Good choices, great future: an applied theatre prevention program to reduce alcohol-related risky behaviours during Schoolies.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The contextual and temporal factors of post-school celebratory events ('Schoolies') place young people at elevated risk of excessive drinking compared with other social occasions. This study investigates the impact of an applied theatre prevention program 'Choices' in reducing the risk of drinking and other risk behaviours during Schoolies celebrations. DESIGN AND METHODS: Choices was delivered in the last term of Year 12 across 28 North Queensland schools. A total of 352 school leavers (43.1% male, mean age = 17.14 years) completed a questionnaire at Whitsunday Schooli

A hidden cost of drinking: Alcohol use and gendered inequalities in unpaid care work.

The impact of alcohol use on families is an important, yet frequently understudied, avenue of research. Unpaid care work, which encompasses childcare, eldercare, cooking, and cleaning, and alcohol use, are both gendered. Men are more likely to consume alcohol, binge drink, and have alcohol use disorder and women do more unpaid care work in families. Given the gendered nature of both, this study aims to assess if alcohol consumption impacts the distribution of unpaid care work in families by gender. Using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), a longitudinal dataset, this paper analyzes how

Alcohol-cancer risk communication on social media: A content analysis of alcohol-related Instagram and TikTok posts.

BACKGROUND: Despite consistent evidence of the relationship between alcohol use and cancer risk, awareness of the alcohol-cancer link remains low among American adults. Given the increasing prominence of social media as a health information source, this study systematically examined samples of alcohol-related Instagram and TikTok posts to identify mentions of the alcohol-cancer link and characterize post content. METHODS: We collected public Instagram and TikTok posts made on or before May 12, 2024, via a hashtag-based search for posts tagged with #alcohol, #beer, #wine, #liquor, and #cocktai

Alcohol amount, drinking patterns, and gastric cancer risk: a nationwide study using targeted maximum likelihood estimation.

Alcohol is a carcinogen; however, the risk associated with low-level drinking remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the associations of alcohol amount and drinking patterns with gastric cancer (GC) risk. We analyzed 6,007,469 Korean adults aged 50-69 who participated in the national health screening program in 2010-2011 and were followed for up to 10 years. Alcohol intake (g/day) was categorized as none, light, moderate, high, or heavy drinking. Targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE) with Super Learner was applied to estimate risk ratios (RRs) for GC, adjusting for confounders selecte

Reduced drinking as a mechanism for alcohol and violence-related intervention effects from Positive Change©.

PURPOSE: Alcohol use and sexual assault (SA) victimization often co-occur on college campuses, and prevention programs should ideally address both of these public health issues with integrated evidence-based interventions. Positive Change© is a web-based intervention with integrated content on alcohol and SA using personalized normative feedback tailored by participant gender identity and sexual orientation. Building from previous program evaluations, the current study examines alcohol use as a mediator for the intervention effects of Positive Change© on alcohol-related consequences, SA victim

Gene network inference and master regulator analysis identifies the estrogen-related receptor gamma (ERRγ) as a therapeutic target for alcohol use disorder (AUD).

Differential gene expression is often inadequate to predict the activity of transcription factors and their contribution to the phenotypes a … tional and druggability potential. The ERRγ agonist, GSK4716, reduced alcohol drinking in the mouse binge drinking paradigm of drinking in the dark (DID) and in both non-dependent mice as well as in mice made dependent by chronic intermittent vapor exposure (CIE). GSK4716 also prevented alcohol-conditioned place preference without affecting saccharin intake or m …

Sex differences in alcohol-cued inhibitory control in a range of drinkers.

Alcohol use disorder has primarily been a male-dominated problem, but gaps in alcohol use and consumption are closing, with females increasingly engaging in heavy and binge drinking. However, there has been limited research that has examined how alcohol-related cues affect inhibitory control differently in males and females. The present study investigated sex differences in alcohol-cued inhibitory control across a spectrum of drinkers. Participants (N = 267) aged 21-60 were recruited via Prolific and categorized as nondrinkers, light, moderate, or heavy drinkers based on self-reported alcohol …

Development and initial validation of the obsessive compulsive eating scale.

OBJECTIVE: Food cravings are common and have been implicated in eating-related pathology, including binge eating, bulimia nervosa, and unhealthy weight problems, but difficulties in defining and quantifying the phenomenon of craving are well documented. There has been an increase in focus on the study of cognitive mechanisms underlying craving, in particular the role of intrusive thoughts; however, existing craving measures fail to fully capture these aspects of the craving experience. The present study was designed to develop a psychometrically sound measure of the obsessive-compulsive aspect

Dissolving contradictory demands: A systematic review of alcohol use of working mothers.

BACKGROUND: Working mothers perform 'double shifts' of paid and domestic labour. Increased rates of employment among mothers in high income countries, and the impact of the alcohol industry actively promoting alcohol to working mothers, makes it crucial for preventative efforts to understand the factors driving alcohol use among this population. This systematic review of qualitative and quantitative studies provides an overview of the drinking patterns of working mothers and their predictors. METHODS: Four databases were systematically searched in August 2024. The population of interest were

Gonadal Sex and Sex-Chromosome Complement Interact to Affect Ethanol Consumption in Adolescent Four Core Genotypes Mice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Sex differences in ethanol consumption have been reported in both humans and laboratory rodents, but the independent/dependent contributions of genetic and hormonal sex biasing mechanisms to these phenotypes have not yet been fully explored. METHODS: To examine the contributions of sex-chromosome complement (SCC) and gonadal sex (GS) to ethanol consumption, we studied adolescent (28-32 days old) four core genotypes (FCG) mice on a C57BL/6J background, a model which allows for independent assortment of GS and SCC. Binge alcohol and the neuroendocrinology of the aging female.

Aging and alcohol exert marked effects on the endocrine system - in particular the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes. The aging female brain represents a unique substrate for alcohol effects, given that both the HPG and HPA undergo significant changes with aging in women, making this demographic notably different from both males and younger females. Little attention has been directed at alcohol effects in this group but changing trends in women's drinking have brought these issues to the forefront. Major gaps in our understanding of aging female
