BACKGROUND: Aldosterone-producing adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare malignancy, which is usually diagnosed by histopathological examination of the excised tumor. In inoperable cases, aldosterone-producing ACC diagnosed by immunohistochemical staining of the metastatic tumor for Cytochrome P450 (CYP) 11β has not previously been reported and even in that case staining for adrenocortical-specific adrenal 4 binding protein/steroidogenic factor1 (Ad4BP/SF1) and steroidogenic enzymes has not been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 67-year-old Japanese woman with aldosterone-produ

INTRODUCTION: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a heterogeneous and rare disease. At presentation or at the time of a recurrence, the disease commonly spreads to the liver, lungs, lymph nodes, and bones. The brain has only rarely been reported as a site of metastases.
OBJECTIVE: The aims of this report were to describe the clinical characteristics of patients with ACC who developed brain metastasis and were evaluated at the National Cancer Institute.
METHODS: We describe the history and clinical presentation of six patients with ACC and metastatic disease in the brain. Images of the six pati

Adrenocortical oncocytoma is a rare epithelial tumor only described in adults. We report the case of a 12-year-old female who presented a left adrenal mass with abdominal pain, fatigue, acne vulgaris, and elevation of the androstenedione and total testosterone. She had an adrenalectomy. A diagnosis of adrenocortical oncocytoma was made after detailed histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural studies.

The right suprarenal mass was found in a 21-year-old housewife. Her major clinical features were amenorrhea, polydipsia and buffalo hump obesity. Endocrinological and roentgenological studies suggested the presence of Cushing's syndrome due to adrenocortical carcinoma in addition to ipsilateral renal stone. The huge adrenal tumor and renal calculus were successfully removed. The histological diagnosis was adrenocortical carcinoma. Seventeen days after the operation, cis-platinum was administered to prevent the recurrence of tumor development. No recurrence has been observed for approximately 2

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 68-year-old man of small stature, previously always healthy and with a grown-up daughter, was suspected of having carcinoma of the colon with metastasis to the right kidney. At laparotomy internal female genitalia with cancerous changes were unexpectedly discovered in the left adnexae. The colon carcinoma, the right adrenocortical tumour and left adnexae were resected.
INVESTIGATIONS: Histological examination revealed adenocarcinoma of the colon, right adrenocortical adenoma and a Brenner tumour of the left female adnexae. Postoperative tests showed increased

The malignant forms of endocrine tumors are a worthwhile target for surgery, particularly since radiotherapy and chemotherapy have shown far less, if any, results. In contrast, the combination of scalpel and anatomical reduction of the hormonal matrix proved to be of high therapeutic values. The well-known saying of Moynihan: "A surgeon is an internist who operates" refers to the necessary prerequisite for such interventions--a well founded pathophysiological knowledge.

BACKGROUND: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) affects approx. 2 in 1,000,000 individuals in the USA, and is more common in females than males. Adrenocortical carcinoma often presents with severe symptoms, such as abdominal pain, high blood pressure, acne, hair overgrowth, and voice deepening.
OBJECTIVES: Research on ACC constitutes a large body of published data. There is an increased need for easy access to ACC-derived biological material. Moreover, there are limited numbers of human cell lines available. For this reason, we attempted to differentiate human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC

Adrenocortical carcinomas (ACCs) are rare malignancies with an incidence of one to two per million per year. Aldosterone-producing ACCs (APACs) are extremely rare with an incidence less than 1%. We describe a rare case of APAC, presenting with episodic lower-limb weakness and hypertension. Our patient was found to have serum aldosterone levels of 20.8 ng/dL (2.5-15.2) with persistent hypokalaemia and a 9.7×8.3×7.7 cm right adrenal mass, which was suspicious of malignancy on evaluation. He underwent a complete surgical resection which confirmed the diagnosis of ACC and normalised his aldosteron

1. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) was extracted from two normal human adrenal cortices and from five aldosterone-producing adenomas (APA). 2. The five APA could be categorized, on the basis of in vivo aldosterone responsiveness to angiotensin infusion and upright posture, into two APA responsive to both stimuli, two responsive only to angiotensin infusion, and one unresponsive to either stimulus. 3. RNA was reverse transcribed and coamplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with an internal standard of renin complementary DNA (cDNA) containing a 60 base pair insertion. Renin mRNA in the APA was com

PURPOSE: Brain metastases rarely complicate the natural history of patients with adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). No information is available regarding the life expectancy and efficacy of treatments in ACC patients with brain involvement.
METHODS: A pooled analysis was performed by searching on PubMed and using the keywords: "brain metastases in adrenocortical carcinoma", and "leptomeningeal metastases in adrenocortical carcinoma". Four patients diagnosed at Spedali Civili Hospital in Brescia were added to the analysis. Data concerning demographic, disease characteristics, adopted treatments a

Direct intracardiac extension of abdominal malignant diseases represents a rare but challenging situation. Removal of the intracardiac extension requires cardiopulmonary bypass with systemic anticoagulation, which could potentially increase the risk of bleeding if it is associated with liver resection. This report describes a 2-stage surgical approach for malignant disease with intracardiac extension in a high-risk patient. Atrial thrombectomy was performed first, followed by right portal vein embolization. Four months after the cardiac surgical procedure, the patient underwent right hepatecto

INTRODUCTION: Surgery is the initial treatment of choice for patients with resectable adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). We sought to determine factors associated with non-operative management of resectable ACC.
METHODS: 2004-2016 National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried to identify patients with AJCC/ENSAT Stage I-III ACC. Patients who underwent surgery (S) were compared to those who did not undergo surgery (NS). Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with NS. Kaplan-Meier estimates used to assess survival.
RESULTS: Two thousand-seventy patients with Stage

A 43-year-old man presented with a pulmonary nodule in the left lower lobe and he consulted our hospital one year after resection of left adrenocortical carcinoma. We performed a wedge resection of the left lower pulmonary lobe for diagnosis. The tumor was diagnosed as a metastatic sarcoma, but the primary site could not be resolved. We assessed the histopathology of the adrenal tumor, which was obtained from the patient's former hospital, and it showed that the tumor consisted of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. This enabled us to diagnose the nodule as a pulmonary metastasis fr

OBJECTIVE: The authors report a primary spinal intramedullary adrenal cortical adenoma in a patient with spinal dysraphism presenting with bilateral leg pain and urinary frequency.
METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging, L2 laminectomy with resection of mass, and pathological and immunohistochemical analysis of resected mass revealed the diagnosis.
RESULTS: Microscopic and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the diagnosis as a primary intramedullary tumor of adrenal cortical origin.
CONCLUSION: The occurrence of a primary adrenal tumor in the spinal cord is rare and difficult to explain bas
