We examined blood Mg, Ca and Zn in 33 patients with senile, 18 patients with postmenopausal and 9 patients with medicamentous osteoporosis. The biochemical signs of chronic Mg deficiency were present in the first two groups due to lowering erythrocyte Mg. Correlation among these three ions in serum and erythrocytes brought different patterns which were richer in the first two groups compared with the third one. Six males and one female with chronic tic disorders, whose ages ranged from 12 to 31 years, were evaluated before treatment, after 1 month on placebo, after a single 10 mg nifedipine dose (three patients), and monthly while on flunarizine 10-15 mg (mean dose of 13 mg). None of the patients receiving nifedipine improved, but treatment with flunarizine significantly decreased both motor and phonic tic severity and frequency in all but one patient. Monotherapy with calcium antagonists nifedipine, foridon and verapamil hydrochloride was assessed in 46 patients with chronic glomerulonephritis and arterial hypertension by hypotensive effect and changes in systemic and renal hemodynamics, water-electrolytic balance, renin-angiotensin system. The prevalence of lactase deficiency and the relationship between lactose and calcium malabsorption in postmenopausal osteoporosis has been assessed in 46 subjects. Malabsorption of lactose occurred in 25 (54%) of the subjects and was associated with a significantly lower milk intake. Two patients with Tourette's disorder were treated with calcium antagonists. Verapamil and nifedipine produced positive responses, and diltiazem produced no response. Given the negative side effects of the current drugs for this disorder, the authors suggest further study of calcium antagonists.

The effect of vitamin A on calcium-regulating hormones was studied in rats. A single oral dose of 30 mg retinol equivalents (RE) given to adult rats caused no change to serum biologically active parathyroid hormone (bioactive-PTH) concentrations. In intact rats we studied the influence of low doses of intravenously (i.v.) administered somatostatin (SRIF) on the net absorption and the bidirectional fluxes (lumen-to-plasma, LP; plasma-to-lumen, PL) of calcium in the duodenum, jejunum, ileum and caecum.
