Renal transplantation across a blood group barrier--'A2' kidneys to 'O' recipients.

The outcome of 11 renal transplants with kidneys from blood group A2 donors to blood group O recipients is reported. Eight grafts had a satisfactory function, three early losses were noted: one acute rejection after four weeks, two technical failures. The longest survival is four years, the patient died from septicaemia with a functioning graft. Obviously, the blood group A2-O incompatibility is not an obstacle to successful organ transplantation.

Association of ABO blood group and antituberculosis drug-induced liver injury: A case-control study from a Chinese Han population.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Antituberculosis drug-induced liver injury (ATLI) is a serious adverse drug reaction, and its pathogenic mechanism is still largely unknown. Rifampin (RIF) has been reported to cause haemolysis due to the production of drug-dependent antibodies, and haemolysis results in an increased level of free haem, which affects the function of hepatocytes. Blood group determinants can act as specific receptor sites for drug-antibody complexes, causing erythrocyte destruction in the presence of RIF. RIF-induced immune haemolysis may be a potential mechanism for ATLI. Thus, the

The role of ABO blood groups in Crohn's disease and in monitoring response to infliximab treatment.

BACKGROUND: The variation in ABO blood groups is reported to be associated with multiple diseases. Infliximab (IFX) has been widely used in the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD). We aim to investigate the distribution of ABO blood groups in Chinese patients with CD and to explore its impact on response to IFX. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with CD were consecutively recruited to the study between 2007 and 2014. CD patients receiving IFX therapy were followed for at least two years. RESULTS: In 293 patients with CD, most patients (40.6%) had blood type O (119/293). The odds ratio (OR) of CD

[Determination of antithrombocyte antibodies in the blood serum of patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura by an immunoenzyme method].

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for determination of serum antiplatelet antibodies. Platelets obtained from healthy donors of blood group 0(1) were washed off plasma and sedimented on the bottom of microtest wells. After washing off unattached platelets and blocking of plastic with albumin platelets were incubated with sera under investigation and binding of serum antibodies was detected using antihuman immunoglobulin antibodies conjugated with peroxidase. Ten patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). 1 patient with systemic lupus erythematosus. 1 patient

Transfusion of ABO-mismatched platelets leads to early platelet refractoriness.

Forty-three consecutive patients previously unexposed to platelets and undergoing treatment for acute leukaemia or autografting for relapsed Hodgkin's lymphoma were randomized to receive transfused platelets of either their own ABO group (OG) or of a major mismatched group (MMG). The 26 evaluable patients were equally distributed between the two study groups. Nine of 13 (69%) MMG patients became refractory with a median onset at transfusion 7 (15 d), compared with only one of 13 (8%) OG patients (P = 0.001). Refractoriness was associated with the formation of high titre isoagglutinins, anti-HL

[Pregnancy after ABO and Rh mismatched allotransplantation of peripheral blood progenitor cells, complicated by Rh disease].

We describe the case of a woman, who changed her blood group phenotype from Rh plus to Rh minus, as an effect of peripheral blood progenitor cells allotransplantation, and produced anti-Rh-D antibodies at an early stage of her first pregnancy. These antibodies were directed against blood red cells of the fetus, who inherited Rh-D antigen after his mother. During the pregnancy came to a light figure of a Rh disease. Because of the clinical appearance of this disease we assume, that the primary immunization had place before the pregnancy and was complication of the RhD mismatched transplantation

A Case of ABO-Incompatible Kidney Transplantation for a False-Positive T and B-Cell Crossmatch Test Due to Anti-A Antibodies.

The recipient was a 50-year-old man with blood type O who was referred to our department for a pre-emptive ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (KTx), with his wife as the donor whose blood was type A. However, both of the T and B cell complement-dependent crossmatch and flow cytometric crossmatch tests showed positive results. Even though donor-specific antibodies were negative by Luminex, we did not recommend transplantation and he had received dialysis therapy for 3 years. We conducted a re-evaluation of crossmatch tests. IgM and anti-B antibody were eliminated from the recipient's sera

Immune hemolysis following ABO-mismatched stem cell or solid organ transplantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Limitations in donor availability for stem cell or organ transplantation require that ABO-incompatible donors be used. Crossing ABO lines can have immune consequences characterized by immediate or delayed hemolysis. RECENT FINDINGS: The use of peripheral blood as a stem cell source has essentially eliminated the risk for ABO-mediated hemolysis during infusion. Delayed red cell engraftment is expected after a major ABO-incompatible transplant and may be associated with pure red cell aplasia. The incidence of hemolysis associated with minor ABO incompatibility, the passenger

Regulation of the oncodevelopmental expression of type 1 chain ABH and Lewis(b) blood group antigens in human colon by alpha-2-L-fucosylation.

Blood group antigen expression in the distal human colon is related to the development of the organ and is modified by malignant transformation. To elucidate the biochemical basis for these changes, we have (a) analysed the activity of glycosyltransferases coded for by the H, Se, Le, X, and A genes, in tissue biopsy specimens from normal and malignant proximal and distal human colon; (b) characterised the glycosphingolipids expressed in the various regions of normal and malignant colon by immunostaining of high performance thin layer chromatography plates; and (c) located the antigens on tissu

Beyond Hemolysis and Transfusion: The Untold Story of Blood Groups in Neonatal Disease.

Blood, as a genetically determined phenotypic characteristic of red blood cells (RBCs), has traditionally been associated with transfusion safety and prevention of hemolytic reactions. However, recent data suggest that the ABO system may influence the predisposition to and the course of various pathological conditions, with potential implications for the development of comorbidities and clinical management of patients. Blood group antigens are expressed on RBCs, platelets, epithelial cells, and endothelial cells, and are involved in fundamental biological functions, such as cell recognition, i

Parathyroid water clear cell hyperplasia, an O-allele associated condition.

This is an investigation into the finding that patients with primary hyperparathyroidism caused by Water Clear Cell Hyperplasia (WCCH) frequently belong to blood group O. Two control groups were defined from the same time period as 32 cases of WCCH treated at our clinic: one was a consecutive patient series with other forms of primary hyperparathyroidism (n = 864) and the other was the population in a geographically defined area in Sweden (n = 59,862). The blood group distribution of the patients with WCCH differed from the distribution of the patients with other forms of primary hyperparathyr

Clinical Impact of ABO and Rhesus D Blood Type Groups in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure.

Blood group systems based on red blood cell antigens are genetically determined and can identify patients at risk. Type non-O of the ABO blood group system has been associated with coronary artery disease, thrombosis, and a worse prognosis. The present study evaluated the distribution of blood group types in patients with heart failure (HF) and the impact on clinical outcome. We evaluated the ABO and Rhesus D antigen (RhD) blood types in a large cohort of chronic HF patients (n = 3,815). ABO blood type distribution in the HF population was not significantly different to that reported in the ge

Prognostic value of ABO blood group in patients with gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a link between the ABO blood groups and prognoses for several types of malignancies. However, little is known about the relationship between the ABO blood groups and prognosis in patients with gastric cancer (GC). The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic performance of ABO blood groups in patients with GC. METHODS: A total of 1412 GC patients who had undergone curative intent surgery between January 2005 and January 2010 participated in the present study. A prognostic nomogram was constructed to improve the predictive capacity for patient

Effect of long-term frozen storage on antibodies in blood samples: immunoglobulin, tetanus toxin antibody, and ABO antibody.

The Japanese Red Cross Blood Services archives donor blood samples from all donations for look-back surveys. These samples, approximately 5 million per year, are stored frozen at -30°C for 11 years and are subsequently discarded. Because such samples may also be valuable for antibody-related research and other purposes after the mandated storage period, we evaluated their potential applicability, with a particular focus on the preservation of anti- body levels. Fresh samples were compared with frozen-stored samples (-30°C for 14 years: 11 years of mandatory good manufacturing practice storage

Anti-A and anti-B titers in pooled group O platelets are comparable to apheresis platelets.

BACKGROUND: Although uncommon, acute hemolytic transfusion reactions (AHTRs) have been reported after transfusion of group O single-donor apheresis platelets (SDPs) to group A, B, and AB recipients. Current methods for identifying "high-titer" SDPs include tube and gel methods. The risk of a high-titer unit is considered low with group O, poststorage, pooled platelet concentrates (PPLTs); however, data regarding anti-A and anti-B titers in PPLTs are lacking. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Anti-A and anti-B titers were determined in 185 PPLTs by direct agglutination using manual gel and tube method

[Use of erythrocyte sediments in a regional hospital].

At a medium sized hospital, efforts were made to economize therapeutic use of blood by replacing whole blood by cell concentrates with a hematocrit of 75%. Transfusion of red cell concentrates was increased from 5 to 30% within one year. The number of blood units transfused to individual patients was generally very small and it should therefore be possible to increase the use of red cell concentrates substantially above this figure without creating problems. The clinical advantages of transfusing red cell concentrates containing a negligible amount of plasma are discussed.
