There is ample evidence that individuals with dyslexia have a phonological deficit. A growing body of research also suggests that individuals with dyslexia have problems with categorical perception, as evidenced by weaker discrimination of between-category differences and better discrimination of within-category differences compared to average readers. Whether the categorical perception problems of individuals with dyslexia are a result of their reading problems or a cause has yet to be determined. Whether the observed perception deficit relates to a more general auditory deficit or is specifi

Ultrasound imaging was used to investigate the articulation of the voiceless velar stop [k] in five speakers with compensatory articulation related to cleft palate. The perceptual evaluation of the acoustic realization and the visual assessment of the tongue movement for the target sound were made by three examiners. The analysis revealed a variety of different compensatory strategies that included glottal stops, pharyngeal stops, midpalatal stops and glottal and velar co-productions. One patient produced palatal click sounds together with a midpalatal stop. The ultrasound imaging also reveale

This study examined the role of speech perception training in the correction of phonological errors. Twenty-seven preschoolers with phonological impairment who misarticulated /integral of/ were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Group 1 children listened to a variety of correctly and incorrectly produced versions of the word "shoe"; Group 2 children listened to the words "shoe" and "moo"; Group 3 children listened to the words "cat" and "Pete." A computer game was used to provide reinforcement for correct identification of the words. All children received the same traditional sound prod

Phonatory dysfunction is a frequent component of dysarthria and often is a primary feature noted in clinical assessment. But the vocal impairment can be difficult to assess because (a). the analysis of voice disorder of any kind can be challenging, and (b). the voice disorder in dysarthria often occurs along with other impairments affecting articulation, resonance, and respiration. A promising assessment tool is multi-parameter acoustic analysis, such as the Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP). Part 1 of this paper recommends procedures and standards for the acoustic analysis of voice, incl

It has been reported in alphabetic languages that individuals with schizophrenia showed language-related cognitive impairments including phonological deficits, which were in turn associated with clinical symptoms such as auditory hallucinations and thought disorders. To date, however, the phonological deficits involved in schizophrenia in Chinese and its neural basis have not been well established. In order to establish such a relationship we conducted a behavioral study using lexical tone judgment and digit span tasks as well as an event-related potential (ERP) study with an auditory oddball

BACKGROUND: There are no published data on typical phonological development for Singaporean children. There is therefore the risk that children's speech in Singapore may be misdiagnosed or that clinicians may set goals erroneously.
AIMS: This paper reports a preliminary study on the English phonology of typically developing 4;0-4;5-year-old Chinese Singaporean children who speak English and Mandarin.
METHOD & PROCEDURES: Seventy children were recruited throughout Singapore, and speech samples were collected in English using the Phonology Assessment of the Diagnostic Evaluation of Articulatio

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we investigated the impact of chronic nasal obstruction on articulation of the Turkish voiceless plosive (stop) consonants and examined the effect of the nose- and mouth-breathing on the articulatory characteristics of the specific speech sounds.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one controls with nose-breathing and 20 patients with mouth breathing were included in this study. The nasal obstruction history of the patients was 10 to 22 years. In the mouth-breather group, intranasal pathologies except septal deviation and turbinate hypertrophy were excluded. The nose-breat

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and extent of variability in tongue movement during healthy swallowing as a function of aging and gender. In addition, changes were quantified in healthy tongue movements in response to specific differences in the nature of the swallowing task (discrete vs. sequential swallows).
METHOD: Electromagnetic midsagittal articulography (EMMA) was used to study the swallowing-related movements of markers located in midline on the anterior (blade), middle (body), and posterior (dorsum) tongue in a sample of 34 healthy adults in 2 age groups

PURPOSE: Speech of deaf persons differs considerably from that of speakers with normal hearing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acoustic changes in articulation of corner vowels in deaf children and adults after cochlear implantation.
METHODS: Thirteen prelingually deaf children and 12 postlingually deaf adults were included in the study. Voice samples of the isolated corner vowels /a/, /i/ and /u/ were analyzed before and 6-12 months after the implantation. The frequencies of the first (F1) and second (F2) formants, the F1/F2 ratio of all three corner vowels, and the area of

OBJECTIVE: A well-known problem in primary surgery of the soft palate is its shortness and the deficit of local soft tissue. This article introduces a modification of the primary intravelar veloplasty, allowing lengthening of the soft palate, and compares this alternative technique to the classic intravelar veloplasty.
METHOD: The soft palate wave-line technique adds a wavy incision at the velar cleft margins to the intravelar veloplasty. In 24 patients with complete clefts of the palate, either the newly developed or classic technique was performed. Four years following primary surgery, spee

Four adolescents with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing losses and moderately unintelligible speech participated in a 14-week speech therapy study using two dynamic visual feedback technologies, electropalatography and ultrasound imaging. Electropalatography provides information about tongue-hard palate contact points. Ultrasound displays images of tongue shape and movement in two dimensions from the tip to the root. Treatment targets for all participants included a sibilant place contrast (/s/ versus /[symbol: see text]/), liquids /l/ and /[symbol: see text]/, and the tense-lax vowel c

This study investigated the methods of assessment and intervention used by speech-language therapists (SLTs) in the Western Cape when working with children with speech difficulties. Children with speech difficulties are likely to form a considerable part of SLT caseloads in South Africa, but assessment choice may not be clear-cut given the linguistic diversity of the region and that few assessments have been developed specifically for the SA population. Selection of intervention approaches may also pose difficulties, linked to the lack of assessments and the limited evidence base in our contex

The influence of an open residual cleft in the hard palate on speech was studied in nine children with cleft lip and palate at about 7 years of age. The subjects were treated by early repair of the velum (before 12 months of age), whereas the repair of the cleft in the hard palate was postponed until about 8 years of age. Speech and velopharyngeal function were assessed systematically with the residual cleft open and temporarily covered with an oral bandage. Listeners' judgments, the Nasal Oral RAtio Meter (NORAM), videofluoroscopy, and cephalometrics were used for the analyses. Four patients

Selection of patients for orthodontic treatment should be based on a thorough analysis of the consequences of malocclusions for the individual. The mere presence of deviations from the concept of the ideal occlusion should have no influence on orthodontic treatment decisions. According to available studies, the influence of malocclusion on periodontal health, speech and chewing is fairly minor. Neither can orthodontic treatment be justified as an effective means of preventing TMD but it may be indicated to reduce existing signs and symptoms of TMD in certain carefully selected cases. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the preferred treatment for patients with hip joint disorders refractory to conservative management. While original implants were designed to articulate a metallic femoral head onto a polyethylene liner, the popularity of "metal-on-metal" (MoM) hip implants surged in the early 21st century due to their perceived superior long-term durability and lower revision rates. However, subsequent follow-up studies showed high failure rates due to inflammatory responses to periprosthetic metallic debris leading to lymphocytic proliferation, soft tissue necrosis or fibrosis

This article demonstrates the contribution of Otto Kernberg's object relations theory of personality pathology to the current understanding of the nature and assessment of personality pathology and diagnosis. The article introduces recent advances in psychiatric nosology and presents differing views on the meaning of the general severity criterion common to all personality pathology (i.e., level of personality functioning as described in criterion A of the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders). Next, the significance of Kernberg's theory to recent nosological advances is discussed

Methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) plays fundamental roles in the nervous system, as both gain-of-function and loss-of-function of MECP2 are associated with severe neurological conditions. Understanding the molecular function of MeCP2 will not only provide insights into the pathogenesis of MeCP2-related disorders, but will also shed light on the epigenetic regulation of neuronal function. In the past few years, a number of studies have provided mechanistic evidence that MeCP2 recruits co-repressor complexes to particular sequences of methylated DNA. Additionally, innovative design and high-t
