In order to conduct this study, eight adult turkey heads were obtained. Pituitary glands were harvested following cranial bones removal and examined morphologically and anatomically as well as topographically. Then, tissue sections were prepared and stained using Hematoxylin and Eosin, Alcian blue, orange G and periodic acid-Schiff staining techniques. We observed increased numbers of an infrequently referenced poikilocyte, the prekeratocyte, in iron deficiency anemia (IDA) compared with beta-thalassemia minor and anemia of chronic disease (ACD) and, therefore, chose to quantify these cells and other morphologic features in these anemias. Prekeratocytes were observed in 31 (78%) of 40 IDAs vs 11 (37%) of 30 beta-thalassemias (P = .001) and 5 (13%) of 40 ACDs (P < .001) and averaged 0.78 per 1,000 RBCs in IDA vs 0.21 in beta-thalassemia (P < .001) and 0.075 in ACD (P < .001). Hematologic parameters from free-ranging screaming hairy armadillos, Chaetophractus vellerosus, were determined by hemocytometry and blood smear review. Packed cell volume was higher and basophil and eosinophil counts lower than those reported for this species in captivity. These findings will serve as a reference for future research.

Pericardial effusion associated with transient abnormal myelopoiesis in Down's syndrome neonates needs to be diagnosed in a timely manner, and the comorbidities must be treated to prevent mortality. To our knowledge, the occurrence of basophilic/eosinophilic pericardial effusion without an increase of these cells in the peripheral blood and with no evidence of associated hypothyroidism is rare.

We describe two patients with Nelson's syndrome in whom pregnancy progressed normally to spontaneous delivery of normal infants. One patient, who subsequently was found to have a basophil adenoma of the pituitary, developed diabetes insipidus in late pregnancy and the diabetes insipidus regressed spontaneously after delivery.

The monoclonal anti-immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody, omalizumab, was the first drug approved for use in patients with chronic idiopathic/spontaneous urticaria (CIU/CSU) who remain symptomatic despite H1 -antihistamine treatment. BACKGROUND: Industrial enzymes cause the increasing prevalence of occupational hypersensitivity. Our objective was to study workers occupationally exposed to fungal enzymes in 2 animal feed factories to determine if the sensitization originated in the enzymes or was caused by the microorganism used to produce the enzymes.
