In August 1994, cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in a diarrheic fawn from a captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) herd maintained for research purposes at The University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forest Resources in Athens, Georgia (USA). From June through August 1995, 11 captive female white-tailed deer were housed in individual barn stalls where they gave birth to 18 fawns. We studied the effects of GABA on anoxia-induced injury in CNS white matter using optic nerves exposed to 60 min of anoxia. Injury was assessed by recording pre- and postanoxic compound action potentials (CAPs). GABA (1 microM) significantly increased postanoxic CAP recovery when applied 60 min prior to anoxia. This effect was bicuculline (100 microM) insensitive, mimicked by baclofen (1 microM), blocked by GABA-B antagonists, and not mimicked by selective GABA-A agonists. BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation is an established complication of acute hemolytic transfusion reactions, particularly those involving the ABO red cell (RBC) antigen system. In addition, peripheral blood white cells, particularly monocytes, have demonstrated expression of procoagulant activity (PCA) in response to inflammatory stimuli. Extracellular beta-glucosidase was purified from a white-rot fungus, Trametes gibbosa by 50% ammonium sulphate saturation and Sephadex G-100 column chromatography. It showed maximum activity towards p-nitrophenyl- beta-D- glucopyranoside (pNpG). The pH optimum was 3.5. Temperature optimum was 40 degrees C but shifted to 50 degrees C on preincubation with pNpG. Hg2+, Fe3+ and Cu2+ strongly inhibited the activity. The enzyme was competitively inhibited by glucose with a Ki of 5.2 mM. The apparent molecular mass as determined by gel filtration chromatography was 640 kDa.

Oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD) syndrome is an uncommon inherited disorder with eye and facial abnormalities, syndactyly, and defects in tooth enamel. Some of the previously reported patients with ODDD syndrome also manifested spastic quadriparesis. We describe a patient with sporadic ODDD syndrome referred for evaluation of progressive spastic paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain demonstrated abnormal white matter, which suggests an explanation for the observed spastic paraparesis.

This study compares the attitudes and beliefs of white and black adolescents who drink heavily. The study's sample comprises 1,533 youth who responded in 1987 to a survey of 10,259 7th to 12th grade students, and reported that they had gotten drunk at least six times within the previous year. The ratio of blacks to whites decreased with drinking severity. Controlling for age, sex, and living situation, a logistic regression revealed that blacks were significantly more likely than whites to believe that getting drunk would lead to health problems and that alcohol is addicting. The usefulness of In-111 labeled white cells in acute infection is well documented but the role of Tc-99m labeled white cell scintigraphy (WCS) has not been as clearly established. Using stannous fluoride colloid and a simple labelling procedure with 20 ml of autologous whole blood, three cases are presented in which Tc-99m WCS established unexpected diagnoses in patients who had remained undiagnosed despite extensive investigation.

In a prospective study, eight patients with 15 hands affected by both vibration white finger and carpal tunnel syndrome were treated by surgical decompression of the carpal tunnel. On review six months later, the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome were improved in all cases and the symptoms of white finger were improved in half of the cases. Nerve conduction studies and palmar skin histology are discussed.

The Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPWS) is a pre-excitation syndrome manifested on the 12-lead ECG by a short PR interval (less than .12 sec), a prolonged QRS interval (greater than .10 sec), and an initial slurring of the QRS complex called a delta wave. This study documents glycosuria effects of xylazine and ketamine in eight captive and 19 free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from January to April 1985. Mean urinary glucose:creatinine ratios in two groups of deer fed high protein-high energy and low protein-low energy diets and in free-ranging deer were 1,000, 719, and 259, respectively. Glucose did not occur in urine of deer immobilized by physical restraint. Glucose:creatinine increased with the time interval between xylazine injection and urine collection in the two groups of captive deer.
