Retrospective survey on laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the cirrhotic patient.

Cholelitiasis is a common disease in patients with liver cirrhosis, mainly due to intravascular haemolysis and functional alterations of the gallbladder. In Child A and B cirrhotics laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) demonstrated the same advantages and safety as in the non cirrhotic patients. On the contrary, indications for surgery in Child C patients should be carefully evaluated. Nevertheless, the current number of patients with Child C cirrhosis submitted to LC is too low to extrapolate definitive data. Here we report our observations on a retrospective case series of LCs performed for sym

Predictors and Correlates of Positive Urine Drug Screening in a Retrospective Cohort Analysis of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatients Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Youth substance use is associated with significant psychological, neurological, and medical complications. Risk factors for substance use among children and adolescents in the general population include peer and/or parental substance use, certain psychiatric illnesses (eg, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, depression), and history of maltreatment. Co-occurring substance use and psychiatric illness have been associated with increased suicidality, but few prior studies have characterized substance use among child/adolescent inpatients. As such, it remains uncle

Cardioneuroablation for successful treatment of symptomatic bradycardia in a 12-year-old child after a 6-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Cardioneuroablation (CNA) is recognized as a promising therapeutic option for adults with severe symptomatic bradycardia caused by excessive vagal tone. However, no pediatric cases have been reported to date. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of CNA in children. METHODS: A 12-year-old male patient was hospitalized with symptoms of fatigue, palpitations, and syncope for more than 2 months, and was definitively diagnosed with functional sinoatrial node dysfunction by using a 12-lead electrocardiogram, 24-h Holter monitoring, loading dose of

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic liver disease is one of the most frequently diagnosed liver problems in the hospitalized patients in most tertiary care hospitals all over the world .The diagnosis of alcoholic liver disease is most of the time clinical. The AST/ALT ratio is a useful and reliable biochemical marker of liver injury due to alcohol. Whether the value of AST/ALT ratio correlates with clinical severity has not been studied. OBJECTIVES: To study values of AST/ALT ratio in correlation with clinical severity of illness due to alcoholic liver disease using Child-Pugh's grading. METHODS: This is

Long QT interval syndrome type 2 caused by a new missense mutation of KCNH2 gene: A case report.

RATIONALE: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) constitutes an inherited cardiac. Studies indicate that untreated LQTS carries a high mortality rate, and up to 20% of sudden infant death syndrome cases are associated with this condition. With active therapeutic intervention, the disease mortality rate can be reduced to 1%. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a 10-year-old male patient who has a sudden loss of consciousness. The electrocardiogram showed the QT interval was prolonged, which means LQTS. The results of genetic testing found heterozygous mutations, c.1943 G > C, p.Gly 648 Ala in exon 7 of the KCNH2 ge

OBJECTIVE: To determine predictors related to the circumstances of the injury (COI) for distinguishing abusive versus non-abusive injuries. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Children younger than 3-years-old who were hospitalized with either a head injury or a fracture and evaluated by the child abuse

Prevalence of cryptococcal antigenemia in hospitalized patients with liver cirrhosis.

The benefits of screening for cryptococcal antigenemia and of preemptive antifungal treatment in HIV-infected patients have been proven. Liver cirrhosis is an important risk factor for cryptococcal infections. Cryptococcal infections are rapidly fatal in patients with liver cirrhosis, especially when diagnosis is delayed. However, screening for cryptococcal antigenemia has not been investigated in these patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of cryptococcal antigenemia in hospitalized patients with liver cirrhosis. This prospective study was conducted at Seoul Nation

Pulmonary manifestation of immunoglobulin G4-related disease in a 7-year-old immunodeficient boy with Epstein-Barr virus infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a multiorgan fibroinflammatory condition with lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates containing abundant IgG4-positive plasma cells. The immunopathogenesis of the disease and the potential role of triggering autoantigens or infectious factors have not been clearly defined. Immunoglobulin G4-related lung disease is a new and emerging condition in pediatric patients and to date, there have been only two reports regarding pulmonary manifestation of IgG4-RD in children recently published. This is the first report of IgG4-related lung disease in an

Suicide in children and young adolescents: a 25-year database on suicides from Northern Finland.

Despite the large amount of research on adolescent suicidality, there are few detailed studies illustrating the characteristics of child and adolescent completed suicide. The study sample included all 58 suicides among children and adolescents (<18 years) occurring in the province of Oulu in Finland between 1988 and 2012.
