An extensive number of complications after insertion of a subclavian catheter is described in the literature. In this case report a patient with a pseudo-aneurysm of the internal mammary artery after insertion of a subclavian catheter is described. If one finds a shadow on the X-ray of the chest after insertion of a subclavian catheter, the possibility of a pseudo-aneurysm should be considered first.

Achondroplasia is a unique model of the effects of skeletal dysplasia and dwarfism on the respiratory system. We measured chest dimensions, spirometry, lung volumes, maximal expiratory flow volume curves, nasal and airways resistance, closing volume, maximal inspiratory/expiratory pressures, and tracheal area by acoustic reflection in 12 healthy subjects with achondroplasia. Professional exposure to vegetable dusts affect the respiratory function of the exposed subjects. A previous survey conducted in an industrial flour-mill demonstrated a higher frequency of respiratory symptoms in workers compared to a control group. Ten subjects employed in a work site particularly exposed to dust were studied. We prospectively performed methacholine bronchoprovocation challenges on 46 young smokers to examine the effects of cigarette smoking on airway responsiveness. A study of 67 subjects in a small titanium oxide paint factory in Nigeria showed 50-54% frequency for airway symptoms, 20-40% for neurological symptoms, and 10-27% for other symptoms. The efficacy, usefulness and side effects of RO 15-1788 (RO), a specific benzodiazepine (BZD) antagonist, have been evaluated. Sixty-two patients (ASA I-III, mean age 72 +/- 9 yr) scheduled for urological surgery under regional anaesthesia and BZD sedation received placebo or RO in a randomized, double-blind fashion at the end of the procedure, following sedation with midazolam. When compared with placebo, RO improved alertness and collaboration for 15 min, and suppressed anterograde amnesia for 60 min. The chest radiographs of 78 adult asthmatic patients admitted with severe acute asthma over a three-years period were reviewed. Radiographic findings were compared with functional data. Overinflation was demonstrated in 32% of chest X-rays. In four patients the presence of atelectasis was shown. On admission only PaO2 was significantly lower in patients with radiological abnormalities than in patients with normal chest radiographs. The usefulness of chest radiographs in patients with acute asthma is discussed.

The multiple regression equation predicting lung function values for a study population of South African Blacks is compared with equations predicting normal values for Blacks elsewhere, and in almost all cases is found to predict higher values. This is so despite the study population's high prevalence of respiratory disease and long history of exposure to crocidolite asbestos dust. This anomalous finding is explored in terms of some problems with studies generating normal values. In particular, the confounding effect of social class status on ethnic determinants of lung function is considered.
