Expandable Nanocomposite Shape-Memory Hemostat for the Treatment of Noncompressible Hemorrhage.

Noncompressible hemorrhage is a leading cause of death in both combat and lay settings, primarily due to the challenges in accessing and treating injuries deep within abdominal tissues where traditional compression-based methods are ineffective. Existing hemostatic materials fail to address the needs of large wound cavities, necessitating the development of advanced materials with rapid expansion and superior hemostatic properties. Here we report an expandable hemostat engineered from a nanocomposite-coated shape memory foam. This material exhibits rapid expansion, achieving a ~5X increase in

Highly ordered macroporous hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks based on small biocompatible molecules.

Template method offers a promising strategy for synthesizing large pore inaccessible through traditional molecular design. However, this approach has not yet been successfully implemented in molecular assemblies based on weak non-covalent interactions (NCIs), mainly because the assemblies often deviate from original structures during template-assisted syntheses, and the resulting porous structures lack the robustness to survive upon template removal. In this work, we address these challenges through choosing small biocompatible building blocks featuring multiple hydrogen-bonded sites and exten

Tuning casein coagulation and structure: Exploring the effects of ionic strength and glycerol.

Casein-based materials offer a sustainable platform for advanced biomaterials, yet the impact of ionic strength on their macroscopic structure and properties remains largely unexplored. This study investigates the coagulation (and gelation) of sodium caseinate solutions (14-20 wt%) at the isoelectric point in citric acid-trisodium citrate buffers of varying strengths (30-300 mM). The results demonstrate that buffer strength significantly influences water content, compactness, mechanical strength, and optical properties of the formed hydrogels. Notably, samples coagulated in 100 mM buffer exhib

Stability Study of Anticoagulant Hydrogel Coatings Toward Long-Term Cardiovascular Devices.

Implantable cardiovascular devices have revolutionized the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, yet their long-term functionality without causing thrombosis is a persistent challenge. Although the surface modification of anticoagulant coating has greatly improved the biocompatibility of the devices, its long-term stability in complex physiological environments still remains questionable. Herein, the stability of three anticoagulant hydrogel coatings, poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC), poly(sodium 2-acryloyl-2-methylpropanesulfonate) (PAMPS), and poly(4-styrenesulfonate sod

Vascular embolic nanobiomaterials for efficient tumor treatment.

Embolization is a minimally invasive cancer treatment method. Embolization involves artificially blocking blood flow using an embolic agent to block abnormal blood vessels that supply nutrients or oxygen to a specific lesion, thereby killing the lesion, inhibiting its growth, and stopping bleeding. Currently, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gelatin are the most popular embolic agents. These substances are available in various sizes and shapes that physically obstruct blood flow to cause vascular embolization. They are commonly used due to their ease of use and low cost. However, they can cause sid

Photoinitiated CVD antifouling coatings enable long-term stability of flexible multifunctional neural probes for chronic neural recording.

Flexible neural probes with integrated recording, optical stimulation, and drug delivery capabilities offer unprecedented access to neural circuit dynamics. However, their long-term utility is compromised by foreign body responses that isolate recording sites from target neurons. This study introduces photoinitiated chemical vapor deposition (piCVD) as a transformative approach to neural interface stability through ultrathin (<100 nm) anti-fouling coatings. Unlike conventional hydrogel coatings that impair electrical signal transmission, our piCVD-applied poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-et
