Nutrient accumulation below cattle feedlot pens in Kansas.

Waste excreted on cattle (Bos taurus) feedlot pens is a source of N and other nutrients that could potentially leach into soil and negatively impact local groundwater quality. Analyses of soil chemical and physical properties beneath active open air feedlot pens were conducted at four Kansas locations to determine nutrient accumulation. Results were compared to estimated nutrient deposition, and remediation implications were considered. The surface concentrations of NH(4)-N, organic N, organic C, Cl(-), and extractable P were elevated at the surface and rapidly decreased with depth to 1.0 m. A…

Antigen-specific human polyclonal antibodies from hyperimmunized cattle.

Antigen-specific human polyclonal antibodies (hpAbs), produced by hyperimmunization, could be useful for treating many human diseases. However, yields from available transgenic mice and transchromosomic (Tc) cattle carrying human immunoglobulin loci are too low for therapeutic applications. We report a Tc bovine system that produces large yields of hpAbs. Tc cattle were generated by transferring a human artificial chromosome vector carrying the entire unrearranged, human immunoglobulin heavy (hIGH) and kappa-light (hIGK) chain loci to bovine fibroblasts in which two endogenous bovine IgH chain…

Larynx-associated lymphoid tissue (LALT) in young cattle.

This paper describes the presence of lymphoid tissue in the mucosa of the bovine larynx. A total of 15 bovine larynges were examined both macroscopically after tissue fixation in acetic acid and microscopically using histology. It was found that no paraepiglottic tonsil was present in cattle, although a few lymphoid follicles were present in the mucosa at the base of the epiglottis. This result is in accordance with previous reports. In contrast, numerous lymphoid follicles were seen in the mucosa of the epiglottis and the corniculate processes of the arytenoid cartilages. This suggests that l…

Nitrogen dioxide (silo gas) poisoning in dairy cattle.

Toxic silo gases are a potential danger to livestock housed in close proximity to roughage silos. These gases, such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2), may be produced during the early stages of (maize and grass) silage making. In humans, inhalation of these gases causes a condition known as 'Silo Filler's Disease' (SFD), which is a recognized occupational hazard for workers in upright forage silos in many countries. NO2 accumulates on top of silage, is inhaled by workers, and reacts with water on the airway surfaces to form nitrous acid, which damages the lung and causes pulmonary oedema, bronchioliti

Pedigree analysis of eight Spanish beef cattle breeds.

The genetic structure of eight Spanish autochthonous populations (breeds) of beef cattle were studied from pedigree records. The populations studied were: Alistana and Sayaguesa (minority breeds), Avileña - Negra Ibérica and Morucha ("dehesa" breeds, with a scarce incidence of artificial insemination), and mountain breeds, including Asturiana de los Valles, Asturiana de la Montaña and Pirenaica, with extensive use of AI. The Bruna dels Pirineus breed possesses characteristics which make its classification into one of the former groups difficult. There was a large variation between breeds both …

Digit amputation in cattle: 85 cases (1971-1990).

Medical records of 83 cattle, which had 1 or more digit amputations performed at Kansas State University and The Ohio State University veterinary hospitals between 1971 and 1990, were reviewed. Signalment, duration of lameness, prior treatment, digit involved, and pathologic condition were evaluated. Owners were contacted with regard to the animal's duration in the herd after amputation and reason for exiting the herd, level of production attained, and degree of lameness. The animal was judged to have a good, fair, or poor recovery on the basis of this information. Septic arthritis of the dist…

Prickly paddy melon (Cucumis myriocarpus) poisoning of cattle.

Twenty-six Hereford heifers died after eating mostly ripe fruit of Cucumis myriocarpus growing in a fallowed cultivation paddock. Four affected cattle were dehydrated and apparently had abdominal pain. Necropsy of three revealed intense congestion with haemorrhage of the alimentary tract, numerous C. myriocarpus seeds in ruminal contents, pulmonary congestion and oedema and, in two, swollen livers. Midzonal swelling and vacuolation of hepatocytes occurred in these two. C. myriocarpus fruit (83% by weight ripe) were dosed to two calves at 60 g wet weight/kg live weight. Both collapsed with tach…

Poultry waste associated type C botulism in cattle.

Botulism in UK cattle has been confirmed by demonstrating type C botulinum toxin in sera from affected animals. Evidence is presented indicating the source of intoxication to be poultry carcasses containing type C Clostridium botulinum and its toxin. The organism was also found in poultry litter and in alimentary tract samples from slaughtered animals. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Generalized glycogenosis in beef shorthorn cattle--heterozygote detection.

A preliminary study of acidic alpha-glucosidase in a variety of tissues was carried out in an attempt to develop a test which might be used to detect individuals heterozygous for the genetype associated with generalized glycogenosis in beef Shorthorn cattle. Of the tissues readily available peripheral lymphocytes were chosen as being likely to be the most suitable. It was concluded that, when coupled with genealogical information, assays of alpha-glucosidase in extracts of lymphocytes were useful for identifying heterozygous individuals with a reasonably high degree of probability.

Co-circulation of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus and spotted fever group Rickettsia in cattle and ticks from cattle in Kosovo.

BACKGROUND: Changes in climate and land use as well as expanding livestock production around the world, including southeastern Europe, result in growing public health risk of tick-borne pathogens. Cattle and other livestock serve as important hosts sustaining tick populations as well as tick-borne zoonotic and animal pathogens. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and co-circulation of the spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia spp. in ticks from cattle and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in cattle in Kosovo. METHODS: Ticks from pastured cattle in the Malishevë district,…

Widespread movement of invasive cattle fever ticks (Rhipicephalus microplus) in southern Texas leads to shared local infestations on cattle and deer.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is a highly-invasive tick that transmits the cattle parasites (Babesia bovis and B. bigemina) that cause cattle fever. R. microplus and Babesia are endemic in Mexico and ticks persist in the United States inside a narrow tick eradication quarantine area (TEQA) along the Rio Grande. This containment area is threatened by unregulated movements of illegal cattle and wildlife like white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus). METHODS: Using 11 microsatellite loci we genotyped 1,247 R. microplus from 63 Texas collections, including outbreak infest…

Serological and molecular surveys of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina among native cattle and cattle imported from Thailand in Hue, Vietnam.

Serum and DNA from blood samples collected from Vietnamese yellow cattle (n=101) and cattle imported from Thailand (n=54) at a Vietnamese slaughter house were screened for Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina infections by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and PCR. The positive rates determined by ELISA (B. bovis and B. bigemina) or PCR (B. bigemina) in the Vietnamese cattle were significantly higher than those found in Thai cattle. Some PCR-positive Vietnamese animals were ELISA-negative, whereas all PCR-positive Thai cattle were ELISA-positive, suggesting that the animals were infected…
