Adrenal steroids regulate postnatal development of the rat dentate gyrus: II. Effects of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids on cell birth.

Unlike the majority of mammalian brain regions, the rat dentate gyrus undergoes maximal cell birth and cell death during the same developmental time period. Granule cell birth and death peak at the end of the first postnatal week. We have found that manipulations of glucocorticoid levels during the stress hyporesponsive period profoundly influence the density of pyknotic cells in the dentate gyrus while apparently not affecting the density of healthy cells. This raises the possibility that glucocorticoids are regulating processes in addition to cell death, i.e., cell birth. In order to determi

Trends and distribution patterns of infant mortality and maternal HIV positivity in South Africa: A decade review (2007 - 2016).

BACKGROUND: The infant mortality rate (IMR) (24 per 1 000 live births) remains high in South Africa (SA), well above the recommended sustainable development goal (SDG) 3 of 12 deaths per 1 000 live births. High infant mortality is a poor indicator of the health of a population and will hamper attainment of the SDGs. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the trends and distribution patterns of IMR between 2007 and 2016 and its association with HIV-positive pregnant mothers in SA. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional study design by analysing secondary data on infant mortality from the 2007 and 201

S100B - a potential biomarker for early detection of neonatal brain damage following asphyxia.

Birth asphyxia results in a significant percentage of neonatal morbidity and mortality. A key factor in the management of this complication is the early and accurate detection of brain damage following asphyxia. Currently, reliable tools for such diagnosis are absent. Extensive research has focused on biomarkers in an attempt to solve this matter. Recent data marked serum and urine elevation of the S100B protein as an established peripheral biomarker for detection of brain injury including traumatic head injuries and brain damage following cardiac arrest and stroke. In the past decade, a subst

Resuscitation and emergency management for neonatal foals.

Early intervention can dramatically alter outcome in foals. Cardio-pulmonary cerebral resuscitation can be successful and clinically worthwhile when applied to foals that arrest as part of the birthing process. Readily available equipment and an ordered plan starting with addressing the respiratory system (airway and breathing) followed by the circulatory system (circulation and drugs) are the keys to success. Hypoglycemia is common in foals that are not nursing and in septic foals. Support of serum glucose can be an important emergency treatment. Respiratory support with oxygen therapy should

Maternal and perinatal risk factors for SIDS: a novel analysis utilizing pregnancy outcome data.

UNLABELLED: A number of maternal and perinatal factors to increase an infant's risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) have been found in past investigations. We analysed data for potential SIDS risk factors including the presence of complications or conditions considered as detrimental to the infant's or mother's health. The data for 118 SIDS cases and 227 matched controls were obtained from a state pregnancy outcome unit. SIDS was found to be significantly more common in cases where the infant's mother was not in a relationship (i.e. divorced, separated or never married) (p = 0.005), if

Immunization uptake in younger siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Parental concerns persist that immunization increases the risk of autism spectrum disorder, resulting in the potential for reduced uptake by parents of younger siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder ("younger sibs"). OBJECTIVE: To compare immunization uptake by parents for their younger child relative to their older child with autism spectrum disorder ("proband") and controls. DESIGN: Immunization status was obtained for 98 "younger sibs," 98 "probands," and 65 controls. RESULTS: A significant group difference emerged for overall immunization status (Fisher's exact t

The development of gendered interests and personality qualities from middle childhood through adolescence: a biosocial analysis.

This study charted the development of gendered personality qualities and activity interests from age 7 to age 19 in 364 first- and secondborn siblings from 185 White, middle/working-class families, assessed links between time in gendered social contexts (with mother, father, female peers, and male peers) and gender development, and tested whether changes in testosterone moderated links between time use and gender development. Multilevel models documented that patterns of change varied across dimensions of gender and by sex and birth order and that time in gendered social contexts was generally…

Relationship between childhood infections and measured intelligence.

The possibility that some of the common childhood infections lead to unrecognized impairments of neurological function was examined in 43 82 … ue to class differences which are not eliminated completely by standardization for maternal age and birth order. Mean scores were a little higher for children who had had rubella than for those who had not, and it is suggested that this difference may be due to more frequent reporting of the disease by the more intelligent mothers.

The impact of health care and nutritional education on an urban community in Zambia through the under five clinics.

A social survey was carried out on 60 surviving children who suffered from severe kwashiorkor, using 60 "normal" peers drawn from the same socio-economic area. The impact of local under five clinics in the area with regard to health education and health care was assessed and found to be inadequate, despite the large number of clinics available. The replacement of these under five clinics by "at risk" clinics for children of all ages within the framework of a community health centre was suggested.

Ampicillin in the treatment of preterm labor: a randomised, placebo-controlled study.

This study was performed in order to assess whether the use of oral ampicillin vs. placebo therapy in women with latent-phase preterm labor delays delivery and improves pregnancy outcome. A prospective, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was performed of 110 women at 22-34 weeks of gestation. Patients received oral ampicillin 1 g (n = 59) or placebo (n = 51) every 8 h for 7 days. Outcome measures comprised gestational age at delivery, birth weight, Apgar score, perinatal death, neonatal infection, fetal growth restriction, histological chorioamnionitis and puerperal infection.

A review on effect and treatment of perinatal Ureaplasma urealyticum colonization/infection in neonates.

Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) is the most frequently detected in the maternal genitalia, is mainly transmitted through vertical transmission at birth to neonates, with its complex etiology and adverse effects on neonatal health. While its etiologic significance in many aspects of neonatal diseases remains unknown, recent evidence indicates that UU is a cause of low birth weight, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, neonatal meningitis, retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, and abnormal blood cell counts, and is closely related to long-term prognosis in newborns. However, the most critica

Pregnancy and Birth Survey of the Fukushima Health Management Survey.

The Pregnancy and Birth Survey was started by Fukushima Medical University as part of the Fukushima Health Management Survey in 2011 in order to assess the physical and mental health of mothers and provide parenting support (telephone counseling) for those in need. The present study reviewed the major findings from 4 annual surveys conducted from 2011 to 2014. Overall proportions of preterm deliveries, low birth weight infants, and congenital anomalies in the first year were almost the same as those in national surveillance data. The prevalence of depressive symptoms among the mothers held ste

Klinefelter's syndrome in adolescence.

Twelve boys with Klinefelter's syndrome (47,XXY) identified by sex chromatin screening at birth were examined at between ages 16 and 18 years, together with 12 controls matched for social class and birth order from the same newborn population. Physical examination, psychometric assessment, personality, and degree of psychosexual development were assessed without knowledge of the karyotype. Anthropometry showed increased leg length and decreased head circumference in the XXY boys. Gynaecomastia was present in 4 boys, and testicular volume was reduced in the majority but one boy had normal sized…

The prevalence and patterns of chromosome abnormalities in newborns with major congenital anomalies: A retrospective study from Saudi Arabia.

Congenital anomalies are a worldwide health problem that places a burden on the family and society. Chromosome abnormalities are one of the leading causes for congenital anomalies in newborns. Despite the remarkable development in cytogenetic services in the past years, still there are limited data from Middle East countries. The current study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and patterns of chromosomal aberrations in newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with major congenital anomalies at Medina province in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Out of 2,541 live births, 1
