The term necrotizing angiitis signifies a histological lesion combining an inflammatory infiltration rich in pycnotic polynuclear cells to fibrinoid deposits of the vessels wall and/or of the near by collagen. This type of lesions may affect vessels of small caliber or vessels with a muscular wall (arterioles). In the skin, with the term necrotizing angiitis, is implied a lesion affecting the small vessels of the dermis, capillaries and mostly post-capillary venules. The most frequent, by far, clinical manifestation is a palpable purpura; more seldom, it may be lesions of urticaria, livedo or …

The lymph nodes (LN) of the congenitally athymic nude rat(rnu) were compared with the LN of non-nude littermates. The mesenteric and coeliac LN were smaller in the rnu rats, but the axillary and the cervical LN were larger. Germinal centres were found in the LN of nude rats. They were scarce and often very small, but some were of normal structure, especially in the cervical LN. The endothelium of post-capillary venules in the LN or normal rats, was seen. The paracortex was extremely depleted of lymphocytes but remained a distinct area occupied predominantly by pale interdigitating cells. In so…

Six cases of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy (AIBL) are presented, detailed ultrastructural and immunohistologic studies of several involved organs are described, and the literature is reviewed. The features of the lesion are of normal immune reactive cells containing polyclonal cytoplasmic immunoglobulin. Large numbers of dying and degenerating cells result in accumulations of cell debris, corresponding to the characteristic interstitial material seen by light microscopy. Our studies confirm that the vascular changes are unique to lymph nodes, appear confined to postcapillary venules, and …

PURPOSE: To evaluate retinal and choroidal vascular alterations in multiple sclerosis (MS) using multimodal imaging and determine their asso … e of EDSS progression.
RESULTS: Compared with controls, MSnON eyes showed narrower central retinal venules (P = 0.014), increased arteriole-to-venule ratio (AVR) (P = 0.031), and reduced venular fractal dimension (FD) (P = 0.013). Disability correlated with increased venular caliber (P < 0.001), vessel density (P = 0.026), superficial vascular complex (S …

PURPOSE: To identify the factors associated with retinal vessel diameters in the population of the Thessaloniki Eye Study.
METHODS: Cross-sectional population-based study (age ≥ 60 years). Subjects with glaucoma, late age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy were excluded from the analyses. Retinal vessel diameters were measured using the IVAN software, and measurements were summarized to central retinal artery equivalent (CRAE), central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE), and arteriole to venule ratio (AVR).
RESULTS: The analysis included 1614 subjects. The hypertensive group

PURPOSE: Structural and physiological abnormalities have been reported in the retina in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Retinal oximetry has recently detected changes in retinal oxygen metabolism in Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment. Our goal was to determine whether oxygen saturation in retinal blood vessels of patients with patients is different from that of a healthy population.
METHODS: Oxygen saturation of haemoglobin was measured in retinal blood vessels, using imaging with spectrophotometric noninvasive retinal oximeter. Eight MS patients with history of optic ne

Lucio's phenomenon (LPh) is a vasculitis clinically described in 1852 and microscopically documented in 1948 in patients with diffuse lepromatous leprosy; however, at present, there is no a clear concept about the pathogenesis of the necrosis, or about the type, size, and site of the damaged vessel. The objective of this study was to elucidate the type, size, site, and form of vessel damage in LPh in a retrospective, clinical, and histopathological study. Clinical information was obtained from the charts and records and/or from the histopathology request. Slides stained with hematoxylin and eo

During pregnancy the cardiovascular system undergoes several changes so as to adapt the maternal organism to the strains of pregnancy. These adaptations can assume a pathological development in persons with a previous history of cardiovascular problems. On the other hand the absence of these adaptations may lead to a pathological course of pregnancy. Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) may be such a pathological development due to maladaptation. The causes are for the most part unknown. For some time it has been assumed that it is due to microcirculatory disorders. Using periungual capillary

In hereditary hypertension and chronic diabetes, the number of arterial capillary ends decreased at the arterial side and increased at the venous one in rats. The density of endotheliocyte nuclei decreased in the arteries and increased in the capillaries and veins in the mesentery of the HAHIS rats. The thickening of the venous vessels' walls was more obvious in the SHR rats. The findings suggest different velocities of the proliferative processes in the two types of vessels.

The local injection of pure inflammatory mediators induces venular leakage. To test the effect of endogenous mediators from dying tissue on vascular leakage, the authors devised an experimental model simulating an infarct, whereby living vessels would be exposed to fragments of organs undergoing aseptic necrosis. Tissues from donor rats were implanted aseptically in the cremasteric sac. Control rats were implanted with materials deemed to be as close as possible to nonirritating: boiled tissues and spheres of Teflon or glass. At different points the rats were injected intravenously with carbon

The monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) is essential for the detection and treatment of most craniocerebral diseases. Invasive methods are the most accurate approach to measure ICP; however, these methods are prone to complications and have a limited range of applications. Therefore, non-invasive ICP measurement is preferable in a range of scenarios. The current non-invasive ICP measurement methods comprise fluid dynamics, and ophthalmic, otic, electrophysiological, and other methods. This article reviews eight methods of non-invasive estimation of ICP from ocular measurements, namely op

Changes in blood vessels and lymphatics in health and disease are easier to understand and interpret when studied microscopically in three d … architectures that repeat in arcades between the tracheal cartilages. Even small abnormalities in either blood vessels or lymphatics can be noticed and evaluated in three dimensions. We and oth …

The most common modality of transmission of the Echinococcus granulosus is through the alimentary tract. Other ways of infestation are questionable. Airborne penetration of bronchial venules to reach the heart and the systemic circulation has been advocated, but never demonstrated. Direct subcutaneous contamination through an injured skin has also been considered. Moreover, the hypothesis that a contamination different from eggs ingestion is not possible, is justified by the reason that eggs transform into larvae in the gastro-intestinal environment. Therefore, it is accepted the possibility t…

Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) is a rare vascular inflammatory condition that affects post-capillary venules. Its incidence in the pediatric population is unknown. However, its incidence has been shown to increase with age. The causes of LCV can be varied, ranging from drugs to infections to systemic disease. LCV as a presenting symptom of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is rare, especially in the pediatric population. A 15-year-old female with a family history of systemic lupus erythematosus was transferred to our hospital with a month-long history of rash, joint swelling and tenderness, …

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's granulomatosis) is one of the idiopathicimmune-mediated small-vessel vasculitides described in humans which are characterised by the presence of circulating antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies. It most commonly involves capillaries, venules and arterioles of the ear, nose and throat, lungs and glomeruli. A case of destructive haemopurulent rhinitis associated with relapsing periods of pyrexia, lethargy and stiffness as well as generalised pulmonary infiltrates in a young Anatolian shepherd dog is presented that closely resembles granulomatosis with…
