The patient was a 68-year-old man who presented with a progressively enlarging mass in the left breast. Breast ultrasonography revealed an irregular hypoechoic mass in region E of the left breast. A core needle biopsy (CNB) revealed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) showed no abnormal uptake in organs outside the breast, and bone marrow examination revealed no involvement. The patient was diagnosed with primary DLBCL in the breast. Surgical resection was chosen for both a definitive diagnosis and because the patient experienced pai

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly prevalent human disorder with extensive clinical and genetic heterogeneity. One notable ASD subgroup that often manifest with more severe symptoms comprises individuals with an enlarged head (macrocephaly), often accompanied by an enlarged brain (megalencephaly). Here, we focus on the macrocephalic ASD subgroup and discuss the biological processes that may underlie brain overgrowth in individuals with ASD, including excess neurogenesis or gliogenesis, decreased cell death, neuronal hypertrophy, and elevated myelination. We also discuss the signaling a

Growing teratoma syndrome (GTS) is an uncommon post-chemotherapy event in non-seminomatous germ cell tumors and presents as enlarging masses composed of mature teratoma despite normalized markers. As systemic therapy is generally ineffective, treatment focuses on surgical excision. We report the case of a 30-year-old male with an immature teratoma of the right testis who, after completing chemotherapy with normalized tumor markers, developed enlarging lymph node masses histologically confirmed as mature teratoma, consistent with GTS. This case highlights the importance of maintaining a high in

An 80-year-old woman was found to have a 40-mm depressed-type gastric cancer. Computed tomography showed multiple lymph node enlargement, including paraaortic lymph nodes. The extent of lymph node enlargement was significant compared with the depth of the primary lesion. We conducted distal gastrectomy, D2 lymph node dissection, and a paraaortic lymph node biopsy. Microscopically, the tumor was diagnosed as mucosal cancer. In the dissected lymph nodes, noncaseating granuloma was found without metastasis of adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical staining using Propionibacterium acnes-specific anti

We report a case of periaortic lymphoma mimicking Stanford type B acute aortic dissection treated for impending rupture by thoracic endovascular aortic repair. Although no endoleak was detected, the aneurysm enlarged continuously. Repeat computed tomography scans showed that an aortic aneurysm-like structure around the stent graft had enlarged irregularly. Histopathological examination revealed diffuse large B-cell malignant lymphoma. Post-chemotherapy, the aneurysm-like structure disappeared without any fistula or rupture. In open surgery, differentiating between aneurysms and malignancy is e

A 76-year-old man presented with a two-month history of angina pectoris. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a serial enlargement of the supraclavicular and mediastinal lymph nodes compressing the heart, pulmonary artery and aorta. CT angiography (CTA) showed stenosis of the coronary arteries as a result of compression by the enlarged lymph nodes. First-pass contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at rest revealed a perfusion defect, thus indicating myocardial ischemia. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma was diagnosed and multidrug combination chemotherapy led to prompt improvement

A 40's woman was hospitalized with cervical lymph node enlargement. Laboratory examinations showed elevated serum bile duct enzymes and the presence of anti-mitochondrial antibody. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography showed enlargement of not only perihepatic lymph nodes, but also axillary and cervical lymph nodes. FDG-PET showed intense uptake concordant with these lymph nodes. We performed endoscopic ultrasonographic fine-needle aspiration biopsy of a perihepatic lymph node, but detected no malignant cells. We then performed liver biopsy, and obtained a histological diagnosed p

Preoperative tumor staging in patients with known or suspected non-small cell lung cancer is generally performed using contrast enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) (including the adrenal glands). Abdominal CT is generally unnecessary, given the low frequency of isolated liver metastases. The role of MRI is limited, and it is used mainly as a problem solving tool in certain specific situations. A CT showing no mediastinal lymph node enlargement usually oviates preoperative mediastinal lymph node sampling, with certain exceptions. If enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes are demonstrated at CT, t

OBJECTIVE: Capillary malformation (CM) occurs sporadically and is associated with Sturge-Weber syndrome. The somatic mosaic mutation in GNAQ (c.548G>A, p.R183Q) is enriched in endothelial cells (ECs) in skin CM and Sturge-Weber syndrome brain CM. Our goal was to investigate how the mutant Gαq (G-protein αq subunit) alters EC signaling and disrupts capillary morphogenesis. Approach and Results: We used lentiviral constructs to express p.R183Q or wild-type GNAQ in normal human endothelial colony forming cells (EC-R183Q and EC-WT, respectively). EC-R183Q constitutively activated PLC (phospholipas

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an immune-mediated fibroinflammatory condition affecting multiple organs; however, the involvement of skin lesions is rare. We herein report a 65-year-old man who presented with pruritic punctate purpura on both legs and elevated liver enzyme levels. Computed tomography showed enlargement of the pancreas and thickening of the bile duct wall. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography showed diffuse irregular constriction of the main pancreatic duct, stricture of the lower common bile duct, and dilation after confluent stricture. The diagnosis of splenomegaly due to drugs is based on a recent history of exposure to a drug before the spleen enlargement. The purpose of this paper is to review studies of the literature on drugs that may induce to splenomegaly. Drugs may provoke the enlargement of spleen by direct effect in splenic cells or as a side effect of disturbances in other organs, mainly liver and haematoimmunologic system. Some drugs provoke severe haemolysis associated with splenomegaly. Another cause of spleen increasing in size is the venous congestion due to liver disturbance with portal vein occlusion. All t

Malignant lymphoma developed in a 65-year-old man with type 1 neurofibromatosis (von Recklinghausen disease). The patient visited the hospital for evaluation of generalized lymphadenopathy. A physical examination discovered café au lait spots, neurofibromas, and generalized enlargement of the superficial lymph nodes. A computed tomogram demonstrated enlarged mediastinal and para-aortic lymph nodes in the abdomen. Biopsy specimens from the right side of the patient's neck were examined, and a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (diffuse mixed type, T cell type) was made. Although the patient ac

Primary splenic diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PS-DLBCL) is an extremely rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It typically presents with abdominal pain and a rapidly enlarging mass, often accompanied by B symptoms. Here, we present a rare presentation of PS-DLBCL in a 54-year-old woman who experienced splenomegaly. A CT scan of her abdomen revealed an enlarged spleen measuring 12 x 15 x 14 cm with a hypodense lesion. Confirmation of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma was obtained through a splenic core biopsy. A subsequent positron emission tomography scan showed a large hypermetabolic and centrall

BACKGROUND: Most lymphomas that involve the tonsil are large B cell lymphomas. Large B-cell lymphoma is a high grade malignancy which progresses rapidly. Tonsillar lymphoma usually presents as either a unilaterally enlarged palatine tonsil or as an ulcerative and fungating lesion over the tonsillar area. Small lymphocytic lymphomas (SLL) of the Waldeyer's ring are uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 41-year-old male who presented with a ten-year history of snoring. Physical examination revealed smooth bilateral symmetrically enlarged tonsils without abnormal surface change or cervical ly

Bacterial lectins are typically multivalent and bind noncovalently to specific carbohydrates on host tissues to facilitate bacterial adhesion. Here, we analyzed the effects of two fucose-binding lectins, BambL from Burkholderia ambifaria and LecB from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, on specific signaling pathways in B cells. We found that these bacterial lectins induced B cell activation, which, in vitro, was dependent on the cell surface expression of the B cell antigen receptor (BCR) and its co-receptor CD19, as well as on spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) activity. The resulting release of intracellular

In autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), renal cyst development and enlargement, as well as cell growth, are associated with alterations in several pathways, including cAMP and activator protein 1 (AP1) signalling. However, the precise mechanism by which these molecules stimulate cell proliferation is not yet fully understood. We now show by microarray analysis, luciferase assay, mutagenesis, and chromatin immunoprecipitation that CREB and AP1 contribute to increased expression of the amphiregulin gene, which codifies for an epidermal growth factor-like peptide, in ADPKD cystic

Notch signaling controls numerous key cellular processes including cell fate determination and cell proliferation. Its malfunction has been linked to many developmental abnormalities and human disorders. Overactivation of Notch signaling is shown to be oncogenic. Retention of excess Notch protein in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) can lead to altered Notch signaling and cell fate, but the mechanism is not well understood. In this study, we show that V5-tagged or untagged exogenous Notch is retained in the ER when overexpressed in fly tissues. Furthermore, we show that Notch retention in the ER

Mutations in the chromodomain helicase DNA-binding 8 (CHD8) gene are a frequent cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While its phenotypic spectrum often encompasses macrocephaly, implicating cortical abnormalities, how CHD8 haploinsufficiency affects neurodevelopmental is unclear. Here, employing human cerebral organoids, we find that CHD8 haploinsufficiency disrupted neurodevelopmental trajectories with an accelerated and delayed generation of, respectively, inhibitory and excitatory neurons that yields, at days 60 and 120, symmetrically opposite expansions in their proportions. Lung nodules are common diagnostic challenges in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and solid organ transplantation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a known cause of lung abscess in these patients, but its ability to persist for months in a quiescent lung nodule and later cause recurrent infection is not well known or documented. A patient with a history of acute pre-B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia had enlargement and cavitation of a small right upper lobe pulmonary nodule 10 months after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The nodule was the remnant of a presumed P. aeruginosa se

A variant of the PTPN22-encoded Lyp phosphatase (Lyp620W) confers risk for autoimmune disease, but the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. We show here that mice expressing the Lyp variant homolog Pep619W manifest thymic and splenic enlargement accompanied by increases in T-cell number, activation and positive selection and in dendritic- and B-cell activation. Although Ptpn22 (Pep) transcript levels were comparable in Pep619W and wild-type Pep619R mice, Pep protein levels were dramatically reduced in the mutant mice, with Pep619W protein being more rapidly degraded and showi
