Comparison of human subjective and oculomotor responses to sinusoidal vertical linear acceleration.

Human subjects were vertically oscillated in the dark over a frequency range of 1-0.02 HZ at peak-to-peak acceleration amplitudes of 0.2-0.6 g, using both a vertical movement simulator and real flight. Subjective tracking of the movement was unreliable and showed no systematic dependence of phase upon frequency. In contrast, reflex oculomotor response, although weak, clearly demonstrated progressive and substantial phase lag with increasing frequency. The similarity of this characteristic to that previously obtained from brainstem neural responses in cat suggests the oculomotor response was pr

Plasticity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex.

The plasticity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was investigated by examining three different processes, namely vestibular habituation to repeated head angular velocity steps, vestibular compensation after hemilabyrinthectomy, and vestibular compensation in patients suffering from unilateral Ménière's disease. The first two processes were examined in the cat, while the third process was studied in man. A quantification of these processes was obtained by computing some parameters characterizing the diagrams of the slow cumulative eye position (SCEP) and the slow phase eye velocity (SPEV) or

Middle fossa vestibular nerve section. A histopathological report.

A patient with Meniere's disease underwent a middle fossa superior and inferior vestibular nerve section with excision of Scarpa's ganglia. Studies of this patient's temporal bone, conducted two and one-half years post-operatively, showed normal cochlear and facial nerves. The internal auditory canal showed fibrosis and new periosteal bone formation. There was complete denervation of the vestibular labyrinth except for the posterior semicircular canal crista. Fibrous and osteoid tissue filled the superior and lateral semicircular canals. In this case, these severe degenerative changes, presuma

Bilateral lesions of the medial longitudinal fasciculus in monkeys: effects on the horizontal and vertical components of voluntary and vestibular induced eye movements.

Bilateral transections across the brainstem interrupted the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) in three monkeys trained to make eye movements while subjected to horizontal or vertical angular accelerations. Eye movements measured before and after the lesion revealed deficits in both voluntary and vestibular compensatory eye movements; the deficits differed in the horizontal and vertical directions. Vertical saccades in both directions were normal but eccentric positions of fixation could not be maintained; a drift toward the midline followed by a corrective saccade produced vertical fixation

[Spontaneous and experimental vestibular activity following total removal of neurinomas of the auditory nerve].

Spontaneous and experimental vestibular activity in 84 patients after total resection of neurinomas of the acoustic nerve is analysed. In the immediate postoperative period the frequency of marked manifestations of spontaneous vestibular activity reduced sharply, but spontaneous nystagmus persisted in 97.5% of patients. In some patients spontaneous nystagmus to the side from which the tumor had been removed become more conspicuous. In the remote postoperative period spontaneous nystagmus was unilateral in 45.5% of patients, bilateral in 40.3%, and not recorded at all in 14.2% of patients. In t

[Vestibular dizziness. Differential diagnosis and therapy].

Dizziness includes a wide variety of subjective sensations which are not conclusive as to their localization or pathogenesis. Even in the absence of other symptoms an analysis of dizziness, including consideration not only of its occurrence but also of its quality and course, can suggest several possibilities for differential diagnosis. We differentiate between positional vertigo, permanent vertigo and attacks of dizziness, which may be of long or only short (seconds to few minutes) duration. Based on this classification the differential diagnosis of vestibularly-induced dizziness, which range
