"I Speak Up for Myself, My Family, and for My Community": How Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders Respond to Anti-Asian Racism During COVID-19.

This qualitative study explored how Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) responded to anti-Asian racism during COVID-19. Participants (n = 459; Mage = 26.4 years; 77.8% female) completed a survey and responded to the open-ended question: "How have you responded to anti-Asian racism since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic?" Reflective thematic analysis was utilized to code responses. Three themes were identified, indicating that AANHPIs engaged in knowledge sharing and cultural exploration; experienced emotional reactions that galvanized efforts to take care o…

The product of waist-to-height ratio and glycated hemoglobin, a novel predictor of diabetes in East Asian populations: insights from two large East Asian cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: The global incidence of diabetes is increasing annually, with a notable rise in East Asia. This study aimed to develop a novel clinical indicator for predicting the onset of diabetes, based on two longitudinal East Asian cohorts. The clinical utility of the proposed indicator was evaluated by comparing its predictive performance against established metabolic markers. METHODS: A total of 14,468 participants from the NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) in the Gifu Area Longitudinal Analysis (NAGALA) cohort and 8,977 from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHAR…

Osilodrostat treatment in patients with Cushing's disease of Asian or non-Asian origin: a pooled analysis of two Phase III randomized trials (LINC 3 and LINC 4).

Cushing's disease is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Osilodrostat, a potent oral 11β-hydroxylase inhibitor, provided rapid, sustained mean urinary free cortisol (mUFC) normalization in Cushing's disease patients in two Phase III studies (LINC 3, NCT02180217; LINC 4, NCT02697734). Here, we evaluate the efficacy and safety of osilodrostat in Cushing's disease in patients of Asian origin compared with patients of non-Asian origin. Pooled data from LINC 3 and LINC 4 were analyzed. Outcomes were evaluated separately for Asian and non-Asian patients. For the analysis, 210 patients…

Glycaemic responses in Asian and non-Asian people with type 2 diabetes initiating insulin glargine 100 units/mL: A patient-level pooled analysis of 16 randomised controlled trials.

AIMS: To compare outcomes between Asian and non-Asian patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) inadequately controlled on oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) initiating insulin glargine 100 units (U)/mL (Gla-100) in randomised controlled clinical trials. METHODS: Post hoc analysis of patient-level data (Asian n = 235; non-Asian n = 3351) from 16 trials. RESULTS: At baseline, Asian patients were younger with lower body mass index (BMI), fasting C-peptide, and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) than non-Asian patients (all P < .001). Asian patients had a higher mean glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) at Week 24…

The South Asian Healthy Lifestyle Intervention (SAHELI) trial: Protocol for a mixed-methods, hybrid effectiveness implementation trial for reducing cardiovascular risk in South Asians in the United States.

Intensive lifestyle interventions targeting diet and physical activity are recommended for reducing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk in adults. However, existing interventions often do not reach immigrant populations because of a mismatch between the social, cultural, and environmental context of immigrants and Western bio behavioral models which underpin evidence-based lifestyle interventions. The South Asian Healthy Lifestyle Intervention (SAHELI) study is a type 1 hybrid design randomized controlled trial aimed at reducing ASCVD risk in South Asian Americans, a group at h…

Discovery of functional variants regulating lipid metabolism in an East Asian population.

BACKGROUND: Recent genome-wide association studies have identified more than 900 lipid-related loci; however, the specific genes and mechanisms that regulate blood lipid levels remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to identify lipid-associated variants in Koreans and to investigate their potential functional and regulatory mechanisms. METHODS: We performed a genome-wide association study of triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in 72,298 Korean participants. Genotype data were imputed using the Northeast Asian Reference D…

Colorectal Cancer Outcomes Among Disaggregated Asian Subgroups: a 2006-2020 SEER Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite varying colorectal cancer (CRC) outcomes across distinct Asian American subgroups, Asian individuals are often assessed in aggregate. We performed disaggregated analyses to assess for heterogeneity in CRC outcomes across the six largest Asian origin groups in the United States. METHODS: We identified adults with a primary diagnosis of CRC using surveillance, epidemiology, and end results (SEER) registry data from 2006 to 2020. Individuals from the six largest Asian origin groups and a referent non-Hispanic White (NHW) group were included. We identified predictors for regio…

Dietary exposure to thallium from various species of Asian wild edible mushrooms.

The health risk from thallium (Tl) exposure through the consumption of edible wild mushrooms was investigated. Eight popular wild Asian species were determined for Tl content in raw and stir-fried composite samples, using validated analytical methods and measurement by ICP-MS. Wet weight thallium concentrations, ranged from 2.5 μg·kg-1 in stir-fried Butyriboletus roseoflavus and Scleroderma yunnanense to 20.0 μg·kg-1 in Termitomyces eurrhizus (median and mean values were 2.7 and 7.9 μg·kg-1). Stir-frying resulted in Tl enrichment (+13 to +130%) compared to raw mushrooms because of biomass shri…

COVID-19 Racial Discrimination and Substance Use among Asian Americans by Gender.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic was accompanied by a surge in anti-Asian racial discrimination in the United States. To date, there has not been a study that examined the role of gender among Asian Americans (AAs) during the pandemic and its associations with racial discrimination and substance use. This study examined the relationship between COVID-19-related discrimination and substance use behaviors among AAs and investigated the moderating role of gender. METHODS: We used survey data from N = 1,052 AA Chinese, Filipino/a/x, and South Asian adults (Mage = 36.58, women = 69%) collected in…

Clinical obesity in Asian people: bridging the gap between adiposity and disease.

This Perspective argues for a reconceptualization of clinical obesity in Asian populations, moving beyond BMI-centric definitions towards an adiposity-based and function-based framework. Asian populations exhibit a distinctive obesity phenotype, characterized by excess visceral and ectopic adipose tissue accumulation, reduced β-cell reserve, sarcopenic obesity and heightened cardiometabolic risk at lower BMI thresholds than for white European and North American populations, leading to systematic under-recognition of obesity-related disease when conventional criteria are applied. Building on th…

Exploring the Relationship Between Racial Microaggressions and Substance Use in Asian Americans.

BACKGROUND: While racial microaggressions (behaviors and statements made toward a person with or without the intention of expressing prejudice) are associated with increased substance use among several racial groups, the relationship between racial microaggressions and substance use in Asian American adults is less defined. It is also unknown if ethnic identity strength (the quality of an individual's affiliation with their ethnic group) moderates any associations between racial microaggressions and substance use in Asian American adults. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of Engl…

Chloroplast Haplotype Analysis Reveals High Genetic Similarity Among Central Asian Prunus Species.

Genetic variation in four wild Prunus taxa (P. fruticosa, P. erythrocarpa, P. verrucosa and P. griffithii var. tianshanica) was investigated for the first time using six chloroplast DNA regions (matK, r rpl16, ycf1_1, ycf1_2, ndhF and trnH-psbA) analysed through CAPS-based SNP detection. The results revealed weak chloroplast differentiation among P. erythrocarpa, P. verrucosa and P. griffithii var. tianshanica. However, chloroplast variation exhibited a strong geographic signal across the studied populations. The observed chloroplast variation primarily reflected geographic structuring rather

State of the Science: Culturally Adapted Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Asian Americans.

Asian Americans are proportionately the fastest-growing racial group in the United States yet remain among the least likely to seek mental health services, often facing significant cultural and structural barriers. This state-of-the-science review synthesizes existing research on culturally adapted psychotherapy, with a focus on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for Asian American populations. Meta-analytic findings suggest that culturally adapted interventions, particularly those that utilize deep structural adaptations (e.g., those that incorporate cultural values, beliefs and worldviews), …

Theater-Based Program for Collective Healing Among Asian American Health Care Professionals.

IMPORTANCE: Research on the specific experiences of Asian American health care professionals and trainees, who face cultural dilemmas and stereotypes distinct from other minority groups, is limited. Few studies have evaluated interactive theater-based interventions for collective healing from racial trauma and for addressing cultural dilemmas, situations in which individuals navigate internalized stigma, interpersonal bias, and systemic exclusion within professional settings. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, and impacts of Acting Together, a webinar series using interact…
