Physeal distraction is an alternative to more conventional treatments for the correction of angular deformities of the long bones. Twenty deformities of the femur and tibia, nine of which also involved associated shortening, were partially or completely corrected. In eight cases, there was physeal bony bridge. Twenty-four patients treated for tibial shortening secondary to poliomyelitis were reviewed at least 20 years after operation. We used the Ilizarov method in seven patients with severe congenital radial club hands who had had previous wrist surgery, to correct residual shortening and bowing of the ulna together with recurrent wrist deformity.
