Visual dynamics: a WEB application for molecular dynamics simulation using GROMACS.

BACKGROUND: The molecular dynamics is an approach to obtain kinetic and thermodynamic characteristics of biomolecular structures. The molecular dynamics simulation softwares are very useful, however, most of them are used in command line form and continue with the same common implementation difficulties that plague researchers who are not computer specialists. RESULTS: Here, we have developed the VisualDynamics-a WEB tool developed to automate biological simulations performed in Gromacs using a graphical interface to make molecular dynamics simulation user-friendly task. In this new applicati

Myoelectric control of a computer animated hand: a new concept based on the combined use of a tree-structured artificial neural network and a data glove.

This paper proposes a new learning set-up in the field of control systems for multifunctional hand prostheses. Two male subjects with a traumatic one-hand amputation performed simultaneous symmetric movements with the healthy and the phantom hand. A data glove on the healthy hand was used as a reference to train the system to perform natural movements. Instead of a physical prosthesis with limited degrees of freedom, a virtual (computer-animated) hand was used as the target tool. Both subjects successfully performed seven different motoric actions with the fingers and wrist. To reduce the trai

Analyzing locomotion synthesis with feature-based motion graphs.

We propose feature-based motion graphs for realistic locomotion synthesis among obstacles. Among several advantages, feature-based motion graphs achieve improved results in search queries, eliminate the need of postprocessing for foot skating removal, and reduce the computational requirements in comparison to traditional motion graphs. Our contributions are threefold. First, we show that choosing transitions based on relevant features significantly reduces graph construction time and leads to improved search performances. Second, we employ a fast channel search method that confines the motion

Evaluation of a fluoroscopy-based navigation system enabling a virtual radiation-free preview of X-ray images for placement of cannulated hip screws. A cadaver study.

Accurate placement of cannulated screws is essential to ensure fixation of medial femoral neck fractures. The conventional technique may require multiple guide wire passes, and relies heavily on fluoroscopy. A computer-assisted planning and navigation system based on 2D fluoroscopy for guide wire placement in the femoral neck has been developed to improve screw placement. The planning process was supported by a tool that enables a virtual radiation-free preview of X-ray images. This is called "zero-dose C-arm navigation". For the evaluation of the system, six formalin-fixed cadaveric full-body

Estimation of accuracy of patient-specific musculoskeletal modelling: case study on a post polio residual paralysis subject.

For patients with patterns ranging out of anthropometric standard values, patient-specific musculoskeletal modelling becomes crucial for clinical diagnosis and follow-up. However, patient-specific modelling using imaging techniques and motion capture systems is mainly subject to experimental errors. The aim of this study was to quantify these experimental errors when performing a patient-specific musculoskeletal model. CT scan data were used to personalise the geometrical model and its inertial properties for a post polio residual paralysis subject. After having performed a gait-based experime

Preliminary research on the efficacy of virtual reality exposure therapy to treat driving phobia.

This article presents a review of preliminary research of two studies of the efficacy of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) to treat driving phobia. Study 1 describes a case study of a patient who completed a 7-day baseline followed by three sessions of VRET. Her peak anxiety decreased within and across sessions. At the post-treatment assessment, her phobic-related symptoms had diminished and she no longer met diagnostic criteria for driving phobia. Clinical improvement was maintained at 1-, 3-, and 7-month follow-up. In study 2, a multiple baseline across-subjects design was used to trea

metaConvert: an automatic suite for estimation of 11 different effect size measures and flexible conversion across them.

A fundamental pillar of science is the estimation of the effect size of associations. However, this task is sometimes difficult and error-prone. To facilitate this process, the R package metaConvert automatically calculates and flexibly converts multiple effect size measures. It applies more than 120 formulas to convert any relevant input data into Cohen's d, Hedges' g, mean difference, odds ratio, risk ratio, incidence rate ratio, correlation coefficient, Fisher's r-to-z transformed correlation coefficient, variability ratio, coefficient of variation ratio, or number needed to treat. Design of an interactive brain model for neuroanatomy education and MRI training.

In this article, we introduce a new virtual application that offers an interactive model of the brain for neuroanatomy education. Through a dual-platform architecture, the application can be downloaded on both desktop and mobile devices, with the mobile app leveraging unique capacities of modern handheld systems to deploy the brain model in augmented reality. In addition to illustrating complex spatial relationships between internal brain structures, vasculature, and cranial nerves, the application integrates magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data into the user interface. MRI series in the coro

DZC DIAG: mobile application based on expert system to aid in the diagnosis of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.

Dengue, Zika, and chikungunya are epidemic diseases transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. These virus infections can be so severe to the point of bringing on mobility and neurological problems, or even death. Expert systems (ES) can be used as tools for the identification of patterns intended to solve problems in the same way as a professional specialist would. This work aimed to develop an ES in the form of an Android application to serve as a supportive tool in the diagnosis of these arboviruses. The goal is to associate the set of symptoms from a patient to a score related to the likelihood of

Face and Content Validity of a Probe Tube Placement Training Simulator.

BACKGROUND: Probe tube placement is an important skill audiologists must learn to make real-ear measurements in an audiology clinic. With current evidence-based guidelines recommending insertion of the probe tube within 5 mm of the tympanic membrane (TM) for proper acoustical measurements, students must be well trained to ensure they are capable to perform this placement in clinical practice. This is not always the case as it has been found that real-ear measurements are not performed in a clinic as often as required. To address this, a simulator consisting of a 3D-printed ear model and an opt

Virtual reality assisted microscopy data visualization and colocalization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Confocal microscopes deliver detailed three-dimensional data and are instrumental in biological analysis and research. Usually, this three-dimensional data is rendered as a projection onto a two-dimensional display. We describe a system for rendering such data using a modern virtual reality (VR) headset. Sample manipulation is possible by fully-immersive hand-tracking and also by means of a conventional gamepad. We apply this system to the specific task of colocalization analysis, an important analysis tool in biological microscopy. We evaluate our system by means of a set of user

Confronting Auditory Hallucinations Using Virtual Reality: The Avatar Therapy.

The AVATAR therapy is a computer-based intervention which aims to reduce the frequency and severity of voices. The approach is based on computer technology which enables each patient to create an avatar of the entity (human or non-human) that they believe is talking to them. The therapist promotes a dialogue between the patient and the avatar in which the avatar progressively comes under the patient's control. Using real-time voice conversion delivery software, the therapist can modify the relationship between the patient and his/her voice. The innovation of this new intervention is discussed
