Heart-Lung Interactions in Pulmonary Hypertension due to Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction.

Pulmonary hypertension associated with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (PH-HFpEF) is a common and high-risk clinical condition characterized by the convergence of pulmonary vascular dysfunction and right ventricular (RV) stress. Despite its prevalence, the pathophysiological mechanisms of development and progression of PH-HFpEF remain largely unknown. Consequently, there are no current therapies that target PH-HFpEF other than optimization of treatment for HFpEF and some limited adaptation of therapies for pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). This review examines PH-HFpEF throug

Transcriptomic Analysis of Hemolymph in Pollen-Foraging and Non-Pollen-Foraging Apis mellifera ligustica and Identification of Candidate Genes.

Foraging is a physiologically demanding behavior in honey bees, requiring substantial energy expenditure and continuous physiological adaptation. To investigate the molecular responses of hemolymph during foraging, pollen-foraging workers returning from pear flowers and non-foraging workers of Apis mellifera ligustica were subjected to hemolymph transcriptome sequencing using the Illumina platform. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, followed by Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses, and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) va

Exogenous Pyrroloquinoline Quinone Application Enhances Low-Phosphorus Adaptation in Rice by Modulating Redox Homeostasis Under Variable Light.

Phosphorus (P) bioavailability in soil is often limited, restricting plant growth. Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a natural quinone compound with potent redox-cycling capabilities. In this study, we investigated the physiological effects of exogenously applied PQQ on rice adaptation to P deficiency. A P-sensitive rice cultivar (Meixiangzhan) was treated with 0.1 μM PQQ under different light intensities (High Light, HL: 800 μmol m-2 s-1; Low Light, LL: 300 μmol m-2 s-1) and P supplies (Sufficient P, SP; Deficient P, DP). The effects of PQQ on rice growth, P uptake, photosynthesis, and the an

Polyamines Interaction with Gaseous Signaling Molecules for Resilience Against Drought and Heat Stress in Plants.

Plants face a range of environmental stresses, such as heat and drought, that significantly reduce their growth, development, and yield. Plants have developed complex signaling networks to regulate physiological processes and improve their ability to withstand stress. The key regulators of plant stress responses include polyamines (PAs) and gaseous signaling molecules (GSM), such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nitric oxide (NO), methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and ethylene (ET). The functions of PAs and GSM in stress perception, signal transduction, and stress-responsive

Mechanosensitive ion channels in intestinal homeostasis and disease.

Mechanical deformation is integral to intestinal physiology, linking luminal transit to epithelial adaptation and motor control. These physical cues engage multiple mechanotransduction pathways that coordinate cellular adaptation and help preserve intestinal homeostasis. Inflammation, obstruction and matrix remodelling alter both the physical input and the state of the responding cell, allowing normally transient signals to persist or acquire pathological consequences. Ion channels act at several levels of this process. PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 provide a direct route for force-gated cation entry; mec

Investigating Antiprotozoal Chemotherapies with Novel Proteomic Tools-Chances and Limitations: A Critical Review.

Identification of drug targets and biochemical investigations on mechanisms of action are major issues in modern drug development. The present article is a critical review of the classical "one drug"-"one target" paradigm. In fact, novel methods for target deconvolution and for investigation of resistant strains based on protein mass spectrometry have shown that multiple gene products and adaptation mechanisms are involved in the responses of pathogens to xenobiotics rather than one single gene or gene product. Resistance to drugs may be linked to differential expression of other proteins than

Progenitor Cell Heterogeneity in the Adult Carotid Body Germinal Niche.

Somatic stem cells confer plasticity to adult tissues, permitting their maintenance, repair and adaptation to a changing environment. Adult germinal niches supporting somatic stem cells have been thoroughly characterized throughout the organism, including in central and peripheral nervous systems. Stem cells do not reside alone within their niches, but they are rather accompanied by multiple progenitor cells that not only contribute to the progression of stem cell lineage but also regulate their behavior. Understanding the mechanisms underlying these interactions within the niche is crucial to

Network Modeling Reveals Cross Talk of MAP Kinases during Adaptation to Caspofungin Stress in Aspergillus fumigatus.

Mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are highly conserved in eukaryotic organisms. In pathogenic fungi, their activities were assigned to different physiological functions including drug adaptation and resistance. Aspergillus fumigatus is a human pathogenic fungus, which causes life-threatening invasive infections. Therapeutic options against invasive mycoses are still limited. One of the clinically used drugs is caspofungin, which specifically targets the fungal cell wall biosynthesis. A systems biology approach, based on comprehensive transcriptome data sets and mathematical modeling, w

[Transcriptomic dissection of low-light tolerance and regulatory mechanism of CsCOL2 in cucumber].

Cucumber is a light-demanding crop, and low-light stress readily induces shade avoidance syndrome (SAS), leading to yield reduction. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the shade avoidance response in cucumber under low-light conditions, In this study, transcriptome sequencing analysis for low-light tolerance was first performed in cucumber, and a downregulated gene CsCOL2 responding to low-light stress was identified. To clarify the role of CsCOL2 in the response to low-light stress and dissect its regulatory mechanism, we constructed overexpression and RNAi transgenic vectors of

Early life stages of stress-tolerant corals (Favites spp.) exhibit tolerance to acute thermal stress.

The Bolinao-Anda Reef Complex (BARC) in northwestern Philippines is one of the most heavily impacted reef systems in the Philippines, experiencing recurring marine heat waves and declining water quality due to coastal development and mariculture. As ocean warming and declining water quality continue, stress-tolerant coral species are expected to become increasingly dominant. Understanding how these corals respond to elevated temperatures in the early stages is critical for predicting future reef trajectories. In this study, we examined survival and development of embryos, settlement and surviv

Lipid remodeling enables adaptation to chronic hyperosmotic stress.

Lipid droplets (LDs) accumulate in response to diverse cellular stresses. However, their regulation and physiological roles remain poorly understood in most contexts. Here, we show that in budding yeast, chronic hyperosmotic stress induces sustained LD accumulation. Unlike the transient LD response observed during acute osmotic shock, chronic stress triggers prolonged, Dga1-dependent triacylglycerol synthesis. In the absence of triacylglycerol synthesis, cellular fitness is impaired. Lipidomic profiling reveals extensive membrane remodeling during chronic hyperosmotic stress, most notably an i

Physiological and health demands of Formula 1 motor racing: a comprehensive review with driver performance coach insight.

There is a need to better understand the specific demands and characteristics of Formula 1 (eg, high accelerations/decelerations, environmental stress) to optimise driver performance and health; however, data are scarce and much of the knowledge is held within the sport by the teams, drivers and the drivers' Performance Coaches. This review combined all relevant published research data available for motor car drivers (considering what is known regarding the neuromuscular and strength characteristics (6 articles), and the metabolic, cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses (19 articles)) w

Synergistic regulation of abiotic stress adaptation by copper miRNAs miR398 and miR408 in melon.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) in general and miR398 and miR408 in particular have emerged as key regulators of plant adaptation to individual stress, yet their roles regulating the crop response to diverse unfavorable environments remain poorly explored. Here, we report transgenic melon (Cucumis melo) plants overexpressing miR398 and miR408 precursors, two conserved miRNAs involved in copper-related regulatory pathways and associated with stress response. Engineered plants exhibited enhanced vegetative development, including stem elongation, internode formation, root architecture, and leaf production. Th

Plant water adaptation strategies and lithological driving mechanisms in karst ecosystems: A review.

The karst region of Southwest China is characterized by extensive bedrock exposure and limited soil cover, forming a dual structure of soil and water. Such unique geological background makes epikarst water a critical water source for plants, while bedrock lithology is the key factor driving the development and water storage capacity of epikarst zone. Under the combined impacts of extreme climate events and frequent karstic drought, the sustainability of vegetation restoration faces severe challenges. It is crucial to clarify the influences of lithology-regulated water supply on plant adaptatio

A mechanistic modeling framework to interpret ACTH stimulation tests across HPA axis adaptation states and glucocorticoid feedback dynamics.

The hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis is a key regulatory system coordinating endocrine responses to physiological and psychological stress. While the ACTH stimulation test remains a cornerstone of adrenal function assessment, its interpretation is complicated by the dynamic and adaptive nature of the HPA axis under chronic stress exposure. In particular, prolonged stress induces glandular remodeling, glucocorticoid receptor (GR) resistance and delayed feedback recovery, all of which may alter test outcomes without indicating primary adrenal failure. In this study, we present a mechani

Deciphering functional adaptability of microalgal-bacterial granular sludge under salicylic acid stress.

In this study, the impact of salicylic acid (SA), a prevalent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug metabolite, on microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) systems was systematically investigated. Results demonstrated that the MBGS system exhibited high pollutant removal efficiency in both synthetic and real wastewater containing 1 mg/L SA, achieving 81.6 % organics, 72.3 % nitrogen, and 77.1 % phosphorus removal. This performance was attributed to increased extracellular polymeric substance secretion and the proliferation of stress-tolerant Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria and Bacteroidota, wh

Key determinants of adaptive strategies of goats to a 2-day nutritional challenge during early lactation.

Little is known about the key determinants of the physiological adaptations to environmental challenges and how these determinants interact. We evaluated how the response/recovery profiles to a short-term nutritional challenge during early lactation are affected by early-life nutritional strategies in dairy goats divergently selected for functional longevity. We used 72 females, split into two cohorts, daughters of Alpine bucks divergently selected for functional longevity. The females from the two lines were fed with two divergent diets, normal vs low-energy, from weaning until the middle of

Postnatal Nutrient Repartitioning due to Adaptive Developmental Programming.

Fetal stress induces developmental adaptations that result in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and low birthweight. These adaptations reappropriate nutrients to the most essential tissues, which benefits fetal survival. The same adaptations are detrimental to growth efficiency and carcass value in livestock, however, because muscle is disproportionally targeted. IUGR adipocytes, liver tissues, and pancreatic β-cells also exhibit functional adaptations. Identifying mechanisms underlying adaptive changes is fundamental to improving outcomes and value in low birthweight livestock. The artic
