Ultrasonography of the accessory nerve: normal and pathologic findings in cadavers and patients with iatrogenic accessory nerve palsy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine feasibility of ultrasonography in detecting the normal accessory nerve as well as pathologic changes in cases of accessory nerve palsy. METHODS: Four patients with accessory nerve palsy were investigated by ultrasonography. Three cases of accessory nerve palsy after lymph node biopsy and neck dissection were primarily diagnosed on the basis of ultrasonography using a 5- to 12-MHz linear transducer. In addition, we performed ultrasonography in 3 cadaveric specimens to show the feasibility of detecting the accessory nerve. RESULT: Nerve transection (n = 2), scar tissue …

Electromagnetic heating of breast tumors in interventional radiology: in vitro and in vivo studies in human cadavers and mice.

PURPOSE: To assess relevant parameters for the minimally invasive elimination of breast tumors by using a selective application of magnetite and exposure of the breast to an alternating magnetic field. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The specific absorption rate (SAR) of different magnetite samples was determined calorimetrically. Temperature elevations based on magnetite mass (7-112 mg) and magnetic field amplitude (1.2-6.5 kA/m frequency, 400 kHz) were investigated by using human breast tissue. Parameter combinations (21 mg +/- 9 [SD], 242-second magnetic field exposure, 6.5-kA/m amplitude) were tes

Tc-99m MAG3 evaluation of recipients with En bloc renal grafts from pediatric cadavers.

Tc-99m MAG3 scintigraphy is a well-established test to monitor patients who have received renal grafts. The shortage of available kidneys has forced the development of alternative sources of donors. En bloc pediatric renal grafts have been used for more than 10 years with good results, but mechanical complications are still a concern. No reports have illustrated the Tc-99m MAG3 scintigraphic aspect of the most common complications resulting from en bloc pediatric renal grafts. The authors describe three recipients of en bloc renal graft. One patient had thrombosis of one of the two grafts, one

Posterior calcaneal osteotomy with wedge: cadaver testing of a new procedure for insufficiency of the posterior tibial tendon.

Insufficiency of the posterior tibial tendon is challenging to treat. When the deformity is flexible, treatment options have included tendon … red with a medial slide calcaneal osteotomy and an Evans lengthening of the lateral column, using a cadaver flatfoot model. Radiographic measurements were made to evaluate correction of the planovalgus deformity after each of these procedures. There was statistically significant improved correction with the new osteotomy compared with that in a standard m …

Evolving stages of lipohemarthrosis of the knee. Sequential magnetic resonance imaging findings in cadavers with clinical correlation.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Lipohemarthrosis, the presence of fat and blood in a joint cavity, exhibits several complex layers related to differences in specific component relaxation on magnetic resonance (MR) images. The authors investigated sequential changes in the appearance of lipohemarthrosis of the knee as demonstrated by MR imaging. METHODS: Sequential MR imaging over a 4-day period was performed on two cadaveric knees after intraarticular injection of blood from a volunteer and fat from a cadaveric tibia (50 mL of blood and 25 mL of fat in one knee and 15 mL of blood and 5 mL of fat in…

Flexor tendon tears in the hand: use of MR imaging to diagnose degree of injury in a cadaver model.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of flexor tendon lacerations of the finger partly depends on the degree of injury, which is difficult to determine clinically. We used a cadaver model to investigate the potential of MR imaging in evaluating these injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scalpel was drawn transversely across the volar surface of four cadaver hands, producing various flexor tendon injuries. MR imaging of each hand was performed using axial two-dimensional spin-echo and three-dimensional gradient-recalled-echo sequences. The three-dimensional data sets were interactively reformatted along the lon…

[Comparative study of stability following the nailing of fractures of the femur shaft. An experimental study with cadaver bones].

Intramedullary osteosynthesis is preferred for shaft fractures of the long bones of the lower extremities because it generally results in ea … ility. To this end a comparative experimental investigation was carried out using femora from human cadavers to determine whether or not either method of intramedullary osteosynthesis attained the stability of the intact bone. The study also set out to establish the relevance of the type of fracture, localisation and mode of fitting to the resulting stabi …

Submental Approach Robotic-Assisted Neck Dissection (SARAND) for Minimally Invasive Bilateral Neck Dissection: A Feasibility Cadaver Dissection Study.

BACKGROUND: Following promising initial results of the robotic-assisted extended "Sistrunk" approach (RESA) that uses a submental incision to hypopharyngeal and laryngeal tumors, bypassing the base of tongue, we report its further development: submental approach robotic-assisted neck dissection (SARAND), intended to enable bilateral neck dissections. METHODS: Bilateral neck dissections (levels I-IV) were performed on three cadavers using both multiport and single-port robotic platforms. RESULTS: We demonstrate the feasibility of performing levels I-IV dissections through a single submental i…

Novel Full-Length Dissection of the Sympathetic Chain and Spinal Cord From T1-L1 in a Human Cadaver.

Anatomical investigations of the sympathetic chain have traditionally relied on regionally limited or anterior evisceration-based dissections, restricting appreciation of its longitudinal organization and relationships to the spinal cord. To date, no human cadaveric study has demonstrated a continuous bilateral in situ dissection of the paravertebral sympathetic chain from T1 to L1 in continuity with the spinal cord. This technical report describes a novel, reproducible posterior cadaveric dissection that preserves the bilateral sympathetic trunks, paravertebral ganglia, interganglionic fibers…

Challenging arterial patterns of renal and testicular arteries in a human cadaver: clinical significance and embryological bases revisited.

Typically, a kidney gets its arterial supply from a single renal artery, and the testicular arteries originate from the anterolateral surface of the abdominal aorta. The present case describes a variation in the origin of the testicular artery, which originates from a right accessory renal artery. We observed two renal arteries with the inferior vena cava sandwiched in between. The testicular artery originates from the inferior margin of the accessory renal artery, coursing down alongside the testicular vein into the right testis. During cephalic migration in embryogenesis, the conjunction of

A Novel Native Tissue Apical Suspension Procedure Harvesting the Uterosacral Ligament Onto Vaginal Tissue: The NASHUS Cadaver Study.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The uterosacral ligaments (USLs) are bilateral deep pelvic support structures used in pelvic floor reconstructive surgery for treatment of apical pelvic organ prolapse (POP). We assessed the feasibility of a new surgical technique using the distal USLs. METHODS: Fresh frozen un-embalmed female cadavers were studied over a 2-year period (2021 to 2023) to evaluate USL characteristics. The surgical technique involved harvesting the distal USL and applying it to the anterior and posterior cervix. Selected specimens underwent suture pull-out strength testing of the har…

Is the popliteal tendon sufficient for all-inside suture in lateral meniscus repair? A 22-case cadaver study.

INTRODUCTION: Arthroscopic lateral meniscus repair is performed in the "figure-of-4 position" (supine, with the affected knee flexed and the lower leg crossed over the extended contralateral leg), and anchorage is often on the popliteal tendon. Extending the limb at the end of the procedure alters the relations between the popliteal tendon and the repaired meniscus. The present study aimed to assess lateral meniscal suture fixation on the popliteal tendon after a cycle of flexion-extension. HYPOTHESIS: Extending the knee can induce suture release. TYPE OF STUDY: Cadaver study. MATERIALS AND…

Effect of patient head position on the aspirated volume of regurgitated clear fluid. A fresh human cadaver study.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between regurgitated and aspirated volume of clear fluids remains undetermined and may depend on anatomical factors and patient position. We aimed to assess whether head position (sniffing vs. extension position) affected this relationship in fresh human cadavers. We also determined the critical volume of water regurgitated that led to pulmonary aspiration of volume ≥ 0.8 mL kg-1 and ≥ 1.5 mL kg-1 for each head position. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six volumes of water (40, 80, 100, 120, 150, and 200 mL) were injected each twice, in a randomised order, at a flow rate …

Volar locking plates not touching the flexor pollicis longus tendon appear as prominences on radiographs: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Plate protrusion is a risk factor for flexor pollicis longus (FPL) rupture following volar locking plate (VLP) surgery. However, plate prominence on follow-up radiographs is common. We hypothesised that a VLP that does not touch the FPL tendon can appear as a plate prominence projected over the volar ridge on lateral radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied six current designs of widely used plates in formalin-fixed cadavers. Each plate was placed in six cadavers. We analysed 36 different plate-cadaver combinations. The main aim of plate fixation was to position the plate in…
