This paper reports an analysis of the measures taken at Preterm, Inc, of Washington, DC, to reduce the incidence of complications of first trimester outpatient abortions. Data are presented on the 291 complications (40.0/1000) resulting from 7272 procedures performed during 1976. Forty-one women were hospitalized (5.6/1000). Disturbed elderly patients too often receive a general and rather automatic diagnosis of senility when a differential diagnosis, made by a multidisciplinary team, could identify their problems more specifically. In 23 states and Washington D.C., alcohol retailers are required by law to post alcohol warning signs (AWS) that warn against the risks of drinking during pregnancy. Using the variation in the adoption of these laws across states and within states over time, I find a statistically significant reduction in prenatal alcohol use associated with AWS. I then use this plausibly exogenous change in drinking behavior to establish a causal link between prenatal alcohol exposure and birth outcomes. We describe a case of frostbite to all fingers of a mountain climber, treated with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO). All fingers eventually healed to full function, with only some cosmetic deformity to the tip of the most severely affected finger. Because few cases of frostbite treated with HBO have been reported, we hope that such case reports will stimulate future research in this area. We investigated the feasibility of using driver's license records to obtain height and weight data of individuals. First, we linked Washington State driver's license records (DOL) to the state birth files to assess how well driver's licenses can be linked to a public health database. Female residents of six counties in Washington and Utah in whom a diagnosis of ovarian cancer was made during 1975-79 were interviewed concerning prior use of oral contraceptives.
