High proximal pouch esophageal atresia with vertebral, rib, and sternal anomalies: an additional component to the VATER association.

The base of the proximal esophageal pouch in babies born with esophageal atresia varies in location from the low cervical region to the upper third of the mediastinum, but the relevance of this finding to the VATER association is not known. The initial radiographs and hospital records of 42 newborns with esophageal atresia and a distal tracheoesophageal fistula treated in the Newborn Special Care Unit of the Yale-New Haven Hospital between 1977 and 1986 were examined to (1) determine the location of the base of the upper esophageal pouch on its superimposed vertebral body; (2) identify coexist

Malformations in rat fetuses induced by trypan blue.

Malformations of fetuses obtained from Wistar rat dams treated with trypan blue during gestation were studied. Fetuses were examined on day 20 of gestation. One hundred and twenty-seven fetuses showed abnormalities of the external features, skeleton and internal organs, separately or in combination. External malformations were found in 108 fetuses. The most frequent external malformation was anomaly of tail. Spina bifida, club foot, exencephaly and anal atresia were also observed frequently. Skeletal malformations were detected in 48 fetuses. Deformity of vertebrae in the lumbar, sacral and/or

[Initial diagnosis of anorectal malformations].

An essential prerequisite for the correct surgical approach of the congenital anorectal anomalies is a precise diagnostic work-up demonstrating the level of the atresia and the nature of possibly associated anomalies. To be acquainted with basic embryology allows a better understanding of this pathology. In this study the value of clinical and radiological parameters has been analysed in sixty cases. An accurate diagnosis was established in one half of the patients only by clinical examination. In the other half, the X-ray with the child inverted according to Wangensteen and Rice proved to be

[Macroscopical observations on a human anencephalous fetus with multiple malformations (author's transl)].

The present report treats a female stillborn human anencephalous fetus with the craniorrhachischisis, cleft palate, left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia, hypoplasia of lungs, imperforate vagina and anus, absent left kidney and sternal muscle on the left side. In view of the rarity of the records of autopsied cases of anencephaly, authors made efforts to obtain informations on how all the organs in this fetus and their topographical relation in each other are affected by the anencephaly. The findings are summarized as follows. 1) This case falls under Anencephalus craniorrhachischisis in

A practical method for prenatal diagnosis of anal atresia by second trimester ultrasound screening - A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to demonstrate the performance of anal atresia ultrasound screening in the second trimester and to describe associated experiences in a primary care fetal medicine clinic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of fetuses who underwent a second-trimester screening at the Taiji clinic between November 2019 and May 2022. Fisher's exact test was conducted to investigate potential risk factors. RESULTS: There were 28 459 fetuses screened in our clinic during the study period; eventually, 6 cases were diagnosed with anal atresia after bi

Maternal drug use and the risk of anorectal malformations: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Origin of anorectal malformations (ARM) are considered multifactorial. Several genetic and non-genetic risk factors are discussed in literature. Maternal periconceptional medical drug use as possible risk factor, however, has not been reviewed systematically. METHODS: Studies published between 1977 and April 2017 were reviewed through systematic search in PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge and Scopus databases. Furthermore, related and cross-referencing publications were reviewed. Pooled odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) were determined to quantify associations of maternal periconc

Survey on the management of anorectal malformations (ARM) in European pediatric surgical centers of excellence.

PURPOSE: Various management strategies for anorectal malformations (ARM) have been proposed. The aim of this study was to assess the current management in centers of excellence in Europe. METHODS: An online survey on the pre- and post-operative concepts, surgical techniques, and the management of complications was sent to the representative experts of 28 selected European centers of pediatric surgery with special expertise in the treatment of ARM. RESULTS: The survey was completed by 25 experts from 14 countries. To assess the level of the rectal pouch in newborns 60% of participants perform

Ectodermal Defects and Anal Atresia in a Child with a TP63 Mutation--Expanding the Phenotypic Spectrum.

Ectodermal dysplasias caused by mutations in the TP63 gene comprise a group of disorders characterized by a spectrum of ectodermal changes, orofacial clefting, and split hand or foot malformation. We report on a boy with a mutation located in the DNA-binding domain of the TP63 gene with atypical phenotype. These data provide additional evidence of the great variability seen in TP63-related disorders and further delineation of genotype-phenotype correlations.

Scrotal pearl is not always a sign of anorectal malformation: median raphe cyst.

Pearls of meconium can be seen on the raphe of the scrotum and are considered as a sign of anorectal malformation (ARM). Scrotal pearls without ARM are rare in children and designated as median raphe cyst of the scrotum (MRC). A six-month-old boy with scrotal pearls without ARM is presented to discuss the clinical features and treatment modalities of MRC in infants.

Alveolar capillary dysplasia with anorectal anomaly.

Alveolar capillary dysplasia (ACD) is an uncommon cause of irreversible persistent pulmonary hypertension in full-term newborn. In ACD there is a failure of formation of air - blood barrier in addition to misalignment of pulmonary veins. The etiology of the disease is still not understood. We present a case report of a full-term newborn with ACD associated with anorectal anomaly.
