[Biermer's disease and autoimmune hemolytic anemia].

Biermer's disease is an autoimmune atrophic gastritis of the fundus predominantly responsible for a malabsorption of vitamin B12. Despite its association with several autoimmune disorders, few observations have reported an association with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). We report a case of Biermer's disease associated with AIHA in a patient of 66 years old.

[Vitamin prophylaxis for immature infant anemia (author's transl)].

The cause of the Premature Infant Anemia (PIA) is mainly an insufficient erythropoiesis, a shorter mean-life of the red cells and in increased hemolysis. On these basis of prophylaxis has been attempted by treating newborns with folic acid, alpha-tocopherol and vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C. 208 premature babies have been treated (birth weight higher than 1750 nr. 171; birth weight less than 1750 nr. 37). Several parameters have been evaluated: weight gain, erythrocyte and reticulocyte count, jaundice occurrence and number of transfusions needed. The results on the blood parameters was good for th

Quantification of water-soluble vitamin profiles in human plasma via automated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Water-soluble vitamins including thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), biotin (vitamin B7), 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid (vitamin B9), and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) are essential micronutrients functionally important for human health. Reliable and accurate quantification of the water-soluble vitamin profiles is of vital importance for evaluating their deficiency and related diseases. However, simultaneous determination of these water-soluble vitamins in complex biological fluids such as plasma is a challenge

Vitamins and Chronic Wounds: How Altered Pharmacokinetics and Comorbidities Contribute to Vitamin Deficiencies.

Wound healing is complex and requires adequate amounts of macro- and micronutrients. When wound healing is delayed, a wound is considered chronic. Increasing evidence shows that vitamin deficiencies are prevalent in patients with chronic wounds, yet intervention studies with vitamin supplementation yielded inconsistent effects. These inconsistencies may be explained by suboptimal study designs and vitamin doses. To substantiate optimal dosing, it is important to understand how vitamin pharmacokinetics and requirements are altered in patients with chronic wounds. However, a comprehensive overvi

Vitamin D is a potential treatment for the management of gastrointestinal mucositis.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Gastrointestinal mucositis (GM) is a severe side effect of cancer treatments, negatively impacting the patient's quality of life, and has limited treatment. GM consists of complex biological processes involving apoptosis and inflammation, leading to damage and ulceration of the gastrointestinal system. Recently, vitamin D has been shown to have multiple roles in the gut, including immunomodulation, epithelial barrier regulation and microbiome regulation. Hence, this review aims to put forth vitamin D as a potential therapeutic due to its protective role in the intestine.

The Impact of Vitamin Deficiencies on Oral Manifestations in Children.

Vitamins play a vital role in human health, particularly in the development and maintenance of oral health in children. These nutrients are broadly categorized into fat-soluble and water-soluble types, crucial for children's well-being. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of vitamin deficiencies on the oral health of children, focusing on how these deficiencies contribute to various oral health issues and determining the relationship between specific vitamin shortages and oral diseases. Findings indicate that shortages in vitamins A and D lead to enamel issues and a higher

Environmental and Clinical Determinants of Vitamin D Status in Breast Cancer Patients: A Multivariable Analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D deficiency is commonly observed in patients with breast cancer and may affect disease course and treatment outcomes. The determinants of vitamin D status in this population remain incompletely understood, particularly with respect to lifestyle, psychosocial, and tumour-related factors. The aim of this study was to identify environmental and clinical factors associated with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations in women with breast cancer, with particular emphasis on dietary patterns, psychological distress, sleep quality, and tumour molecular subty

Vitamin nutrition in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD).

In 10 patients who had been on CAPD for 8.75 months, blood levels of the vitamins A, E, B-complex and C were measured and a precise diet history using food weighing for 3 days was obtained. Plasma vitamin A was elevated in all; since retinol binding protein (RPB) was elevated even more, the ratio of retinol to RBP was low. Vitamin E levels were also high. The vitamins B1, B2 and B6 were measured using erythrocyte enzyme activities. Vitamin B1 was low or borderline in 5, vitamin B6 was decreased in 3 and erythrocyte pyridoxal phosphate in 8 patients. Folic acid was low or borderline in 6 patien

Nutrition and neurodegeneration: epidemiological evidence and challenges for future research.

The prevention of dementias, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), is a growing public health concern, due to a lack of effective curative treatment options and a rising global prevalence. Various potential risk or preventive factors have been suggested by epidemiological research, including modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet. Current epidemiological data are in favour of a protective role of certain micronutrients (B vitamins related to homocysteine metabolism, the anti-oxidant vitamins C and E, flavonoids, polyunsatured omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D) and macronutrients (fish) in the prev

One-carbon metabolite ratios as functional B-vitamin markers and in relation to colorectal cancer risk.

One-carbon metabolism biomarkers are easily measured in plasma, but analyzing them one at a time in relation to disease does not take into account the interdependence of the many factors involved. The relative dynamics of major one-carbon metabolism branches can be assessed by relating the functional B-vitamin marker total homocysteine (tHcy) to transsulfuration (total cysteine) and methylation (creatinine) outputs. We validated the ratios of tHcy to total cysteine (Hcy:Cys), tHcy to creatinine (Hcy:Cre) and tHcy to cysteine to creatinine (Hcy:Cys:Cre) as functional markers of B-vitamin status

Bed bugs reproductive life cycle in the clothes of a patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease results in iron deficiency anemia.

We report the case of an 82-year-old patient, hospitalized for malaise. Her clothes were infested by numerous insects and the entomological analysis identified them as being Cimex lectularius (bed bugs). The history of the patient highlighted severe cognitive impairment. The biological assessment initially showed a profound microcytic, aregenerative, iron deficiency anemia. A vitamin B12 deficiency due to pernicious anemia (positive intrinsic factor antibodies) was also highlighted, but this was not enough to explain the anemia without macrocytosis. Laboratory tests, endoscopy and a CT scan el

Association between dietary macronutrient composition and plasma one-carbon metabolites and B-vitamin cofactors in patients with stable angina pectoris.

Elevated plasma concentrations of several one-carbon metabolites are associated with increased CVD risk. Both diet-induced regulation and dietary content of one-carbon metabolites can influence circulating concentrations of these markers. We cross-sectionally analysed 1928 patients with suspected stable angina pectoris (geometric mean age 61), representing elevated CVD risk, to assess associations between dietary macronutrient composition (FFQ) and plasma one-carbon metabolites and related B-vitamin status markers (GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS or microbiological assay). Diet-metabolite associations were

Serum B12 concentration is elevated in patients receiving chronic parenteral nutrition, but is not a marker of intestinal failure-associated liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Cobalamin is released during hepatic cytolysis associated with liver injury. Serum B12 concentration is frequently elevated in patients that receive long-term parenteral nutrition (PN). We hypothesized that serum B12 concentration would become elevated in intestinal failure-associated liver disease and would reflect in disease severity. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 13 patients with short bowel syndrome (<200 cm residual small intestine) that included complete terminal ileum resection (3 male and 10 female, aged 42 to 78 y) that had received parenteral nutrition (PN) 6.1+/
