Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) are principal enzymes responsible for metabolism of ethanol. Functional polymo … of ALDH2-active phenotypes of rectal mucosa was 33% greater than ALDH2-inactive phenotypes at 200μM acetaldehyde. The protein contents in normal rectal mucosa were in the following order: ADH1>ALDH2>ADH3≈ALDH1A1, whereas those of ADH2, ADH4, and ALDH3A1 were fairly low. Both activity and content of ADH1 were significantly decreased in rectal tumors, whereas th …

Alcohol metabolism results in the production of acetaldehyde, a compound that is much more toxic than ethanol itself. Hepatic aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) is the main enzymatic system responsible for acetaldehyde clearance from the hepatocyte. The objective of this study was to determine the modifications in ALDH activity due to chronic alcohol abuse and liver disease. ALDH activity was determined in samples of liver tissue from 69 alcoholic and 82 nonalcoholic subjects, with and without liver disease. According to the results of liver pathology examination, alcoholic patients were classified…

Industrial release of mercury into the local Minamata environment with consequent poisoning of local communities through contaminated fish a … ry with a minor β-HgS phase. Density functional theory indicated energetic preference for α-mercuri-acetaldehyde as a waste product of aldehyde production. The consequences of this alternative species in the "classic" mercury poisoning should be re-evaluated.

Many uremic solutes retained in chronic kidney disease are volatile, and can be detected by breath testing. We compared the exhaled breath of subjects with end stage renal disease (ESRD) to healthy volunteers to identify volatile compounds that can serve as a potential breathprint for renal failure. We analyzed the exhaled breath of 86 ESRD subjects and 25 healthy volunteers using selected-ion flow-tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). Using a random forests classification model, we identified three known volatiles (2-propanol, ammonia, acetaldehyde) and two unknown volatiles ([Formula: see text] …

The aromatic aldehyde synthase (AAS), PonAAS2, from the gall-inducing sawfly has been identified as a biosynthetic enzyme for indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), a key molecule of the plant hormone auxin, which is thought to play a role in gall induction. Unlike other insect AASs that convert Dopa, PonAAS2 uniquely converts l-tryptophan (Trp) into indole-3-acetaldehyde, a precursor of IAA. In this study, an examination of AAS enzymes from various insect species revealed that the ability to convert Trp has been acquired in only a very limited taxonomic group. Comparative analysis between PonAAS2 and Dj…

The solar-driven photocatalytic oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes has emerged as a sustainable route for chemical manufacturing, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional thermal and metal-catalyzed methods that rely on harsh conditions and toxic oxidants. Among reported systems, polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has demonstrated exceptional selectivity toward value-added aldehydes, including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyceraldehyde, and benzaldehyde. This work reviews recent progress in PCN-based photocatalysts for upgrading methanol, ethanol, glycerol, and benz…

About half of northeastern Asians lack ALDH2 (Acetaldehyde Dehydrogenase 2), an enzyme involved in alcohol metabolism. People with deficient ALDH2 often experience facial flushing after drinking a small dose of alcohol. The present study examined the effect of a small dose of alcohol on driving-related behavior of northeastern Asians (Japanese). Participants were 9 Japanese flushers and 12 Japanese nonflushers. They were evaluated using a driving simulator and self-report of intoxication after ingesting 0.6g/kg or 0.4g/kg of alcohol or a placebo. Facial flushers were more likely to experience …

Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) from excessive alcohol intake has a unique gut microbiota profile. The disease progression-free survival in ALD patients has been associated with the degree of gut dysbiosis. The vicious cycles between gut dysbiosis and the disease progression in ALD including: an increase of acetaldehyde production and bile acid secretion, impaired gut barrier, enrichment of circulating microbiota, toxicities of microbiota metabolites, a cascade of pro-inflammatory chemokines or cytokines, and augmentation in the generation of reactive oxygen species. The aforementioned pat…

Cyclodextrins (CDs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are emerging absorbent materials for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, we have used combination of modified CDs and levulinic acid to form four DESs analogs, referred to as supramolecular low-melting mixtures (LMMs), to study their absorption characteristics towards five VOCs, namely acetaldehyde, butanone, dichloromethane, thiophene, and toluene. The supramolecular LMMs showed up to 250-fold reduction in the vapor-liquid partition coefficients compared to water. The overall absorption capacity found to be syn…

Hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) is an important organosulfur compound in the atmosphere. In this work, we studied the formation mechanism of HMS via the reaction of formaldehyde with dissolved SO2 using the quantum chemistry calculations. The results show that the barrier (9.7 kcal mol-1) of the HCHO + HSO3 - reaction is higher than that (1.6 kcal mol-1) of the HCHO + SO3 2- reaction, indicating that the HCHO + SO3 2- reaction is easier to occur. For comparison, the reaction of acetaldehyde with dissolved SO2 also was discussed. The barriers for the CH3CHO + HSO3 - reaction and CH3CHO + SO3 2- r…

Coronary spasm plays an important role in the pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease, including angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), silent myocardial ischemia, and sudden death. The prevalence of coronary spasm is higher among East Asians probably due to genetic as well as environmental factors. ALDH2 eliminates toxic aldehydes including 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE) derived from lipid peroxidation and acrolein in tobacco smoking as well as ethanol-derived acetaldehyde and thereby protects tissues and cells from oxidative damage. Deficient variant ALDH2*2 genotype is prevalent am…

The effects of thermal (pasteurization and sterilization) and non-thermal (ultrasound and plasma) processing on the composition of prebiotic and non-prebiotic acerola juices were evaluated using NMR and GC-MS coupled to chemometrics. The increase in the amount of Vitamin C was the main feature observed after thermal processing, followed by malic acid, choline, trigonelline, and acetaldehyde. On the other hand, thermal processing increased the amount of 2-furoic acid, a degradation product from ascorbic acid, as well as influenced the decrease in the amount of esters and alcohols. In general, t…

This work seeks to understand the kinetics of O2 and SO2 consumption of air-saturated red wine as a function of its chemical composition, and to describe the chemical changes suffered during the process in relation to the kinetics. Oxygen Consumption Rates (OCRs) are faster with higher copper and epigallocatechin contents and with higher absorbance at 620nm and slower with higher levels of gallic acid and catechin terminal units in tannins. Acetaldehyde Reactive Polyphenols (ARPs) may be key elements determining OCRs. It is confirmed that SO2 is poorly consumed in the first saturation. Phenyla…

The adverse effect of reactive chemical residues on the quality of drug products has necessitated the determination of low-molecular-weight … over 30 typical excipients. The most abundant aldehydes found in the samples were formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, for which a rapid and reliable routine quantification method by readily available SHS-GC instrumentation coupled with flame-ionization detection was also developed and validated.

Alcohol is much more slowly eliminated in the fetus than in the mother (< 50%). The ethanol and its derivative the acetaldehyde have a constant dose-effect on the development of the nervous system central. The individual susceptibility to alchol teratogenic effect in utero is responsible of variable clinical phenotype. This teratogenicity is constant during all the development of the central nervous system. The diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) associates three criteria: delay of pre- and postnatal growth, abnormal development of the central nervous system, craniofacial abnormalities. …

The immediate effects of externally added alcohols on CO2 production and O2 consumption of suspensions of washed, aerated baker's yeast were studied by stopped-flow membrane inlet mass spectrometry. Glucose-supported fermentation was progressively inhibited by increasing ethanol concentration (0-20%, v/v). The inhibition by ethanol was quite different from that observed for acetaldehyde; thus it is unlikely that toxicity of the latter can account for the observed effects. For five different alkanols (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol and 1-butanol) increasing inhibition of anaerobic fe…
