This study was undertaken to understand better how damage to the anterior visual pathway may affect the relationship between the visual and pupillomotor systems. The relative afferent pupillary defect and the interocular difference in visual field mean deviation (determined by the Humphrey Field Analyzer Statpac program) were correlated in 137 patients. A moderate linear correlation (r = .66) was found. In 25 patients tested by both static and kinetic perimetry, the correlation could not be significantly improved by considering field loss outside of 30 degrees. The correlation was further stud

The relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) was measured with neutral density filters in ten patients, each of whom had a dense cataract in one eye only. In each instance, the cataract reduced visual acuity to counting fingers or worse, whereas visual acuity in the other eye was 20/25 or better. All patients with mature or nuclear cataracts had a measureable RAPD in the other eye (mean, 0.44 log unit). In each instance, after extraction of the cataract, the RAPD disappeared. Thus, a dense cataract causes an RAPD in the contralateral eye by increasing the pupillomotor effectiveness of the sti

Background/Aims: Functional anorectal pain (FARP) is a functional gastrointestinal disease, which belongs to chronic pelvic floor pain. The … ectal pain and obtained similar results. Conclusions: The RSEP can be used to evaluate the state of afferent pathways in FARP patients; The longer latency and lower peak amplitude of RSEP indicate the functional defects of the anorectal afferent pathway. It can provide an objective evidence for the neuropathy of FARP. In addition, the pathophysiology of FARP is als …

The effects of sustained lung inflation on systemic vascular capacitance (SVC), systemic vascular resistance (SVR), and cardiac sympathetic efferent nerve activity (SENA) were investigated in anesthetized dogs. By use of a total cardiopulmonary bypass, the lungs were inflated to tracheal pressures of 10, 15, and 20 mmHg. Tracheal pressures of 10, 15, and 20 mmHg increased system vascular capacitance by 1.4, 3.1, and 4.3 ml/kg and decreased systemic vascular resistance by 0.11, 0.15, and 0.16 mmHg.kg.min-ml-1, respectively, at low carotid sinus pressure (CSP) of 41 mmHg. SENA showed a concomita

Short latency evoked potentials were recorded from sites overlying the cervical and thoracic vertebrae, the clavicles, mastoid processes and cerebral cortex, following percutaneous stimulation of median nerve fibres at the elbow, wrist and fingers in 23 normal subjects. At least four major early components each with simultaneous positive and negative constituents, plus the first component (N20) of the cortical response, were all found to be mediated by sensory afferent fibres with conduction velocity 65--75 m/sec in the forearm of one subject. Study of the distribution of these potentials, usi

We recently reported [Peng YJ, Nanduri J, Wang N, Xie Z, Fox AP, Prabhakar NR. Function (Oxf) 6: zqaf020, 2025] that fentanyl activates carotid body (CB) afferents via kappa opioid receptors (KORs), while CB denervation exacerbates, coadministration of fentanyl with a KOR agonist attenuates opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD). These findings indicated that CB chemoreflex activation by fentanyl may counteract OIRD. The present study investigated the cellular mechanisms underlying CB afferent activation by fentanyl. We hypothesized that Ca2+ signaling in glomus cells mediates CB activat

The sensory neurons innervating the urinary bladder and distal colon project to similar regions of the central nervous system and often are affected simultaneously by various diseases and disorders, including spinal cord injury. Anatomical and physiological commonalities between the two organs involve the participation of shared spinally derived pathways, allowing mechanisms of communication between the bladder and colon. Prior electrophysiological data from our laboratory suggest that the bladder also may receive sensory innervation from a nonspinal source through the vagus nerve, which inner

Retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) chemoreceptors are regulated by inputs from the carotid bodies (CB) and from pulmonary mechanoreceptors. Here we tested whether RTN neurons are influenced by 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptor-expressing C-fiber vagal afferents. In urethan-anesthetized rats, selective activation of vagal C-fiber afferents by phenylbiguanide (PBG) eliminated the phrenic nerve discharge (PND) and inhibited RTN neurons (n = 24). PBG had no inhibitory effect in vagotomized rats. Muscimol injection into the solitary tract nucleus, commissural part, reduced inhibition of PND and RTN by

INTRODUCTION: Subclinical neuropathy is an important feature of spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) but the true prevalence and electrophysiological characteristics in genetically proven patients of SCA 1, 2 and 3 are largely unknown.
METHODS: We prospectively compared the electrophysiological characteristics of neuropathy in 61 genetically confirmed cases of SCA (SCA1=28, SCA2=16 and SCA3=17). Nerve conduction studies were performed in at least one sensory and one motor nerve, in right upper and lower limb using standard methods.
RESULTS: The mean age of patients and duration of illness were comp

To assess the role of subdiaphragmatic vagal afferent and efferent fibers in the mediation of the inhibition of food intake by cholecystokinin (CCK), we compared the ability of a dose range (1-16 microg/kg), of CCK to affect 30-min liquid glucose (0.125 g/ml) intake in rats with either total subdiaphragmatic vagotomy, selective subdiaphragmatic vagal deafferentation, selective subdiaphragmatic vagal deefferentation, or sham surgery. Selective vagal deafferentation and deefferentations were produced by combinations of unilateral subdiaphragmatic vagotomy and contralateral afferent or efferent r

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used to identify parts of the presumptive neural pathway for gill cover erection, a behavioral display pattern performed by Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) during aggressive interactions. Motor, motor integration and sensory areas were identified in the medulla and mesencephalon. Motor neurons of the dilator operculi muscle, the effector muscle for gill cover erection, are located in the lateral and medial parts of the caudal trigeminal motor nucleus. Iontophoretic injections of HRP into the lateral trigeminal motor nucleus resulted in labeled cell bodi

This paper reviews existing hypotheses concerning the mechanisms of adaptation of the vestibular apparatus and related somatosensory systems to microgravity with reference to the flight data. Having in view theoretical concepts and experimental data accumulated in space flights, a conceptual model of the development of a funtional system responsible for the termination of vestibular dysfuntion and space motion sickness manifestations is presented. It is also shown that changes in the hormonal status during motion sickness induced by vestibular stimulation give evidence that endocrine regulatio

Saltwater-adapted ducks with functioning supraorbital salt glands were chronically implanted with a device for perfusion of the third cerebral ventricle (icv perfusion) with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of different tonicities. The osmoregulatory responses to icv stimulation were studied at conditions of salt and water loading in which only the salt glands, both salt glands and urinary fluid excretion, or only urinary fluid excretion were stimulated; in the latter experiments plasma antidiuretic hormone (ADH) was measured with a radioimmunoassay. Hypertonic icv stimulation enhanced sal

The gut microbiota, a complex community of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms, plays a critical role in regulating host physiology through the gut-brain axis. The gut microbiota interacts with the central nervous system through a range of interconnected pathways. These include humoral signaling, immune-related mechanisms, sensory afferent pathways, and the modulation of enteric neural circuits. Recent research has uncovered specialized epithelial sensory cells, like neuropod cells, that can directly detect microbial molecules and send signals via vagal afferents. This discovery…

INTRODUCTION: Neuromuscular control of the facial expressions is provided exclusively via the facial nerve. Facial muscles are amongst the most finely tuned effectors in the human motor system, which coordinate facial expressions. In lower vertebrates, the extracranial facial nerve is a mixed nerve, while in mammals it is believed to be a pure motor nerve. However, this established notion does not agree with several clinical signs in health and disease.
OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the facial nerve contribution to the facial muscles by investigating axonal composition of the human facial nerve. T

Activated mammalian target of rapamycin (P-mTOR) has been shown to maintain the sensitivity of subsets of small-diameter primary afferent A-nociceptors. Local or systemic inhibition of the mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) pathway reduced punctate mechanical and cold sensitivity in neuropathic pain and therefore offered a new approach to chronic pain control. In this study, we have investigated the effects of the rapamycin analog temsirolimus (CCI-779) on itch. Bouts of scratching induced by the histamine-dependent pruritogenic compound 48/80 and histamine-independent pruritogens, chloroquine and SLIGRL

In order to clarify the functional role of the isolectin B4 (IB4)-binding afferent pathway in the micturition reflex, we investigated the ef … ladder irritation without affecting normal micturition. Thus targeting IB4-binding, non-peptidergic afferent pathways sensitive to capsaicin and adenosine 5'-triphosphate may be an effective treatment for overactivity and/or pain responses in the bladder.

Sensory abnormalities have been reported in Parkinson's disease and may contribute to the motor deficits. Peripheral sensory stimulation inhibits the motor cortex, and the effects depend on the interstimulus interval (ISI) between the sensory stimulus and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the motor cortex. Short latency afferent inhibition (SAI) occurs at an ISI of approximately 20 ms, and long latency afferent inhibition (LAI) at an ISI of approximately 200 ms. We studied SAI and LAI in 10 Parkinson's disease patients with the aim of assessing whether sensorimotor processing is alter

Recently the development of the cyclophosphamide (CP, 100 mg/kg/i.p.) model has added an important element to the study of neural activities accompanying cystitis genesis. CP cystitis genesis results in the dual activation of the pelvic and vagal sensory afferent systems, which in turn activate a supraspinal network comprising the ventrocaudal bulbar reticular formation (vcBRF), the sensory subdivisions of the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) and its subcortical telencephalic targets, the dorsolateral subdivision of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTLd) and the nucleus centralis of the amy

The medial olivocochlear (MOC) system, which originates in the brainstem and projects to the outer hair cells in the cochlea, is thought to be involved in improving signal detection in noisy backgrounds. This proposition arises from the observation that the input-output functions of auditory primary afferent fibres to pure tones recorded in a continuous background noise are unmasked by MOC activation, improving the dynamic range, and is supported by both animal and human behavioural experiments. However, it is not known how the unmasking effects observed in the cochlea are translated into high
