Post-stroke Chinese pure alexia: linguistic features and neuropsychological profiles.

PURPOSE: Very few cases of Chinese pure alexia have been reported to date. We aim to summarize the linguistic features and neuropsychological profiles of Chinese pure alexia through a case series study. METHODS: 11 consecutive patients with post-stroke Chinese pure alexia and 11 healthy controls were included. The Aphasia Battery of Chinese (ABC) and 68-Chinese character oral reading test (68-character test) were used to evaluate the reading and writing ability. Reading errors were classified based on the performance of 68-character test. Neuropsychological profiles were evaluated with corres…

Increased Prevalence of Large Language Model-Associated Language in US Residency Application Personal Statements.

BACKGROUND: Residency leaders increasingly rely on personal statements to assess applicant communication skills and individuality. Personal statements written by large language models (LLMs) have been rated more readable but more generic than applicant-written ones, yet the prevalence of LLM use and its effect on applicant writing remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: To measure the prevalence of LLM-associated language in personal statements from the 2017 through 2024 application cycles and assess associated changes in applicant writing. METHODS: This retrospective descriptive study analyzed personal …

A comparative study of frequency effect on acquisition of grammar and meaning of words between Chinese and foreign learners of English language.

Frequency effect on vocabulary acquisition has been widely investigated in second language acquisition (SLA) research, whereas comparative studies of vocabulary acquisition of learners from different language types, such as hieroglyphic writing and alphabetic writing, are still rarely found. This type of studies could be of great significance in exploring some unique characteristics of how second language learners of native languages of different writing perceive and acquire second language. Using artificial words of alphabetic writing and low-frequency English words as experimental materials,…

Saccadic eye movements of dyslexic adult subjects.

The characteristics of visually guided saccadic eye movements were compared in 12 normal adult subjects and 12 test subjects of normal intelligence, but with problems in reading and writing. All subjects were examined psychometrically for different cognitive abilities, and for their reading and writing capabilities. The anamnestic reports about their reading and writing problems earlier in their lives were analysed. Based on scores of the writing and reading tests, the test group was subdivided into two subgroups: A and B (group A reached medium, group B very low scores in both tests). Five di…

Dysgraphia and dysprosody in a patient with arteriovenous malformation: a case report.

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) results from development of abnormal connections between veins and arteries. This study reported anAVM case suffering from dysgraphia and dysprosody. According to the results after the trauma, the patient's handwriting was identified as macrographic and illegible, and written letters and verbs were neglected in free writing or dictation. Moreover, prosody of the patient's utterances was changed. Finally, an intervention was conducted to improve the writing impairments whereby they eventually enhanced. AVM can adversely affect communication opportunities and wor…

Citing Hippocrates on depression in epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: When writing about the bidirectional etiological relationship between depression and epilepsy, neuropsychiatrists often cite Lewis (1934) [Lewis AJ. Melancholia: a historical review. Journal of Mental Science 1934; 80: 1-42] who cited Hippocrates - namely, "melancholics ordinarily become epileptics, and epileptics, melancholics". In this paper, the complicated reference for this citation from Lewis (1934) was critically reappraised. METHODS: The Greek-Latin edition of Hippocratic writings by Ermerins to which Lewis (1934) referred and most volumes of the standard Greek-English edi…

Dysgraphia Following the Resection of a Left Parietal Glioma.

We report herein the case of a 41-year-old man operated on for a small inferior parietal lobule ganglioglioma with a sleep-awake-sleep protocol and language mapping to avoid major speech disorders. Postoperatively, however, writing disturbance was characterized by persistent graphemic errors that lasted for about 8 months. The topic is discussed in light of recent literature, exploring the possible relationship between writing difficulties and disconnections produced by a combination of resecting supramarginal gyrus components and interrupting arcuate fasciculus fibers. Awake mapping of eloque…

A Neuropsychological Profile of Developmental Dyscalculia: The Role of Comorbidity.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) has long been thought to be determined by multiple components. Dyscalculia has high comorbidity with other learning and developmental disabilities, including reading and writing disorders, attention deficits, and problems in visual/spatial skills, short memory, and working memory. This study aims to assess prevalence rates for isolated as well as comorbid DD in a sample of Italian-speaking children. In addition, we studied the neuropsychological profile of children with isolated or combined dyscalculia. We tested 380 children (176 males and 204 females) between t…

Dystonia-Ataxia with early handwriting deterioration in COQ8A mutation carriers: A case series and literature review.

Cerebellar ataxia is a hallmark of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) deficiency associated with COQ8A mutations. We present four patients, one with novel COQ8A pathogenic variants all with early, prominent handwriting impairment, dystonia and only mild ataxia. To better define the phenotypic spectrum and course of COQ8A disease, we review the clinical presentation and evolution in 47 reported cases. Individuals with COQ8A mutation display great clinical variability and unpredictable responses to CoQ10 supplementation. Onset is typically during infancy or childhood with ataxic features associated with devel…

Testing a procedural variant of written imaginal exposure for generalized anxiety disorder.

This experiment examined the degree to which it is more beneficial for individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) to engage in repeated exposure to mental imagery of the same feared scenario versus varying the exposure content. On three consecutive days, individuals with GAD (N=57) spent 20min writing about: (1) the same worst case scenario (consistent exposure; CE), (2) variations of their worst case scenario (varied exposure; VE), or (3) a neutral topic (neutral control; NC). Participants in the CE condition displayed significant decreases in worry, acute cognitive avoidance, and in…

[Abraham Vater and the Papilla of Vater - From publication to medical term].

The name Abraham Vater is internationally associated with the confluence of the common bile duct and the pancreatic duct. Vater's writings were published 300 years ago along with the most important anatomical publications of that time. In his experiments, he examined in particular the merging of both ducts and their physiological significance. The major duodenal papilla is neither part of the experiments in this publication, nor does Vater describe it in detail. Rather, Abraham Vater collects and discusses the knowledge of this anatomical region in his writing.

[Mixed aphasia with jargonographia in a right-handed patient].

We report a case of crossed aphasia with jargonagraphia in a forty-eight year old right handed monolingual man without family history of handedness or prior neurological illness. He developed a right temporo-insulo-parietal hamatomae documented by CT scan and accompanied by aphasia, left hemineglect, left hemiplegia, left lateral homonymous hemianopsia. The oral language was reduced and writing language was characterised by jargon. The writing and oral comprehension were preserved. This aphasia suggested a relationship between cerebral lateralization of language function and manual preference …

Handedness and creativity in a sample of homosexual men.

A form concerning handedness, dyslexia, stuttering (self-report), and twinning was included in a study of sexual habits of homosexual men. Questions about interests in music, art, and creative writing were also included. A questionnaire was sent out to male homosexuals. Out of 391 returned forms, 363 were suitable for data processing. Analysis showed 13.9% reported writing with the left hand, 6.5% with stuttering, and 8.6% with dyslexia. The twin incidence was 1.2%. The creativity questions indicated a high music and painting activity. The results confirmed previous studies, showing a left shi…

Supplementary motor area aphasia: a case report.

A 72-year-old right-handed woman developed aphasia after a left supplementary motor area (SMA) infarct. She had a right hemiparesis, more paretic on the leg, a tendency to look to her left, and loss of spontaneity. Neuropsychological deficits were mainly in the initiation of language production. She did not speak spontaneously, but responded and articulated well to questions. She named objects correctly when presented, and could repeat words, phrases, and sentences well. She had a difficulty in reading aloud, writing spontaneously and writing to dictation, but preserved the ability to copy wri…

[Pure alexia due to a fusiform gyrus lesion].

We present a patient with pure alexia following a hemorrhagic infarction in the left fusiform gyrus. The symptom began with alexia preferentially disturbed for kana, but during the course of recovery slight agraphia for kanji became pronounced. In the earlier phase, alexia was more severe than agraphia and he could write kanji that he could not read. Furthermore, kinesthetic reading was effective. These findings are consistent with the symptoms of pure alexia, although the fact that a writing disturbance for kanji persisted resembles the profile of alexia with agraphia for kanji due to a poste…

Right unilateral jargonagraphia as a symptom of callosal disconnection.

We report the case of a right-handed patient who exhibited right unilateral jargonagraphia after a traumatic callosal hemorrhage. The lesion … al lesions disturbed the interhemispheric transfer of information for the dual-route procedures for writing in the right hemisphere, allowing the kinesthetic images of characters stored in the left hemisphere to be processed freely, resulting in the right unilateral jargonagraphia. At least two factors seem to explain that kana was more defective than kan …

Phonological remediation effects on a child with giftedness and developmental dyslexia.

Twice-exceptionality is characterized as the presence of high performance concomitantly with deficiencies or incompatible conditions. An example is when giftedness manifest associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. This study is a clinical case report referring to the evaluative and interventional process of a 9- year-old child with the paradoxical combination of giftedness associated with dyslexia. It aims to compare the performance in phonological processing, reading and writing before and after phonological remediation. In the first assessment, the child demonstrated alphabetic level in…

How Specific Are Learning Disabilities?

Despite historical emphasis on "specific" learning disabilities (SLDs), academic skills are strongly correlated across the curriculum. Thus, one can ask how specific SLDs truly are. To answer this question, we used bifactor models to identify variance shared across academic domains (academic g), as well as variance unique to reading, mathematics, and writing. Participants were 686 children ages 8 to 16. Although the sample was overselected for learning disabilities, we intentionally included children across the full range of individual differences in this study in response to growing recogniti…
