professional before undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is unethical and may represent an unconscious hostility towards transgender people. We respond, first, by showing that Ashley has conflated the self-reporting of symptoms with self-diagnosis, and that this is not consistent with the standard model of informed consent to medical treatment. Second, we note that the model of informed consent involved in cosmetic surgery resembles the model Ashley defend

The impact on relationships following disclosure of transgenderism: a wife's tale.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: The experiences of transgender people are becoming increasingly more visible in popular culture, biographical literature and the media. The topic has received little attention within the psychiatric and mental health nursing literature. There is a paucity of literature exploring the impact on relationships following a disclosure of transgenderism. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: A narrative account of the consequences for the wife of one transwoman and their relationships with friends and family following the disclosure of transgenderism. Granulomatous Mastitis in a Transgender Patient.

Granulomatous mastitis is a rare and benign inflammatory condition of the breast most commonly affecting women of child-bearing age as well as patients on oral contraceptives. This condition is important to identify due to its diagnostic mimicry of malicious entities such as breast carcinoma. Clinical and radiological findings are nonspecific and may overlap with breast carcinomas, thus pathologic confirmation is often necessary for definitive diagnosis. Although cases of granulomatous mastitis have been described in cisgender females, there have been no reported cases in the transgender patie

Sexual orientation of trans adults is not linked to outcome of transition-related health care, but worth asking.

Since the beginning of contemporary transition-related care at the outset of the 20th century, sexual orientation has ben considered to be closely connected with gender identity and the developmental trajectories of trans people. Specifically, health professionals have regarded the anticipated post-transitional heterosexual behaviour of trans adults as predictive of a good outcome of cross-sex hormones and gender-confirming surgeries. This article reviews the current literature according to the question of whether the sexual orientation of trans people is linked to outcome measures following t

Neuroimaging studies in people with gender incongruence.

The current review gives an overview of brain studies in transgender people. First, we describe studies into the aetiology of feelings of gender incongruence, primarily addressing the sexual differentiation hypothesis: does the brain of transgender individuals resemble that of their natal sex, or that of their experienced gender? Findings from neuroimaging studies focusing on brain structure suggest that the brain phenotypes of trans women (MtF) and trans men (FtM) differ in various ways from control men and women with feminine, masculine, demasculinized and defeminized features. The brain phe
