Growth, function and homology: aspects of dental replacement in toothcombed strepsirhines.

In maturing juvenile lemurs and lorises, it was found that the anteriormost lower deciduous premolar migrates forward and may become associated with the teeth of the toothcomb; this is similar to previous observations on the dentition of indriines. The mesial shift of dp2 appears to be associated with the eruption of P2 but, more importantly, also with replacement of the deciduous by the permanent teeth of the toothcomb--which is a period of functional disruption at the front of the jaw. It is suggested that this growth-related phenomenon should not be confused with other aspects of dental dev

Detected trematodes inside blue-winged teals (Spatula discors) give insights on north-south flow of parasites through Cuba during migration.

The Blue-winged Teal (Spatula discors) is known for engaging in long-distance North-South migrations and back in the Americas with Cuba being an important wintering ground. Teals serve as hosts for a wide range of parasite species that can be "discharged" at each end of the migration route. Here, we explore for the first time the diversity of trematodes that the Blue-winged Teal may be introducing to -or exporting from- Cuba. We found 15 digenean parasites in 65 sampled teals of which 13 represent first reports for Cuba with one species (Echinostoma revolutum) of zoonotic importance. Overall p

Therapeutic effect of BDNF-overexpressing human neural stem cells (HB1.F3.BDNF) in a rodent model of middle cerebral artery occlusion.

Ischemic stroke mainly caused by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) represents the major type of stroke; however, there are still very limited therapeutic options for the stroke-damaged patients. In this study, we evaluated the neurogenic and therapeutic potentials of human neural stem cells (NSCs) overexpressing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (HB1.F3.BDNF) following transplantation into a rodent model of MCAo. F3.BDNF human NSCs (F3.BDNF) were transplanted into the contralateral side of striatum at 7 days after MCAo, and the transplanted animals were monitored up to 8 weeks using anim

Female "dispersal" in hamadryas baboons: transfer among social units in a multilevel society.

Unlike most cercopithecines, hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) are characterized by female-biased dispersal. To clarify this pattern within the context of their hierarchical social system (comprising one-male units, clans, bands, and troops), we report here 7 years of data on female transfers among social units in wild hamadryas baboons in Ethiopia. Female tenure in one-male units (OMUs) ranged from 1 to 2,556 days (N = 208) and survival analysis revealed a median tenure length of 1,217 days (40 months). Changes in OMU membership consisted almost exclusively of takeovers by males,

West Nile virus monitoring of migratory and resident birds in Germany.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus naturally circulating in wild bird populations. The virus is also capable to infect a broad range of vertebrate species. Humans and equines are highly susceptible and can develop mild flu-like illnesses as well as severe encephalitis leading to fatalities. Most recently, WNV was found to circulate in countries close to Germany, such as France, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, and Hungary. Given this epidemiological situation its spread to Germany cannot be ruled out. As no data on the WNV situation were available for Germany for the most rece

An annotated checklist of pathogenic microorganisms associated with migratory birds.

The potential for transport and dissemination of certain pathogenic microorganisms by migratory birds is of concern. Migratory birds might be involved in dispersal of microorganisms as their biological carriers, mechanical carriers, or as carriers of infected hematophagous ecto-parasites (e.g., ixodid ticks). Many species of microorganisms pathogenic to homeothermic vertebrates including humans have been associated with free-living migratory birds. Migratory birds of diverse species can play significant roles in the ecology and circulation of some arboviruses (e.g., eastern and western equine

Morita-Baylis-Hillman Adduct 2-(3-Hydroxy-2-oxoindolin-3-yl)acrylonitrile (ISACN) Modulates Inflammatory Process In vitro and In vivo.

Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts (MBHA) are synthetic molecules with several biological actions already described in the literature. It has been previously described that adduct 2-(3-hydroxy-2-oxoindolin-3-yl)acrylonitrile (ISACN) has anticancer potential in leukemic cells. Inflammation is often associated with the development and progression of cancer. Therefore, to better understand the effect of ISACN, this study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of ISACN both in vitro and in vivo. Results demonstrated that ISACN negatively modulated the production of inflammatory cytokines IL-

Pathophysiological analyses of leptomeningeal heterotopia using gyrencephalic mammals.

Leptomeningeal glioneuronal heterotopia (LGH) is a focal malformation of the cerebral cortex and frequently found in patients with thanatophoric dysplasia (TD). The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying LGH formation are still largely unclear because of difficulties in obtaining brain samples from human TD patients. Recently, we established a new animal model for analysing cortical malformations of human TD by utilizing our genetic manipulation technique for gyrencephalic carnivore ferrets. Here we investigated the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the formation of LGH using our TD f

Neural progenitor cells transplanted into the uninjured brain undergo targeted migration after stroke onset.

Endogenous neural stem cells normally reside in their niche, the subventricular zone, in the uninjured rodent brain. Upon stroke, these cells become more proliferative and migrate away from the subventricular zone into the surrounding parenchyma. It is not known whether this stroke-induced behavior is due to changes in the niche or introduction of attractive cues in the infarct zone, or both. A related question is how transplanted neural stem cells respond to subsequent insults, including whether exogenous stem cells have the plasticity to respond to subsequent injuries after engraftment. We a

Detection of 111In-oxine-labeled bone marrow stromal cells after intravenous or intralesional administration in chronic paraplegic rats.

Recent studies suggested that bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) may have a therapeutic role in the treatment of paraplegia secondary to severe spinal cord injury (SCI). For this reason, we have studied the possibility of using nuclear medicine imaging techniques to evaluate the permanency and migration of BMSC after transplantation procedures in chronic paraplegic Wistar rats. After intravenous administration of 111In-oxine-labeled BMSC, gammagraphic images showed that the activity distributed all over the organism, but in the spinal cord only scarce activity was identified. When 111In-oxine-la

Cell migration from the transplanted olfactory placode in Xenopus.

The eye vesicle of Xenopus borealis has been replaced with the transplanted olfactory primordium from Xenopus laevis in an attempt to determine whether cells from the transplant could migrate along the regrowing olfactory nerve and become incorporated into the CNS of the host. The use of X. laevis and X. borealis pairs allowed us to distinguish the cells of the host from those of the donor at the cellular level by means of the characteristic fluorescent nuclear spots (Q bands) of X. borealis. Transplantation was performed on pairs of animals at stages 23/24. The olfactory anlage was readily in

Small bowel myoelectric activity in peritonitis.

Peritonitis is associated clinically with paralytic ileus, but the physiologic mechanisms of the effects of peritonitis on bowel myoelectric activity have not been explored. Bipolar electrodes were inserted into the rats, and myoelectric control recordings were obtained for 4 h/d for 5 consecutive days. Peritonitis was then induced, and myoelectric recordings were again obtained. Each animal served as its own control. Prior to induction of peritonitis (control), phase I, II, and III myoelectric activity was present in all recordings. The cycle duration of the migrating myoelectric complex was

Cell-mediated immunity in experimental syphilis in rabbits.

The development of cell-mediated immunity was studied in rabbits: a) experimentally injected with T. pallidum, and b) artificially immunized with nonviable T. pallidum. The macrophage migration inhibition test (MMI test) using ultrasonicate of T. pallidum as antigen was employed to demonstrate this type of immunologic response. Lymphocytes of syphilitic rabbits were found to exert a pronounced inhibitory effect upon macrophage migration as early as one month after infection; between the fourth and sixth month, a transient decrease of this capacity occurred, followed by a slow but steady increa

Intestinal anaphylaxis in the rat. Effect of chronic antigen exposure.

The effect of chronic dietary antigen challenge on the intestine was examined in sensitized rats. Three groups of Hooded-Lister rats were studied: animals sensitized to egg albumin; sham-sensitized animals; and unmanipulated controls. In sensitized rats, serum immunoglobulin E titers to egg albumin were greater than or equal to 1:64, whereas control and pair-fed rats showed no response. Sensitized rats received egg albumin 1 mg/ml in drinking water and rat chow ad libitum. Pair-fed animals also received egg albumin but were pair-fed with sensitized animals. Controls received water and rat chow

Unusual Mass Mortality of Atlantic Puffins (Fratercula arctica) in the Canary Islands Associated with Adverse Weather Events.

The Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica) is a seabird species characterized by great diving capabilities and transoceanic migratory behavior. These movements contribute to the dispersion of the species during migration, and episodes of mortality associated with migration may be a normal event in the dynamic of the Atlantic puffin populations. This study aimed to describe the anatomopathological findings of an unusual mortality event of Atlantic puffins observed during the non-breeding period along the coast of the Canary Islands. The most consistent gross finding during necropsy was generalize

Fgf signaling governs cell fate in the zebrafish pineal complex.

Left-right (L-R) asymmetries in neuroanatomy exist throughout the animal kingdom, with implications for function and behavior. The molecular mechanisms that control formation of such asymmetries are beginning to be understood. Significant progress has been made by studying the zebrafish parapineal organ, a group of neurons on the left side of the epithalamus. Parapineal cells arise from the medially located pineal complex anlage and migrate to the left side of the brain. We have found that Fgf8a regulates a fate decision among anterior pineal complex progenitors that occurs just prior to the i

Portal shunting and resistance to Schistosoma mansoni in 129 strain mice.

The integrity of the hepatic portal vasculature was examined, relative to the resistance to Schistosoma mansoni observed in 68% of 129/Ola mice. The passage of microspheres to the lungs, following their injection via the superior mesenteric vein, indicated the presence of shunts in the majority of both naive and infected mice. There was a negative association between shunting of microspheres to the lungs and paucity of liver worms at 28/35 days post-infection. Schistosomula accumulated in the livers of resistant mice at a slower rate than in susceptible animals, and after day 21 relocated to t

Effects of chronic sympathetic stimulation on corneal wound healing.

To explore the possibility that adrenergic fibers influence epithelial wound healing in the rabbit cornea, chronic electrodes were implanted in the left cervical sympathetic nerve, and symmetrical wounds were produced on the corneal epithelium of both eyes by means of n-heptanol. Continuous sympathetic stimulation was applied to awake, unrestrained animals during the wound-healing process (2-3 days) by use of a portable stimulator that delivered 1 ms, 3-Hz electric pulses at an amplitude necessary to evoke mydriasis. Migration rates of epithelial cells surrounding the wound and estimated wound

Life cycle and development of Lagochilascaris sprenti (Nematoda: ascarididae) from opossums (Marsupialia: didelphidae) in Louisiana.

The life cycle of Lagochilascaris sprenti, a species which occurs in the stomach of opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in Louisiana, was determined. The larva in the egg developed to the infective stage after eggs from the feces of infected animals were in culture about 30 days. When eggs containing infective larvae were fed to mice, the larvae hatched, penetrated the intestinal mucosa, migrated through the liver and lungs, and eventually reached the skeletal muscles where they became encapsulated. Larvae were also found encapsulated in the skeletal muscles of rats, gerbils, hamsters, monkeys, an
