Potential impact of alcohol calorie labelling on the attitudes and drinking behaviour of hazardous and low-risk drinkers in England: a national survey.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the hypothetical impact of mandatory alcohol calorie labelling, comparing non-drinkers, low-risk and hazardous drinkers in terms of attitudes, knowledge about calorie content and hypothetical behaviour changes should labelling be introduced. DESIGN: Cross-sectional national telephone survey. SETTING: Community-dwelling adults in England between November 2022 and January 2023. PARTICIPANTS: Data were collected from 4683 adults >18 years, of whom 24.7% were non-drinkers; 77.6% of alcohol drinkers were categorised as low-risk and 22.4% as hazardous drinkers accordin

The associations between self-consciousness, depressive state and craving to drink among alcohol dependent patients undergoing protracted withdrawal.

CONTEXT: In order to understand how certain personality traits influence the relation between depression symptoms and craving for alcohol, trait self-consciousness (trait SC) was examined during a withdrawal and detoxification program. METHODS: Craving (Obsessive and Compulsive Drinking Scale), depressive state (Beck Depression Inventory) and trait SC (Revised Self-Consciousness Scale) were assessed in alcohol-dependent inpatients (DSM-IV, N = 30) both at the beginning (T1: day 1 or 2) and at the end (T2: day 14 to18) of protracted withdrawal during rehabilitation. RESULTS: A significant dec

Genetic polymorphisms of alcohol and aldehyde dehydrogenases, and drinking, smoking and diet in Japanese men with oral and pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

The genetic polymorphisms of aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2), alcohol dehydrogenase-1B (ADH1B, previously called ADH2), and ADH1C (previously called ADH3) affect the metabolism of alcohol. The inactive ALDH2 encoded by ALDH2*1/*2 and the less-active ADH1B encoded by ADH1B*1/*1 increase the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in East Asian drinkers. This case-control study involved 96 Japanese men with oral and pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (hypopharyngeal cancer in 43 patients and oral/oropharyngeal cancer in 53) and 642 cancer-free Japanese men. The risk of the cancers overall an

Independent and combined effects of tobacco smoking, chewing and alcohol drinking on the risk of oral, pharyngeal and esophageal cancers in Indian men.

Oral, pharyngeal and esophageal cancers are 3 of the 5 most common cancer sites in Indian men. To assess the effect of different patterns of smoking, chewing and alcohol drinking in the development of the above 3 neoplasms and to determine the interaction among these habits, we conducted a case-control study in Chennai and Trivandrum, South India. The cases included 1,563 oral, 636 pharyngeal and 566 esophageal male cancer patients who were compared with 1,711 male disease controls from the 2 centers as well as 1,927 male healthy hospital visitors from Chennai. We observed a significant dose-r…

Association of Anticipated Stimulant and Sedative Effects of Alcohol With Future Heavy Drinking in a Large Swiss Cohort Study of Young Men.

OBJECTIVE: Theories posit that acute alcohol responses predict the development of future heavy alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. The most prominent of these theories is the low-level response theory, which purports that less intense alcohol responses are associated with later development of alcohol use disorder. The counter-modified differentiator model posits that greater stimulant effects with lower sedative effects predict future heavy drinking. The present study provided a concurrent testing of these theories in a large-scale cohort of young adult Swiss men. METHOD: Data were deri

Contraceptive use among married women who drink alcohol in India: a cross-sectional analysis of NFHS-5 survey.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption among women of reproductive age is a growing concern in India, with significant implications for reproductive health. Despite evidence linking alcohol use to suboptimal contraceptive behaviors, research on the patterns and determinants of contraceptive use remains limited. METHODS: Data from 6626 married women aged 15-49 years who reported alcohol consumption and 468 142 who did not were drawn from the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-2021). Contraceptive use was classified by the World Health Organization's effectiveness levels. Alcohol consumption was ex

Self-compassion buffers the internalized alcohol stigma and depression link in women sexual assault survivors who drink to cope.

BACKGROUND: Depression is strongly implicated in drinking to cope and the development of alcohol use disorders (AUD) in women, particularly among women with a history of sexual assault victimization (SAV). Alcohol use in women is heavily stigmatized, and substance use stigma is associated with depression. This study examined the link between internalized alcohol stigma (AS) and depression and tested whether self-compassion buffered (i.e., moderated) this association in a sample of women with a history of SAV and unhealthy drinking to cope. METHOD: Women sexual assault survivors (N = 288; 82 %

Sex and context differences in the effects of trauma on comorbid alcohol use and post-traumatic stress phenotypes in actively drinking rats.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and affective disorders are frequently comorbid and share underlying mechanisms that could be targets for comprehensive treatment. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has high comorbidity with AUD, but comprehensive models of this overlap are nascent. We recently characterized a model of comorbid AUD and PTSD-like symptoms, wherein stressed rats receive an inhibitory avoidance (IA)-related footshock on two occasions followed by two-bottle choice (2BC) voluntary alcohol drinking. Stressed rats received the second footshock in a familiar (FAM, same IA box as the firs…

Differential effects of alcohol-drinking patterns on the structure and function of the brain and cognitive performance in young adult drinkers: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: This study was aimed to determine how different patterns of alcohol consumption drive changes to brain structure and function and their correlation with cognitive impairments in young adult alcohol drinkers. METHODS: In this study, we enrolled five groups participants and defined as: long-term abstinence from alcohol (LA), binge drinking (BD), long-term low dosage alcohol consumption but exceeding the safety drinking dosage (LD), long-term alcohol consumption of damaging dosage (LDD), and long-term heavy drinking (HD). All participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Early life stress is a risk factor for excessive alcohol drinking and impulsivity in adults and is mediated via a CRF/GABA(A) mechanism.

Childhood stress and trauma are associated with substance use disorders in adulthood, but the neurological changes that confer increased vul … 3-PBC at each site markedly reduced impulsivity and produced profound reductions on binge-motivated alcohol drinking, without altering responding for sucrose. Furthermore, whole-cell patch-clamp studies showed that low concentrations of 3-PBC directly reversed the effect of relatively high concentrations of ethanol on α2β3γ2 GABA(A) receptors, by a benzodiazepine …

Maternal alcohol binge-drinking in the first trimester and the risk of orofacial clefts in offspring: a large population-based pooling study.

Using individual participant data from six population-based case-control studies, we conducted pooled analyses to examine maternal alcohol consumption and the risk of clefts among >4600 infants with cleft lip only, cleft lip with cleft palate, or cleft palate only and >10,000 unaffected controls. We examined two first-trimester alcohol measures: average number of drinks/sitting and maximum number of drinks/sitting, with five studies contributing to each analysis. Study-specific odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using logistic regression and pooled to generate adjusted summary ORs. Across studie

Drinking patterns and their predictive factors in CONTROL: a 12-month prospective study in a sample of alcohol-dependent patients initiating treatment.

AIMS: To describe the drinking patterns and their baseline predictive factors during a 12-month period after an initial evaluation for alcohol treatment. METHODS: CONTROL is a single-center, prospective, observational study evaluating consecutive alcohol-dependent patients. Using a curve clustering methodology based on a polynomial regression mixture model, we identified three clusters of patients with dominant alcohol use patterns described as mostly abstainers, mostly moderate drinkers and mostly heavy drinkers. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to identify baseline factors

I. Veterans Affairs Cooperative Study of polyenylphosphatidylcholine in alcoholic liver disease: effects on drinking behavior by nurse/physician teams.

BACKGROUND: This multicenter prospective, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of polyenylphosphatidylcholine against the progression of liver fibrosis toward cirrhosis in alcoholics. Seven hundred eighty-nine alcoholics with an average intake of 16 drinks per day were enrolled. To control excessive drinking, patients were referred to a standard 12-step-based alcoholism treatment program, but most patients refused to attend. Accordingly, study follow-up procedures incorporated the essential features of the brief-intervention approach. An

Differential drinking patterns, personality characteristics, and field articulation of court-referred and non-court-referred male alcoholics in treatment.

Male alcoholics in an inpatient rehabilitation program were selected to investigate differential characteristics of court-referred patients on measures of personality, drinking style, demograhics, and cognitive style. Seventy-eight males were separated into two groups based upon the demographic dimension of whether or not the patient was in treatment primarily as a result of legal pressures imposed due to alcohol-related motor vehicle violation (N = 23) or in treatment for a variety of personal/nonlegal reasons (N = 57). All subjects were administered the Clinical Analysis Questionnaire (CAQ),

When weight-loss drugs reduce drinking: glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists as phenotype-enriched harm-reduction therapy for alcohol use disorder.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have attracted interest as potential treatments for alcohol use disorder (AUD) after patients receiving these agents for obesity or type 2 diabetes reported a reduced desire to drink. This editorial examines whether current evidence supports their classification as broadly applicable addiction treatments or as phenotype-enriched therapies. Randomized trials evaluating exenatide and semaglutide suggest a clinically relevant but endpoint-selective signal. Reductions have been most consistent in heavy-drinking days, drinks per drinking day, na

Ibudilast attenuates the association between pain intensity and heavy drinking in alcohol use disorder: A secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Pain frequently co-occurs with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and may influence treatment response. In this secondary analysis of a completed randomized clinical trial, we examined whether baseline pain intensity and pain-related disability moderate the effects of ibudilast, a neuroimmune-modulating agent, on drinking outcomes over 12 weeks. METHOD: Participants (N = 102; 60 % male; M age = 44.26, SD = 10.81) with moderate-to-severe AUD were randomized to ibudilast (50 mg twice daily) or placebo for 12 weeks. Pain intensity and disability were assessed at baseline using the Graded Chr

Physiologically decreased F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in the lower vertebrae associated with daily drinking habit in Japanese men with alcohol flushing reaction.

Alcohol flushing reaction (AFR) is known as one of the risks for esophageal squamous cell cancer, and scientists have been elucidating this issue. However, little attention has been given to relevant imaging features. This study aims to investigate whether physiological 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake patterns in vertebrae are associated with drinking habits or AFR. Japanese male patients who underwent FDG positron emission computed tomography for evaluation of their known or suspected malignancies or inflammatory diseases were asked about their drinking habits and AFR. Altogether, 192 pat
