Stereotypy in young children with autism and typically developing children.

Although stereotypy is one of the key diagnostic features of autism, few studies have compared stereotypic behavior in children with autism and typically developing children. The present study employed direct observational measurement methods to assess levels of stereotypic behavior in 2-, 3- and 4-year-old children with autism or pervasive developmental disorder - not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and age-matched typically developing peers. Thirty children with autism or PDD-NOS and 30 typically developing children participated. Each child's performance of several early learning and play skil

Effects of sensory integration intervention on self-stimulating and self-injurious behaviors.

This study compared the effects of occupational therapy, using a sensory integration (SI) approach and a control intervention of tabletop activities, on the frequency of self-stimulating behaviors in seven children 8-19 years of age with pervasive developmental delay and mental retardation. Daily 15-min videotape segments of the subjects were recorded before, immediately after, and 1 hour after either SI or control interventions performed during alternating weeks for 4 weeks. Each 15-min video segment was evaluated by investigators to determine the frequency of self-stimulating behaviors. The

Offspring of women with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated health and development, temperament, body satisfaction, nutritional status, and mealtime interaction patterns in offspring (ages 1-4) of women with current or past anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa in comparison to control children. METHOD: Information was gathered via maternal report and interview, health and development records, a 3 day food diary, and a videotaped lunchtime interaction. RESULTS: Children of women with eating disorders had significantly lower birth weights and lengths than control children. There were no differences observed in childhood temperament o

Intermittent diplopia and strabismus caused by ocular neuromyotonia.

PURPOSE: Two cases illustrate the symptoms, signs, etiologies, and treatment of ocular neuromyotonia (ONM). METHODS: The histories, neuroradiologic tests, and/or biopsy revealed the etiologies of ONM in both patients. Clinical observations, videotaping, and electronic eye movement recordings documented the eye movements. RESULTS: A 72-year-old man with chronic arachnoiditis following myelography with thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) developed intermittent diplopia and a partial right third nerve palsy. Left gaze induced spasm of the right medial rectus. Right gaze produced right lateral rectus s

An exploratory study of righting reactions from a supine to a standing position in adults with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Standing from a supine position is important for physical independence. The purpose of this study was to determine the developmental level of movement in this righting task of adults with Down syndrome. SUBJECTS: Fifteen subjects (mean age = 37.6 years, SD = 18, range = 22-65) with a diagnosis of Down syndrome and mild to moderate mental retardation participated in this study. METHODS: Subjects were videotaped rising from a supine to a standing position during 10 repeated trials. The video record was analyzed to categorize the standing movements according to VanSant's

Radiologic evaluation of the liver and gastrointestinal tract in rats infected with Taenia taeniaeformis.

In rats infected with the cestode Taenia taeniaeformis, hepatomegaly results from development of parasitic cysts in the liver. Diffuse nodular mucosal hyperplasia in the glandular region (corpus and antrum) of the stomach, and gross thickening of the intestinal mucosa also result. Between postinfection days (PID) 21 and 84, radiologic observations were made after oral administration of a barium sulfate suspension in T taeniaeformis-infected rats and in age/sex-matched controls. There was radiographic evidence of hepatic enlargement at PID 21. Enlargement of the gastric folds was first observed

Typical vs. atypical: Combining auditory Gestalt perception and acoustic analysis of early vocalisations in Rett syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Early speech-language development of individuals with Rett syndrome (RTT) has been repeatedly characterised by a co-occurrence of apparently typical and atypical vocalisations. AIMS: To describe specific features of this intermittent character of typical versus atypical early RTT-associated vocalisations by combining auditory Gestalt perception and acoustic vocalisation analysis. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We extracted N = 363 (pre-)linguistic vocalisations from home video recordings of an infant later diagnosed with RTT. In a listening experiment, all vocalisations were assessed fo

Gross anatomy videos: student satisfaction, usage, and effect on student performance in a condensed curriculum.

Anatomy educators are being tasked with delivering the same quantity and quality of material in the face of fewer classroom and laboratory hours. As a result they have turned to computer-aided instruction (CAI) to supplement and augment curriculum delivery. Research on the satisfaction and use of anatomy videos, a form of CAI, on examination performance continues to grow. The purpose of this study was to describe the usage and effect on examination scores of a series of locally produced anatomy videos after an 11% curriculum reduction. First-year medical students (n = 40) were given access to

Representation of action in occipito-temporal cortex.

A fundamental question for social cognitive neuroscience is how and where in the brain the identities and actions of others are represented. Here we present a replication and extension of a study by Kable and Chatterjee [Kable, J. W., & Chatterjee, A. Specificity of action representations in the lateral occipito-temporal cortex. Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 18, 1498-1517, 2006] examining the role of occipito-temporal cortex in these processes. We presented full-cue movies of actors performing whole-body actions and used fMRI to test for action- and identity-specific adaptation effects. W

Motor stereotypies in children with autism and other developmental disorders.

The purpose of the study was to count and characterize the range of stereotypies--repetitive rhythmical, apparently purposeless movements--in developmentally impaired children with and without autism, and to determine whether some types are more prevalent and diagnostically useful in children with autism. We described each motor stereotypy recorded during 15 minutes of archived videos of standardized play sessions in 277 children (209 males, 68 females; mean age 4y 6mo [SD 1y 5mo], range 2y 11mo-8y 1mo), 129 with autistic disorder (DSM-III-R), and 148 cognitively-matched non-autistic developme

Blood harmane is correlated with cerebellar metabolism in essential tremor: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: On proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging ((1)H MRSI), there is a decrease in cerebellar N-acetylaspartate/total creatine (NAA/tCr) in essential tremor (ET), signifying cerebellar neuronal dysfunction or degeneration. Harmane, which is present in the human diet, is a potent tremor-producing neurotoxin. Blood harmane concentrations seem to be elevated in ET. OBJECTIVES: To assess in patients with ET whether blood harmane concentration is correlated with cerebellar NAA/tCR, a neuroimaging measure of neuronal dysfunction or degeneration. METHODS: Twelve patients with ET und

A randomized controlled trial of an educational intervention to prevent the chronic pain of whiplash associated disorders following rear-end motor vehicle collisions.

STUDY DESIGN: Concealed allocation, multicenter, single-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of an educational video in the tertiary prevention of persistent WAD symptoms following rear-end motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) are an important and costly health problem. There is a lack of high quality evidence surrounding efficacy of treatments for WAD. Existing research supports active interventions and early return to regular activities. METHODS: Consecutive patients presenting to four te

Impact of videotaped information on frequency and confidence of breast self-examination.

BACKGROUND: Videotaped education materials to teach breast self-examination (BSE) are used worldwide. However, evaluation of videotaped BSE instructions is lacking. METHODS: Premenopausal women (mean age 33.4+/-11.2 years) without history of breast cancer were approached to participate in this experimental study and randomly assigned to a video intervention group (VG; n = 130: length of the video = 15 min) or non-video comparison group (NVG; n = 121). All participants answered a questionnaire on BSE behavior and health beliefs. No additional training was given. The total duration of the sessi

Filter frequency selection for manual wheelchair biomechanics.

Wheelchair locomotion is an important form of mobility for many individuals with spinal cord injury. However, manual wheelchair propulsion can lead to upper-limb pain and can be very inefficient. This has led investigators to apply biomechanics to the study of wheelchair use. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the frequency content of the motion of both hands during two speeds of wheelchair propulsion, (2) to obtain the filter frequencies necessary to remove noise from wheelchair motion data, and (3) to provide signal-to-noise ratio data for wheelchair kinematics. The participa

Family history information on essential tremor: potential biases related to the source of the cases.

The proportion of essential tremor (ET) cases that can be attributed to genetic factors is unknown; estimates range from 17--100%. One possible reason for this variability is that clinic and community cases may differ with regard to family history of ET. This is because clinic patients are self-selected and represent as few as 0.5% of all ET cases. Our goal was to determine whether ET cases ascertained from a clinic differed from those ascertained from a community in terms of the family history information that they provided. Subjects (57 clinic, 64 community) underwent a family history interv

Intractable epilepsy following radiosurgery for arteriovenous malformation.

Radiosurgery is often used to treat arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) located in deep brain locations. Most of these procedures are successful not only in obliterating the AVM but also in decreasing the frequency and severity of associated seizures. Although radiosurgery is occasionally associated with the development of easy-to-control seizures immediately postoperatively, there have been no reports of intractable epilepsy developing after radiosurgery. In this report, however, a case is presented in which a patient underwent gamma knife surgery (GKS) for an AVM, after which intractable epil

Parents' interpretations of children's respiratory symptoms on video.

AIMS: To investigate how parents report children's respiratory sounds on video compared to a clinical "gold standard". METHODS: Five clinicians agreed on 10 video clips of children with audible breathing. These responses were the "gold standard". The clips were shown to parents of children: (a) with asthma/wheeze; (b) with other respiratory complaints; (c) without respiratory complaints. Parents were asked what they called the sounds, where they originated, and whether their own child made similar sounds. RESULTS: A total of 190 parents took part. The "correct" labelling of wheeze was 59% (9
