Zoonotic infections constitute a major cause of reproductive failure and perinatal mortality in humans and animals. Among the most relevant etiological agents are Listeria monocytogenes, Brucella spp., and Toxoplasma gondii, which, despite distinct biological properties, share the capacity to breach placental defenses, establish intracellular niches, and impair fetal development. This review aims to synthesize current knowledge on the pathological and pathogenic mechanisms underlying fetal and neonatal death associated with these pathogens, with a focus on placental infection, vertical transmi

The widespread use of pesticides plays a vital role in safeguarding crop yields and ensuring global food security. However, their improper application has led to serious challenges, including environmental pollution, pesticide residues, and increasing insect resistance. Traditional chemical pesticides are no longer sufficient to meet the demands for sustainable modern agriculture. Recent advances in nanotechnology offer innovative strategies for improving pesticide delivery, bioavailability, and selectivity. This review systematically summarizes the current progress in nano-insecticides, inclu

Bioactive small molecules isolated from animals, plants, fungi and bacteria, including natural antimicrobial peptides, have shown great therapeutic potential worldwide. Among these peptides, snake venom cathelicidins are being widely exploited, because the variation in the composition of the venom reflects a range of biological activities that may be of biotechnological interest. Cathelicidins are short, cationic, and amphipathic molecules. They play an important role in host defense against microbial infections. We are currently facing a strong limitation on pharmacological interventions for

Ewing sarcoma (ES) is the second most common bone tumor affecting primarily adolescents and young adults. Despite recent advances in biological understanding, intensification of chemotherapeutic treatments, and progress in local control with surgery and/or radiation therapy, patients with metastatic or recurrent ES continue to have a dismal prognosis with less than 20% overall survival. All ES is likely metastatic at diagnosis although our methods of detection and classification may not account for this. Progressive disease may arise via a combination of: (1) selection of chemotherapy-resistan

Vitamin D has played a central role in the nephrologist's armamentarium, with active vitamin D analogues enjoying broad use for treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Increasing data are now coming to light about the broader biological actions of vitamin D, including wide-ranging effects in several endocrine pathways, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, and even the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). As additional agents are emerging to help with control of metabolic bone disease, these nontraditional pathways of vitamin D action will become increasingly important to con

Long before ionising radiations were discovered, attempts were made to exploit elevated temperatures to control malignant tumours. At irregular intervals over the last 100 years, hyperthermia has been suggested for use in cancer therapy but has never become established. There is little doubt that heat alone can destroy tumours; and it can enhance the anti-cancer effects of radiation and chemotherapeutic agents. Laboratory and in vivo animal data provide hyperthermia with a strong biological rationale, which gives the more recent revival of interest a sounder base than previously. The exact sci

Achieving atomically precise control over paramagnetic coordination environments is challenging because relaxivity's sixth power dependence on metal water distance demands sub-angstrom precision while also requiring rapid water exchange, two inherently competing requirements in conventional systems. Here, leveraging dual-atom coordination engineering as a rational material design strategy, we successfully synthesized a novel dual-atom manganese-based platform featuring a well-defined asymmetric Mn2-N3O3 geometry anchored on hierarchical boron nitride (Mn-BN). Notably, this atomic-level enginee

The persistent threat of emerging and re-emerging viral infections underscores the urgent need for the continuous development of next-generation antiviral agents. The deoxygenative functionalization of oxygen-containing compounds offers a powerful route to address this challenge. Herein, we report a radical-mediated deoxyphosphoamination of ketones to synthesize a new class of antiviral compounds, including N-(2-(diphenylphosphoryl)-1H-inden-3-yl)-P,P-diphenylphosphinic amide (IDPA) and its homologues. This transformation proceeds under simple, mild, and easily operable reaction conditions, ex

Macrophomina phaseolina is a vital seed and soil-borne phytopathogen responsible for substantial crop yield losses. Although various methods exist for managing soil-borne pathogens, such as agronomic practices, chemical treatments, and varietal tolerance, biological control utilizing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) or their secondary metabolites presents promising avenues. In this study, a screening of 150 isolates from the rhizosphere of Vigna radiata L. was conducted to identify strains capable of promoting host growth and controlling charcoal rot disease. Among the tested isolat

: The COVID-19 pandemic is challenging our cardiovascular care of patients with heart diseases. In the setting of pericardial diseases, there are two possible different scenarios to consider: the patient being treated for pericarditis who subsequently becomes infected with SARS-CoV-2, and the patient with COVID-19 who develops pericarditis or pericardial effusion. In both conditions, clinicians may be doubtful regarding the safety of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, colchicine, and biological agents, such as anti-IL1 agents (e.g. anakinra), that are the mainstay

This article reviews the application of the human airway Calu-3 cell line as a respiratory model for studying the effects of gas concentrations, exposure time, biophysical stress, and biological agents on human airway epithelial cells. Calu-3 cells are grown to confluence at an air-liquid interface on permeable supports. To model human respiratory conditions and treatment modalities, monolayers are placed in an environmental chamber, and exposed to specific levels of oxygen or other therapeutic modalities such as positive pressure and medications to assess the effect of interventions on inflam

Autologous bone grafts are commonly used to repair defects in skeletal tissue, however, due to their limited supply there is a clinical need for alternatives. Synthetic ceramics present a promising option but currently lack biological activity to stimulate bone regeneration. One potential approach to address this limitation is the incorporation of immunomodulatory agents. In this study, we investigate the application of microbial stimuli to stimulate bone formation. Three different microbial stimuli were incorporated in a biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramic: Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG),

Colletotrichum acutatum is one of the causal agents of anthracnose in several crops, and of post-flowering fruit drop (PFD) in citrus and key lime anthracnose (KLA). The pathogen normally attacks flowers, causing lesions only in open flowers. Under very favorable conditions, however, it can also affect flower buds and small fruits, causing complete rotting of the fruit and a premature fall, resulting in major economic crop losses. We isolated endophytic fungi from Tahiti lime to evaluate its diversity, verify its antagonistic capacity against the phytopathogen Colletotrichum acutatum C-100 in

Experiments were performed to ascertain the effect on core temperature in the rat of central administration of 3 products of the lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonate metabolism. The agents tested were leukotrienes C4, D4, and E4 (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4). In one series of rats, the leukotrienes were injected into the ventral aspect of the third cerebral ventricle (5 microliter injection volume). Each rat received, in separate experimental sessions, an injection of a control solution, of 1 microgram of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and of 1 microgram of LTC4, LTD4, or LTE4. In another series of rats, bilate

The Australian Plague Locust Commission (APLC) manages locust populations across 2 million square kilometers of eastern Australia using the aerial application of chemical and biological control agents to protect agricultural production. This occurs via a preventative control strategy involving ultralow-volume spray equipment to distribute small droplets of control agent over a target area. The economic costs of, and potential gains stemming from, locust control are well documented. The application of insecticides, however, to fragile arid and semiarid ecosystems is a task that brings with it b…

The events of 11 September 2001, in New York City, and subsequent identification of anthrax in the United States Postal System, have generated a new sense of awareness for the potential of biological terrorism, if not warfare. Among those agents identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as 'Class A Bioterrorist Threats', smallpox is among the most dangerous. The ease of transmission of this agent, the lack of immunity in the population at large to this agent, and rapidity of its spread, if released, all generate significant concern for its deployment. A vaccine directed agai

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors have reshaped the pharmacotherapeutic armamentarium for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), distinguished by oral dosing, ambient-temperature stability, immunity from anti-drug antibody formation, and a characteristically brisk pharmacodynamic onset, properties that collectively set them apart from injectable biologic agents. The epidemiological footprint of IBD is expanding at an accelerating pace across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, yet meaningful access to biologic therapies remains starkly uneven, constrained by coldchai

Thyroid eye disease (TED), also referred to Graves' ophthalmopathy, is a disfiguring and vision-threatening autoimmune disease of the retroocular tissues occurring in patients with Graves' disease (GD). Among the extrathyroidal manifestations of GD, TED is the most frequent, being observed in roughly 30-50% of patients. In the immunopathogenesis of TED, the TSH-R/IGF-1R complex has a determinant role. TED is commonly bilateral, and during its active phase it presents with ocular redness, eyelid edema, photophobia, proptosis, and diplopia. In the most severe cases, the involvement of the optic
