Over the past century, generations of neuroscientists, pathologists, and clinicians have elucidated the underlying causes of autonomic failure found in neurodegenerative, inherited, and antibody-mediated autoimmune disorders, each with pathognomonic clinicopathologic features. Autonomic failure affects central autonomic nervous system components in the α-synucleinopathy, multiple system atrophy, characterized clinically by levodopa-unresponsive parkinsonism or cerebellar ataxia, and pathologically by argyrophilic glial cytoplasmic inclusions (GCIs). Two other central neurodegenerative disorder…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We explore the anatomy of the central and peripheral autonomic pathways involved in primary headache as well as the mechanisms for secondary headache associated with disorders of the autonomic nervous system. The prevalence and clinical presentation of cranial and systemic autonomic symptoms in these conditions will be discussed, with a focus on recent studies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Several small studies have utilized the relationship between headache and the autonomic nervous system to identify potential biomarkers to aid in diagnosis of migraine and cluster headache. Headache …

OBJECTIVES: To determine the degree of diagnostic and clinical similarity between chronic sympathetic nervous system disorders and migraine.
BACKGROUND: Migraine is an episodic syndrome consisting of a variety of clinical features that result from dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system. During headache-free periods, migraineurs have a reduction in sympathetic function compared to nonmigraineurs. Sympathetic nervous system dysfunction is also the major feature of rare neurological disorders such as pure autonomic failure and multiple system atrophy. There are no known reports in the med

INTRODUCTION: Primary Sjogren syndrome is considered as the most frequent connective tissue disease. Neurological complications may affect the peripheral nervous system and to lesser extent the central nervous system. Autonomic system nervous dysfunction and epilepsy have been rarely reported.
EXEGESIS: We present on case of Sjogren's syndrome with epilepsy and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. The epilepsia respond to valproate.
CONCLUSION: Autoimmune investigations for Sjogren's syndrome should be initiated in any patient presenting with unexplained neurologic manifestations.

Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory disease leading to disseminated lesions of the central nervous system resulting in both somatomotor and autonomic disturbances. These involve the central centers of the autonomic nervous system, as well as the automatic control and pathway systems. All autonomic functions may be disordered individually or in combined form. There is no other disease with a clinical picture so multifaceted. Besides cardiovascular dysfunctions disorders of bladder and rectum have become apparent. Somatomotor and autonomic disturbances occur with similar frequency; however the…

INTRODUCTION: The autonomic nervous system richly innervates the peri-AV nodal region and may be activated during radiofrequency (RF) ablation for AV nodal reentrant tachycardia, resulting in the generation of junctional tachycardia. The purpose of this prospective study was to determine the role of the autonomic nervous system in the genesis of junctional tachycardia.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We compared the characteristics of junctional tachycardia in patients with (n = 10) and without (n = 10) autonomic blockade undergoing RF ablation for AV nodal reentrant tachycardia. Intravenous administrat…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The autonomic nerve system is a potentially potent modulator of the initiation and perpetuation of atrial fibrillation. T … erve can serve as a sole triggering factor for the initiation of atrial fibrillation. Modulation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) by electrical stimulation has been tried as a treatment strategy clinically and experimentally. Recent studies showed that autonomic nervous system modulation can suppress the stellate ganglion nerve activity and reduce the incidence of paroxy …

UNLABELLED: Chagas disease (American Trypanosomyasis) is endemic in South America. It has been associated with autonomic dysfunction and increased stroke risk.
OBJECTIVE: To correlate findings in neurological examination, autonomic nervous system function, and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in patients with chronic Chagas disease.
METHODS: Neurological findings of 64 patients from a hospital cohort were correlated with disease stage (according to Los Andes classification) and with signs of autonomic nervous system function (respiratory sinus arrhythmia test). Also, 27 subjects with …

OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of Ménière's disease is still largely unknown; however, it is known to be strongly associated with stress. Excessive stress can cause hyperactivity of the sympathetic autonomic nervous system. With the aim of understanding changes in sympathetic hyperactivity before and after Ménière's disease, we compared autonomic nervous function in patients in a stable phase of Ménière's disease and that in healthy adults. We also gathered data over about 10 years on autonomic nervous function immediately before a Ménière's attack.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.

Analyzing the digital characteristics (chaotic and spectral features) of fetal and pregnant woman's heart period signal (HPS) can assess the autonomic nervous system function. Extracting and analyzing HPS of fetal and pregnant woman in perinatal period were realized by using the method of visual programming. The subjects were in supine position. Electrocardiography-signal (ECS) from the leads placed at symphysis pubic bone to inferior border of abdominal wall was acquired. ECS was preprocessed by wavelet filter. The sophisticated technique developed by our laboratory was used to analyze the di…

Heart rate variability is a measure of autonomic nervous system that regulates cardiac function. It is also a potential tool for quantifying its physiological changes under the age aspect. The research examined age characteristics and differences in autonomic control of cardiovascular system based on heart rate variability indicators in individuals of different ages (young men, mature age men, and the elderly men). We studied the influence of age on indicators of autonomic heart function in temporal and frequency sections of heart rate variability. For the purpose, one hundred ninety-two young…

Autonomic neuropathies represent a complex group of disorders that preferentially target autonomic fibers and can be classified as either acute/subacute or chronic in onset. Acute-onset autonomic neuropathies manifest with such conditions as paraneoplastic syndromes, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Sjögren syndrome, infection, or toxins/chemotherapy. When the presentation is acute, immune-mediated, and without a secondary cause, autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy is likely, and should be considered for immunotherapy. Of the chronic-onset forms, diabetes is the most widespread and disabling, with aut

Autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy (AAG) is a disease of autonomic failure caused by ganglionic acetylcholine receptor (gAChR) autoantibodies. Although the detection of autoantibodies is important for distinguishing the disease from other neuropathies that present with autonomic dysfunction, other factors are important for accurate diagnosis. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the clinical features of AAG, highlighting differences in clinical course, clinical presentation, and laboratory findings from other neuropathies presenting with autonomic symptoms. The first step in diagnosing

PURPOSE: The growing recognition of autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction across a broad spectrum of neurological and systemic diseases calls for structured, multidisciplinary care. This position statement by the European Federation of Autonomic Societies aims to provide guidance on establishing an autonomic unit within a neurology department.
METHODS: A Task Force appointed by the European Federation of Autonomic Societies board in October 2022 proposed staffing and equipment requirements for autonomic units, based on a literature review, survey data from ANS laboratories, and existing …

In addition to their more studied cognitive and motor effects, neurodegenerative diseases are also associated with impairments in autonomic function - the regulation of involuntary physiological processes. These autonomic impairments manifest in different ways and at different stages depending on the specific disease. The neural networks responsible for autonomic regulation in the brain and body have characteristics that render them particularly susceptible to the prion-like spread of protein aggregation involved in neurodegenerative diseases. Specifically, the axons of these neurons - in both
