Histiocytic sarcoma in the tarsus of a cat.

A 12-year-old Persian cat was examined for a firm swelling of the right tarsal region and enlargement of the corresponding right popliteal lymph node. Cytologic evaluation demonstrated a population of malignant cells consistent with large cell lymphoma. Necropsy revealed a multi-lobulated subcutaneous mass involving the tarsus with some extension into adjacent deep muscular tissue. Histologically, the mass was composed of round cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and pleomorphic anisokaryotic nuclei. Evidence of articular and nodal infiltration by these cells was observed. Differential diagnoses

Chondrosarcoma of the proximal humerus in a cat.

Chondrosarcoma of the proximal humerus was diagnosed in a four-year-old, castrated male, domestic shorthair cat that was presented with a slowly growing solid mass in the region of the proximal humerus. Forequarter amputation was advised, but declined by the owners. Following surgical debulking clinical signs resolved, but two months after surgery the cat was readmitted because the mass had recurred in the same region. The forequarter was amputated. Histopathological evaluation of the tumour confirmed the diagnosis of chondrosarcoma. Follow-up examinations performed over a period of 15 months

Transcervical artificial insemination in the cat.

Many studies have reported new reproductive techniques for reproduction in endangered non-domestic felids. Artificial insemination is an important tool for developing breeding programs. This manuscript reviews recent progress in feline artificial insemination, with particular emphasis on intrauterine sperm deposition. Intrauterine insemination of felids results in higher fertilization rates than intravaginal insemination, despite insemination with fewer sperm. Although surgical insemination was utilized historically, there are some reports of catheterization of the cervix of the queen. Recentl

Suspected fibrocartilaginous embolism in a cat.

A 12-year-old cat was presented to the University of Queensland's Small Animal Teaching Hospital with a 1-day history of left hemiparesis of acute onset, with no evidence of trauma or toxin exposure. Neurological examination findings were consistent with a lesion in the caudal left cervical spinal cord (C6 to C8), which was non-painful and had not progressed since the onset of clinical signs. No other abnormalities were found, although myelography showed a mild swelling involving the caudal cervical and cranial thoracic spinal segments. A diagnosis of suspected fibrocartilaginous embolism was

Bartonella quintana in domestic cat.

We recovered Bartonella quintana DNA from dental pulp of a domestic cat. This study, the first to detect B. quintana in a nonhuman mammal, changes our understanding of the epidemiology of this infection and proposes that cats may be an emerging source of human infection.

Traumatic partial hypopituitarism in a cat.

Traumatic hypopituitarism was diagnosed in an 11-month-old male neutered cat. The presenting complaints were polydipsia, polyuria and lethargy of three months' duration. Craniocerebral trauma, as a result of a road traffic accident, had preceded the onset of clinical signs by six weeks. Neurological examination revealed right-sided mydriasis, reduced visual and tactile left forelimb placing reflexes and decreased proprioception in both the left fore- and hindlimb. Initial laboratory findings included hypernatraemia, hyperchloraemia, mild azotaemia, eosinophilia and isosthenuria. Low basal cort

[Cat-scratch disease neuroretinitis].

We report a case of cat-scratch disease neuroretinitis for which systemic and ocular investigations proved the responsibility of Bartonella henselae. An 11-year-old boy was referred to the hospital in November 2002 for severe visual loss in the left eye over the preceding 2 weeks. At the same time, he also developed a flu-like illness. The best corrected acuity in the left eye was counting fingers at 30 cm. Posterior segment examination on the left eye showed an optic disk edema with papillary and peripapillary hemorrhages and serous retinal detachment, mild vitreous inflammation, and two litt

[Tularemia from a cat bite].

We report the first case in Norway of a man who developed ulceroglandular tularaemia following a cat bite. If after feline contact, patients develop skin and soft-tissue infections that fail to respond to therapy with penicillin, physicians should consider the possibility of tularaemia. Our patient was successfully treated with ciprofloxacin, which is effective against Francisella tularensis and most pathogens associated with feline infections. A greater awareness of infections following a cat bite is important for recognising this uncommon condition.

[Acute herpesvirus-gastritis in a cat].

Gastritis in cats is caused, among other things, by infectious agents, like bacteria, metazoic parasites or viruses. Herpesvirus-gastritis has not as yet been documented in cats. Therefore in this paper such a case will be described. In this case the mucous membrane of the stomach shows multifocal acute necroses with evidence of intranuclear inclusion bodies in epithelial cells of the gastric glands. By means of electron microscopy the causative virus can be specified as herpesvirus.

[Emergency CAT in stroke-why?].

INTRODUCTION: A stroke is considered to be a neurological emergency, and it is recommended that an immediate CAT scan should be done in all patients. However, its usefulness may be controversial in the early stages. OBJECTIVE: To show the diagnostic usefulness of early CAT scans following strokes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We made a retrospective study of a random sample of the requests for cranial CAT scans in suspected cerebrovascular disease between October 1998 and April 2000. We analyzed the diagnostic and therapeutic variations before and after CAT scans (pre CAT and post CAT moments). RE

Cat-scratch disease osteomyelitis.

We report on a patient who presented with osteomyelitis of a rib and adjacent abscess as a rare and atypical manifestation of cat-scratch disease. Radiographic findings showed an osteolytic lesion with adjacent mass. Biopsy, serology and polymerase chain reaction technique are essential for the final diagnosis. Prognosis is excellent with full recovery.

Aspergillus species cystitis in a cat.

A Persian male cat with a history of lower urinary tract disease was presented because of polydipsia, polyuria, constipation and nasal discharge. Ten weeks before admission, the cat had been treated for lower urinary tract disease by catheterisation and flushing of the bladder. The animal was thin, dehydrated, anaemic and azotaemic. Urine culture revealed Aspergillus species cystitis. Antibodies against Aspergillus nidulans were identified in serum. Fluconazole was administered orally (7.5 mg/kg, q 12 h) for 10 consecutive weeks. The azotaemia was resolved, the kidney concentrating ability was

Erythremic myelosis (AML6er) in a cat.

A 4-year-old male European domestic cat was presented with dysorexia, weakness and depression. Normocytic normochromic non-regenerative anaemia, leucopaenia and thrombocytopenia were detected. Rubriblasts were detected both in the blood and in the bone marrow. Tests of blood chemistry revealed no alterations of renal and hepatic function and a positive reaction to FeLV antigen was detected in the cat's serum. Neoplastic cells did not show positive to cytochemical reactions against granulocytes, monocytes and lymphocytes. According to haematological and bone marrow cytological findings, a diagn

Persistent atrial standstill in a cat.

A domestic shorthaired cat was presented with a 1-month history of cardiomegaly and recurrent chylothorax. The heart rate was 130 beats/min and no P waves were present on a surface electrocardiogram. Thoracic radiographs and an echocardiogram demonstrated severe biatrial dilatation, pleural effusion and restrictive pleural disease. Permanent atrial standstill was suspected. Pleurocentesis was performed and therapy was started with enalapril, frusemide and aspirin. Intracardiac electrograms revealed no atrial activity, and atrial pacing failed to elicit atrial or ventricular depolarisations. Th
