Protective immunity and vaccination against cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Although a great deal of knowledge has been gained from studies on the immunobiology of leishmaniasis, there is still no universally acceptable, safe, and effective vaccine against the disease. This strongly suggests that we still do not completely understand the factors that control and/or regulate the development and sustenance of anti-Leishmania immunity, particularly those associated with secondary (memory) immunity. Such an understanding is critically important for designing safe, effective, and universally acceptable vaccine against the disease. Here we review the literature on the corre

A new intestinal fluke, Plagiorchis harinasutai n.sp.

Dilution-sedimentation examination of stool specimens from four opisthorchiasis patients treated with praziquantel led to the discovery of six Plagiorchis worms. This is the first known report of plagiorchis infection in man in Thailand. The morphological features differed from those of previously described Plagiorchis species indicating that these worms belong to a new species, which we designated as Plagiorchis harinasutai n.sp. in honour of Professor Chamlong Harinasuta, former Dean of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok. The holotype is held at the Museum and Refe

Long-Term Bonding Performance of New Universal Adhesives and Resin Cements.

Adhesive dentistry is an essential part of daily clinical practice, and the evolution of adhesive systems and resin cements has been driven by a quest for simplicity, efficiency, and long-term clinical reliability.1 Universal adhesives and resin cements now dominate the market. They are designed to work with multiple etching techniques and bond effectively to various dental materials and tooth substrates, optimizing adhesive protocols.2,3 However, it is important to define what makes a system "universal" and critically evaluate whether these newer systems deliver durable long-term bond strengt

The impact of a faculty training program on inclusive education and disability.

This paper describes the knowledge gained by 20 faculty members following their participation in a training program on inclusive education and disability. The study, which was conducted at an university in Spain, aimed to design, implement and evaluate a program for training faculty members to respond in an inclusive manner to the needs of students with disabilities. An initial, formative and summative qualitative evaluation was carried out and four instruments were used for collecting the data: group and individual interviews, written open-ended questionnaires and observations. The data were

Information and uncertainty in remote perception research.

This article has four purposes: 1) to present for the first time in archival form all results of some 25 years of remote perception research at this laboratory; 2) to describe all of the analytical scoring methods developed over the course of this program to quantify the amount of anomalous information acquired in the experiments; 3) to display a remarkable anti-correlation between the objective specificity of those methods and the anomalous yield of the experiments; and 4) to discuss the phenomenological and pragmatic implications of this complementarity. The formal database comprises 653 exp

Meningococcal meningitis prevention programs for college students: a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The incidence of meningococcal meningitis in college students is higher than in other populations. College students, especially 1st-year students living in dormitories or residence halls, are among those at highest risk of developing the disease. It is estimated that immunization can prevent up to 83% of cases among adolescents and college students. A review of the literature was undertaken to identify and critique the research-based prevention programs that are focused on college students. METHOD: An extensive search of the Cochrane Database of systematic reviews, Med

Modeling repeated ordinal responses using a family of power transformations: application to neonatal hypothermia data.

BACKGROUND: For analyzing a repeated ordinal response, it is common to use a multivariate cumulative logit model. This model may fit poorly, especially when a nonsymmetric response is available. In these cases, alternative strategies should be utilized. METHODS: In this paper, we present a family of power transformations for the cumulative probabilities to model asymmetric departures from the random-intercept cumulative logit model. To illustrate this method, we analyze the data from an epidemiologic study to identify risk factors of hypothermia among newly born infants in some referral unive

(Un)aware of change? Objective and subjective reactivity to the sensor-based measurement of physical activity and sedentary behaviour.

OBJECTIVES: Despite being the gold standard for assessing physical activity (PA) under free-living conditions, accelerometer-based assessments are prone to measurement reactivity, that is, changes in people's cognitions, emotions or behaviour due to being measured. Little is known about whether participants are aware of these changes. This preregistered secondary analysis assesses objective and subjective reactivity to the sensor-based measurement of PA (steps, light PA [LPA], moderate-to-vigorous PA [MVPA]) and sedentary behaviour (SB) in adults with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivit

Artificial Intelligence in Photodynamic Therapy: From Molecular Design of Photosensitizers to Intelligent Delivery, Adaptive Dosimetry, and Personalized Prognostication of Results.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive therapeutic approach based on the light-induced activation of a photosensitizer in the presence of molecular oxygen, resulting in the generation of reactive oxygen species, including singlet oxygen. Despite local selectivity and low systemic toxicity, reproducibility of PDT is restricted by non-uniform accumulation of the photosensitizer, aggregation and insufficient solubility of compounds, variability in the optical properties of tissues, hypoxia, oxygen consumption, photobleaching, and the lack of a universal measure of photodynamic dose. A

Influence of Retainer Design on Shear Bond Strength in Fixed Partial Dentures: An In Vitro Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) are considered conservative alternatives to conventional fixed partial dentures for replacing missing teeth. However, concerns regarding retention and debonding remain, particularly in posterior regions. This study evaluated the influence of different retainer designs on the shear bond strength (SBS) of fixed partial dentures. METHODS: Fifteen monolithic zirconia fixed partial dentures were divided into three groups: conventional overlay-retained FPD (OVL), modified overlay-retained FPD (MOVL), and conventional full-coverage crown-reta

Memetic/Metaphorical Digital Twins: Extending Knowledge Co-Creation Across Economics, Architecture, and Beyond.

This article introduces Memetic/Metaphorical Digital Twins (MDTs) as a novel extension of Digital Twin typologies by twinning conceptual schemes, complementing Industrial, Human, and Cognitive Digital Twins. MDTs embed cultural, organizational, and semiotic knowledge into digital frameworks, enabling the recombination and evolution of knowledge structures across disciplines. Drawing on Schlaile's economic perspectives and Mavromatidis's architectural lens of entropy and constructal thermodynamics, this study demonstrates how MDTs can address systemic challenges in communication, knowledge tran

Successful Single-Session Neural Self-Regulation Through Neurofeedback Varies Between Features.

Neurofeedback (NFB) and Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) research seldom present within-session individual learning dynamics. This is even though a large proportion of NFB and BCI users cannot learn the neural self-regulation required to control the feedback. Understanding the time course and learning dynamics between subjects will enable us to design more effective NFB and BCI protocols that promote the learning of neural self-regulation. In this study, we aimed to analyze individual learning trajectories of self-regulation of four different cortical rhythms, in terms of both frequency and spat

mRNA-LNP vaccines: rational design, delivery optimization, and clinical translation.

Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines face core challenges including low-delivery efficiency and immunogenicity, limiting their wide-ranging applications in infectious disease prevention and cancer therapy. Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), the most clinically validated non-viral delivery platform, address these challenges by encapsulating and protecting mRNA, promoting cellular uptake, and mediating endosomal escape. mRNA-LNP vaccines leverage a "rapid design + flexible production" advantage, decisively demonstrated by the success of COVID-19 vaccines such as BNT162b2. This review systematically analyzes m

Connecting communities across the globe: Atlas protocol.

BACKGROUND: Providing universal access to palliative care is increasingly recognised as a global public health priority, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Compassionate communities could help with provision by fostering community-led responses to dying, death and grief. Despite their global growth, compassionate communities are often absent from national and international palliative care strategies, and few are represented in academic literature. This, along with their diversity and community-defined nature, can contribute to difficulties in documentation, evaluation and visibili
