BACKGROUND: Do visceral-spermatic vein shunts have any clinical impact on sclerotherapy of varicoceles?
METHODS: The spermatic venograms of 500 consecutive patients were retrospectively reviewed to classify visceral-spermatic communications. Men with an average age of 27.8 years (range 11-65 years old) underwent sclerotherapy of a varicocele. Of the 500 men, 445 were referred for oligoasthenospermia (89%), 45 for pain (9%), and 10 for prevention of infertility (2%). An autopsy case of malignant eccrine poroma (MEP) with multiple visceral metastases is reported. We studied 76 consecutive patients with localized scleroderma (morphea with or without linear scleroderma) and analyzed the frequency, prognosis, and predictors of internal involvement in a subset of 53 patients systematically investigated for the presence of such involvement. Complications that arose after 861 percutaneous liver biopsies performed from 1997 to 2001 were reviewed. They were analysed in relation to the underlying liver disease. Minor complications as the severe pain requiring intravenous analgetics administration occurred in 60 cases (6.9%) within two hours after the biopsy. Total central lymphatic irradiation (2500-3000 rads in 3 to 6 weeks) including the entire abdomen, the supradiaphragmatic nodal areas, and Waldeyer's ring is being investigated as a potentially curative approach to patients with Stage III disease.
