Changes in Rat 50-kHz Ultrasonic Vocalizations During Dopamine Denervation and Aging: Relevance to Neurodegeneration.

Vocal communication is negatively affected by neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson disease, and by aging. The neurological and sensorimotor mechanisms underlying voice deficits in Parkinson disease and aging are not well-understood. Rat ultrasonic vocalizations provide a unique behavioral model for studying communication deficits and the mechanisms underlying these deficits in these conditions. The purpose of this review was to examine the existing literature for methods using rat ultrasonic vocalization with regard to the primary disease pathology of Parkinson disease, dopamine dener

Diversity in sound pressure levels and estimated active space of resident killer whale vocalizations.

Signal source intensity and detection range, which integrates source intensity with propagation loss, background noise and receiver hearing abilities, are important characteristics of communication signals. Apparent source levels were calculated for 819 pulsed calls and 24 whistles produced by free-ranging resident killer whales by triangulating the angles-of-arrival of sounds on two beamforming arrays towed in series. Levels in the 1-20 kHz band ranged from 131 to 168 dB re 1 microPa at 1 m, with differences in the means of different sound classes (whistles: 140.2+/-4.1 dB; variable calls: 14

Testosterone implants alter the frequency range of zebra finch songs.

To investigate whether changes in testosterone alter the frequency range in which a zebra finch produces song, we assigned male zebra finches to two groups, one of which received testosterone implants and the other empty silastic capsule implants. We then recorded songs up to 52 weeks after the surgery and measured frequency changes in the fundamental frequencies of arbitrarily chosen harmonic stacks in the songs of birds in either group. We found statistically significant decreases after 5 weeks in the songs of the testosterone-treated birds. No changes were found in the fundamental frequenci

Inflation of the esophagus and vocal tract filtering in ring doves.

Ring doves vocalize with their beaks and nostrils closed, exhaling into inflatable chambers in the head and neck region. The source sound produced at the syrinx contains a fundamental frequency with prominent second and third harmonic overtones, but these harmonics are filtered out of the emitted signal. We show by cineradiography that the upper esophagus, oral and nasal cavities collect the expired air during vocalization and that the inflated esophagus becomes part of the suprasyringeal vocal tract. The level of the second and third harmonics, relative to the fundamental frequency (f(0)), is

Distinct periods of cannabinoid sensitivity during zebra finch vocal development.

Zebra finch song is a form of vocal communication learned during at least two distinct stages of late postnatal development. During the first of these stages, termed auditory learning, nestlings memorize the song pattern of an adult male tutor, usually the father. During the second stage, sensory-motor learning, these song patterns are practiced and refined until a good copy is produced by adulthood. Vocal learning has made zebra finches a useful model for studying drug effects during vocal development. Prior work has shown that daily exposure to a modest dosage of the cannabinoid agonist WIN5

Intensity control during target approach in echolocating bats; stereotypical sensori-motor behaviour in Daubenton's bats, Myotis daubentonii.

When approaching a prey target, bats have been found to decrease the intensity of their emitted echolocation pulses, called intensity compensation. In this paper we examine whether intensity compensation in the echolocation of bats is flexible or stereotyped. We recorded the echolocation calls of Daubenton's bats (Myotis daubentonii) while the animals attacked targets of different dimensions. Myotis daubentonii reduced the peak sound pressure level emitted by about 4dB for each halving of distance, irrespective of the target presented (mealworms and two different sizes of spheres). The absolut

Temporal precision and temporal drift in brain and behavior of zebra finch song.

In the zebra finch forebrain nucleus robustus archistriatalis (RA), neurons burst during singing. We showed that the internal structure of spike bursts was regulated with a precision of circa 0.2 ms, and yielded alignment of acoustic features of song with a precision of circa 1 ms. In addition, interburst intervals and corresponding syllable durations displayed systematic variation within song (average elongation 0.3 ms/s song), and slower "drift" across songs. Systematic variation on even a coarser time scale might be difficult to detect in other systems, but could affect the analysis of temp

Modified synaptic dynamics predict neural activity patterns in an auditory field within the frontal cortex.

Frontal areas of the mammalian cortex are thought to be important for cognitive control and complex behaviour. These areas have been studied mostly in humans, non-human primates and rodents. In this article, we present a quantitative characterization of response properties of a frontal auditory area responsive to sound in the brain of Carollia perspicillata, the frontal auditory field (FAF). Bats are highly vocal animals, and they constitute an important experimental model for studying the auditory system. We combined electrophysiology experiments and computational simulations to compare the r

Immunohistochemical analysis of myosin heavy chain expression in laryngeal muscles of the rabbit, cat, and baboon.

We studied myosin heavy chain (MyHC) expression and fiber type distribution in laryngeal muscles in the rabbit, cat, and baboon using immunohistochemistry with highly MyHC-specific antibodies. Two types of variation in MyHC expression were found: between muscles of different function within species and within specific muscles between species. Within species, thyroarytenoid (Ta), an adductor, had faster MyHCs and fiber type profiles than the abductor, posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA), which expressed faster MyHCs than the vocal fold tensor, cricothyroid (CT). Between species, laryngeal muscles ge

Prenatal exposure to valproic acid reduces synaptic δ-catenin levels and disrupts ultrasonic vocalization in neonates.

UNLABELLED: Valproic acid (VPA) is an effective and commonly prescribed drug for epilepsy and bipolar disorder. However, children born from mothers treated with VPA during pregnancy exhibit an increased incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although VPA may impair brain development at the cellular level, the mechanism of VPA-induced ASD has not been completely addressed. A previous study has found that VPA treatment strongly reduces δ-catenin mRNA levels in cultured human neurons. δ-catenin is important for the control of glutamatergic synapses and is strongly associated with ASD. VPA i

The role of gastric and duodenal agents in laryngeal injury: an experimental canine model.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The specific agents responsible for producing laryngeal signs and symptoms are currently unknown. We systematically evaluated the damaging role of gastric (acid and pepsin) and duodenal (bile acids and trypsin) ingredients individually and in combination on different laryngeal structures in an experimental canine model. METHODS: A total of 42 beagles were studied (wt 9-15 kg each). After pentathol anesthesia all dogs underwent laryngoscopy. Injury (punch biopsy) was caused to the right vocal cord, medial arytenoid wall, and posterior cricoid wall on day 1. Pepsin (0.5 mg/

[Fundamental and clinical consideration of repeated intracordal injection therapy of atelocollagen--a histological study of canine vocal cords and a review of clinical data of 96 patients].

Hoarseness or aspiration due to recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis confront many patients with problems in their daily living. At our outpatient clinic, patients with unilateral laryngeal paralysis due to recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis are treated by injecting atelocollagen (3% non crosslinked atelocollagen, Koken Co., Ltd.) into the vocal cords under endoscopic control, using a soft fiberscope. A single injection may not be effective, but a relatively satisfactory therapeutic result can be obtained after several repeated injections. In the present study, the tissue levels of atelocollag

Cognitive control of orofacial motor and vocal responses in the ventrolateral and dorsomedial human frontal cortex.

In the primate brain, a set of areas in the ventrolateral frontal (VLF) cortex and the dorsomedial frontal (DMF) cortex appear to control vocalizations. The basic role of this network in the human brain and how it may have evolved to enable complex speech remain unknown. In the present functional neuroimaging study of the human brain, a multidomain protocol was utilized to investigate the roles of the various areas that comprise the VLF-DMF network in learning rule-based cognitive selections between different types of motor actions: manual, orofacial, nonspeech vocal, and speech vocal actions.

High-speed biomimetic underwater acoustic communication technology inspired by dolphin clicks.

Biomimetic underwater acoustic communication (BUAC) is a key technology for underwater data transmission, yet existing BUAC techniques are hindered by low data rates and inadequate degree of mimic (DoM). Inspired by the wideband click trains of dolphins, this paper proposes a high-speed BUAC scheme that employs dolphin clicks as information carriers. Information is embedded by jointly modulating the amplitude and phase of these clicks. The effects of Doppler shift and inter-symbol interference are effectively mitigated through the cascaded application of interleaving, Gray coding, resampling,

Mapping the spatial distribution of chorusing oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) with distributed acoustic sensing.

Passive acoustic surveys of soniferous marine communities can provide useful metrics for characterizing behavior, abundance, and ecological influences; however, they typically offer limited information about the spatial distribution of biological sources. Recent advances in distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) offer the potential to conduct wide-area surveys of bioacoustic activity that would be logistically infeasible with traditional hydrophone measurements. Here, a 2.2 km DAS cable deployed in Narragansett Bay, RI, was used to map the spatial distribution of oyster toadfish chorusing over a 2

Traffic Reduction during COVID-19 Lockdowns Benefited Species Already Tolerant of Noise Pollution: An Acoustic Analysis.

AbstractHigh levels of anthropogenic noise pollution affect wildlife globally. Traffic noise contributes a ubiquitous source of noise pollution and shows high intensity at lower sound frequencies. Animals using high-frequency sounds or broad frequency bandwidths may, to some extent, escape energetic masking by traffic noise. Although it is difficult to disentangle effects of noise pollution from those of urbanization, COVID-19 lockdowns reduced traffic in a quasi-experimental manner that isolates the effects of noise. Comparing counts of North American songbirds before and during COVID-19 lock

Neuronal processing of complex sounds in the prothoracic ganglion of a bushcricket.

Male bushcrickets produce complex species-specific songs to attract mating partners. Since the neuronal processing underlying song-pattern detection is not fully understood, we analysed extracellularly recorded song-induced spike responses and local field potentials across the first stage of auditory processing in the prothoracic ganglion of Mecopoda elongata. We analysed the influence of the temporal structure and of any change in amplitude of spiking and local field potentials. We presented the complete chirp and compared the neuronal response pattern with those responses evoked individually

Vocalization modulates the mouse auditory cortex even in the absence of hearing.

Vocal communication depends on distinguishing self-generated vocalizations from other sounds. Vocal motor corollary discharge (CD) signals are thought to support this ability by adaptively suppressing auditory cortical responses to auditory feedback. One challenge is that vocalizations, especially those produced during courtship and other social interactions, are accompanied by other movements and are emitted during a state of heightened arousal, factors that could potentially modulate auditory cortical activity. Here, we monitor auditory cortical activity, ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), and
