Effect of sensorineural hearing loss on acoustic stapedius reflex growth functions.

The growth function of the acoustic stapedius reflex was measured in subjects with normal hearing and sensorineural hearing loss of cochlear origin. The effects of age and magnitude of hearing loss were controlled. Activating stimuli were 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz tones and broadband noise. Stapedius muscle activity was inferred from acoustic impedance measures in the contralateral ear. The mean growth functions for tones were essentially linear in log-log plots with the rate of growth equal for the two groups. The mean growth function for the noise signal was curvilinear for the normal hearing g

Behavioral and EEG effects of GABAergic manipulation of the nigro-tectal pathway in the Wistar audiogenic rat (WAR) strain II: an EEG wavelet analysis and retrograde neuronal tracer approach.

The role of the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNPr) and superior colliculus (SC) network in rat strains susceptible to audiogenic seizures still remain underexplored in epileptology. In a previous study from our laboratory, the GABAergic drugs bicuculline (BIC) and muscimol (MUS) were microinjected into the deep layers of either the anterior SC (aSC) or the posterior SC (pSC) in animals of the Wistar audiogenic rat (WAR) strain submitted to acoustic stimulation, in which simultaneous electroencephalographic (EEG) recording of the aSC, pSC, SNPr and striatum was performed. Only MUS microinj…

Simultaneous measurement of noise-activated middle-ear muscle reflex and stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions.

Otoacoustic emissions serve as a noninvasive probe of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex. Stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) elicited by a low-level probe tone may be the optimal type of emission for studying MOC effects because at low levels, the probe itself does not elicit the MOC reflex [Guinan et al. (2003) J. Assoc. Res. Otolaryngol. 4:521]. Based on anatomical considerations, the MOC reflex activated by ipsilateral acoustic stimulation (mediated by the crossed olivocochlear bundle) is predicted to be stronger than the reflex to contralateral stimulation. Broadband nois…

Contralateral suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions in patients with cerebello-pontine angle tumor.

OBJECTIVE: During measurement of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), acoustic stimulation of the contralateral ear reduces or suppresses TEOAE amplitude. This is thought to be due to the inhibitory control that the medial efferent auditory nerve exerts on outer hair cell (OHC) function. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cerebello-pontine angle (CPA) tumor on the medial efferent nerve pathways to both tumor and non-tumor ears by examining alterations in TEOAE amplitude that result from contralateral acoustic stimulation. DESIGN: Contralateral suppression …

Facial nerve outcome after acoustic neuroma surgery: a study from the era of cranial nerve monitoring.

The introduction of intraoperative cranial nerve monitoring in posterior fossa surgery has greatly aided the surgeon in identification and anatomic preservation of cranial nerves. As a result, the long-term function of the facial nerve continues to improve after removal of acoustic neuroma. Herein, we report our long-term (1 year or greater) facial nerve outcome in 129 patients who underwent surgical removal of their acoustic neuromas with the aid of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring between 1986 and 1990. The facial nerve was anatomically preserved in 99.2% of the patients, and 90% o

Protection from acoustic trauma is not a primary function of the medial olivocochlear efferent system.

The medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system is an important component of an active mechanical outer hair cell system in mammals. An extensive neurophysiological literature demonstrates that the MOC system attenuates the response of the cochlea to sound by reducing the gain of the outer hair cell mechanical response to stimulation. Despite a growing understanding of MOC physiology, the biological role of the MOC system in mammalian audition remains uncertain. Some evidence suggests that the MOC system functions in a protective role by acting to reduce receptor damage during intense acoustic

Piezo1-Targeted Magnetoacoustic Nanobubbles Rescue Alzheimer's Pathology by Electromechanical Neuromodulation and Amyloid-β Clearance.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) is considered a core pathological feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and its clearance efficiency is highly dependent on the function of the Piezo1 channel in microglia. However, the activity of Piezo1 is impaired under the pathological conditions of AD, and existing pharmacological strategies struggle to achieve precise targeted intervention in deep brain regions. To address these concerns, our research proposes a synergistic therapeutic paradigm leveraging transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation (TMAS) to actuate microglial-Piezo1-targeted magnetic nanobubbles (PT-MNBs) fo…

Effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation paired with tones on electrophysiological markers of auditory perception.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has been introduced as a non-invasive alternative to invasive vagus nerve stimulation (iVNS). While iVNS paired with tones has been highlighted as a potential effective therapy for the treatment of auditory disorders such as tinnitus, there is still scarce data available confirming the efficacy of non-invasive taVNS. Here, we assessed the effect of taVNS paired with acoustic stimuli on sensory-related electrophysiological responses. METHODS: A total of 22 healthy participants were investigated with a taVNS tone-pairing parad

Plasma membrane nanoporation as a possible mechanism behind infrared excitation of cells.

OBJECTIVE: Short infrared (IR) laser pulses have been used to stimulate action potentials in neurons both in vivo and in vitro. However, the mechanism(s) underlying this phenomenon has remained elusive. In vitro studies have found that pulsed IR exposure generates a nearly instant change in capacitance in the plasma membrane, characterized by inward rectification, a common feature in pore-forming exposures, such as electrical pulses and acoustic shock waves. Based on this similarity, we hypothesize that the mechanism of IR stimulation is the formation of short-lived nanopores in the plasma mem

Mechanically evoked shortening of outer hair cells isolated from the guinea pig organ of Corti.

Outer hair cells isolated from the mammalian hearing organ have been shown to respond to mechanical stimuli at acoustic frequencies by expressing a change in cell length (e.g. Canlon et al., 1988). The acoustically evoked response is characterised by both a tonic length change following the envelope of the stimulus, and a frequency-dependent phasic component. We show here that mechanical stimulation at much lower frequencies directed at the cell body also elicits length changes of the outer hair cells. When the apical pole of isolated outer hair cells was compressed with a quartz fibre, a shor

Electromagnetic stimulation of the auditory system: effects and side-effects.

Extracranial electromagnetic stimulation (EMS) is a recently developed clinical technique which may be used in place of conventional transcutaneous electrical stimulation to activate the central and peripheral nervous systems. This technique is widely used in neurology and otolaryngology for non-invasive stimulation of the brain and facial nerve. EMS uses electromagnetic field pulses which pass unimpeded through the cranium and soft tissues to activate excitable membranes of volume conductors. In this series of studies, the effects and side-effects of electromagnetic stimulation on the auditor

mAChRs in the grasshopper brain mediate excitation by activation of the AC/PKA and the PLC second-messenger pathways.

The species-specific sound production of acoustically communicating grasshoppers can be stimulated by pressure injection of both nicotinic and muscarinic agonists into the central body complex and a small neuropil situated posterior and dorsal to it. To determine the role of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) in the control of acoustic communication behavior and to identify the second-messenger pathways affected by mAChR-activation, muscarinic agonists and membrane-permeable drugs known to interfere with specific mechanisms of intracellular signaling pathways were pressure injected to

The relation between the pip-and-pop effect and audiovisual integration capacity.

The pip-and-pop effect describes the phenomenon wherein a nonspatial auditory signal significantly enhances visual search efficiency for a single target in a dynamic array, which may depend on audiovisual integration. However, how individual differences in audiovisual integration capacity modulate this effect remains unclear. The present study provides the first systematic examination of the relationship between audiovisual integration capacity and the pip-and-pop effect across two experiments. In Experiment 1, we replicated the classic pip-and-pop effect using a dynamic single-target visual s

Exposure to a specific prompt topography predicts its relative efficiency when teaching intraverbal behavior to children with autism spectrum disorder.

Comparisons of the relative efficiency of different prompt topographies (visual or auditory), when teaching intraverbal behavior to children with disabilities, have yielded idiosyncratic results. Recent research has shown that previous exposure to a specific prompt type may affect its efficiency when teaching intraverbal behavior to preschool children. The current study was an attempt to replicate these results with 3 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. For all participants, increased exposure to one prompt topography was sufficient to make it relatively more efficient as measure

Stochastic resonance in the human vestibular system - Noise-induced facilitation of vestibulospinal reflexes.

BACKGROUND: There is strong evidence that the presence of noise can enhance information processing in sensory systems via stochastic resonance (SR). OBJECTIVES: To examine the presence of SR in human vestibulospinal reflex function. METHODS: Healthy subjects were stimulated with 1 Hz sinusoidal GVS of varying amplitudes (0-1.9 mA). Coherence between GVS input and stimulation-induced motion responses was determined and psychometric function fits were subsequently used to determine individual vestibulospinal reflex thresholds. This procedure was repeated with additional application of impercep

The sound of actions in apraxia.

Studies in nonhuman and human primates have demonstrated that sound-producing actions are mapped on the same mirror circuits that are activated during the visual recognition and execution of actions [1-12]. However, no causative link between the auditory recognition and execution of actions has been provided thus far. Here, we sought to determine whether patients with apraxia, who are by definition impaired in performing specific gestures, are also impaired in recognizing sounds specifically linked to human actions. Twenty-eight left-hemisphere-damaged patients with or without limb and/or bucc
