Natural history of posterior vitreous detachment with early management as the premier line of defense against retinal detachment.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to elucidate various aspects of the natural history of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), in particular the relation between symptomatology and prognosis as it relates to management of patients with the earliest symptoms of PVD. METHODS: A prospective study of 350 consecutive patients with PVD was performed, excluding all patients referred from an ophthalmologist, those with symptoms of more than 3 months in duration, and those with a history of ocular trauma, except for cataract surgery. Aphakia was present in 21 eyes, and 50 patients were bilaterally invol

Early-Onset Ocular Presentation in Stickler Syndrome Type 1 Due to a COL2A1 Frameshift Variant.

BACKGROUND Stickler syndrome is a genetically heterogeneous connective tissue disorder caused by mutations in collagen genes (COL2A1, COL11A1, COL11A2, COL9A1, and COL9A2). It is characterized by a distinctive craniofacial appearance, high myopia, vitreoretinal degeneration, hearing loss, and early-onset arthritis. Type 1, the most common autosomal-dominant form, results from COL2A1 variants and is strongly associated with ocular complications, including high myopia, vitreous degeneration, and retinal detachment. Early recognition of systemic and ocular findings is essential for timely managem

Delayed rhegmatogenous retinal detachment following high-voltage electrical injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Electric cataract is a recognized complication of high-voltage electrical injury, resulting from direct electrical and thermal damage to ocular tissues. Although cataract formation is the most commonly reported manifestation, electrical injury should be regarded as a pan-ocular insult capable of affecting both anterior and posterior segment structures. Delayed posterior segment complications, particularly rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), remain poorly characterized and may be overlooked during early management. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a patient who develop

Hyaluronic acid-based in situ injectable crosslinked hydrogels as next-generation vitreous substitutes: A review.

Replacement of the vitreous body remains a major unmet need in vitreoretinal surgery. Currently used tamponade agents, such as gases and silicone oils, provide mechanical support but fail to replicate the optical, viscoelastic, and biological functions of the native vitreous and are associated with significant clinical limitations. Injectable hydrogels have therefore emerged as promising alternatives, particularly systems that undergo network formation directly within the vitreous cavity. This review provides a focused, concept-driven analysis of in situ forming hydrogel vitreous substitutes,

Transcorneal Vitrectomy In Eyes With Regressed Retinoblastoma.

PURPOSE: Current treatments for retinoblastoma facilitate globe salvage but can result in vitreoretinal disorders that may require surgery. There is controversy on surgical approaches in eyes with retinoblastoma. Here, we describe a transcorneal vitrectomy approach that avoids the use of chemotherapy or cryotherapy. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed on five consecutive patients with regressed retinoblastoma for >12 months (Group D/ct2b) at Children's Hospital Los Angeles who had vitrectomy between November 2022 and December 2023. RESULTS: Five patients underwent eight vitrect

Associations Between β-Peripapillary Atrophy and Reticular Pseudodrusen in Early Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

PURPOSE: Choroidal thinning has been associated with reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) and β-peripapillary atrophy (β-PPA), which have been linked to normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). This analysis sought to determine whether RPD are independently associated with β-PPA in early AMD patients. Secondary outcomes included the association of RPD and preexisting diagnosis of glaucoma, cup-to-disc ratio (CDR), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and IOP. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study examined 78 age- and sex-matched early AMD patients: 43 RPD patients (63 eyes) and 35 non-RPD patients (

Intraocular lens subluxation obstructing a glaucoma tube shunt after a Valsalva maneuver: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Late subluxation of an intraocular lens (IOL) within the capsular bag is a rare complication of cataract surgery, primarily associated with progressive zonular weakening in conditions such as pseudoexfoliation syndrome, high myopia, prior vitreoretinal surgery, connective tissue disorders, or ocular trauma. While IOL-capsular bag subluxation is well-documented, its impact on glaucoma drainage devices remains poorly understood. We present a rare case of Valsalva-induced IOL subluxation obstructing an Ahmed glaucoma valve, resulting in acute intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation in a
