A survey of ectoparasites in Gunung Stong Forest Reserve, Kelantan, Malaysia.

A survey of ticks and other ectoparasites was carried out during a national biodiversity scientific expedition at Gunung Stong Forest Reserve, Kelantan, Malaysia from 23-29 May 2003. A total of 272 animals comprised of 12 species of birds, 21 species of bats, 7 species of rodents and 2 species of insects were examined for ticks and other ectoparasites. From these animals, 5 species in 4 genera of ticks; 7 species in 2 families of Mesostigmatid mites and 5 species of chiggers were collected. Among the ectoparasites found were Ixodes granulatus and Leptotrombidium deliense, which are of known me

Intensity control during target approach in echolocating bats; stereotypical sensori-motor behaviour in Daubenton's bats, Myotis daubentonii.

When approaching a prey target, bats have been found to decrease the intensity of their emitted echolocation pulses, called intensity compensation. In this paper we examine whether intensity compensation in the echolocation of bats is flexible or stereotyped. We recorded the echolocation calls of Daubenton's bats (Myotis daubentonii) while the animals attacked targets of different dimensions. Myotis daubentonii reduced the peak sound pressure level emitted by about 4dB for each halving of distance, irrespective of the target presented (mealworms and two different sizes of spheres). The absolut

Distinctive cranial and cervical innervation of wing muscles: new evidence for bat monophyly.

The traditional view that Old World fruit bats (Megachiroptera) and insect bats (Microchiroptera) are closely related has been challenged by claims that Megachiroptera are the sister group to flying lemurs (Dermoptera) or Primates. We found that the specialized muscles of the rostral part of the wing in Microchiroptera and Megachiroptera receive double innervation by both the facial nerve and cervical spinal nerves, suggesting that bats are monophyletic. Innervation by the facial nerve also occurs in Dermoptera and suggests that bats and Dermoptera share a common ancestor that had wings.

Recent data on the epidemiology and prophylaxis of human rabies in France.

Rabies is an animal disease which is transmitted to man only by accident, most often through the bite (more rarely after scratches or licks of mucosa) of a rabid animal, domestic or wild. A good knowledge of the epizootiology of animal rabies is therefore necessary to establish, on solid grounds, the prophylaxis of human rabies. Inter-human transmission of rabies being an exceptional event which will be considered separately, the epidemiology of human rabies mainly studies the sources and circumstances of human exposure to rabid animals, which differ according to the epizootiology of animal ra

Pathogenesis of rabies virus from a Danish bat (Eptesicus serotinus): neuronal changes suggestive of spongiosis.

Rabies virus strains isolated from a European bat (Eptesicus serotinus) in Denmark (DBV), a North American big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) in New York State (NY-bat), and a human in South Africa (Duvenhage strain (DUV-1) were studied by using a panel of monoclonal antibodies and by inoculating mice, cats, and dogs. The ten Danish virus isolates from the same bat species reacted identically with a panel of monoclonal antibodies. Immunofluorescence, monoclonal antibody, and histopathologic studies showed that the Danish bat isolates were similar to Duvenhage, and to some degree, to classical ra

Pulmonary histoplasmosis associated with exploration of a bat cave.

Approximately 14 days after exploring a limestone cave in northcentral Florida in February 1973, an 18-year-old female developed a respiratory illness with pronounced shortness of breath and cyanosis. The following day, an 18-year-old male presented to the hospital with similar complaints. The association of illness with their recent caving experience prompted further epidemiologic investigation. Twenty-nine members of a church-sponsored youth group explored the implicated cave. Twenty-three of them later became ill with complaints of cough, afternoon fever and sweats, chest discomfort, and dy

Viral Metagenomic Analysis of Bat Fly Pupae.

Bats are important reservoirs of zoonotic viruses, yet the role of their obligate ectoparasites, particularly bat flies, in viral maintenance and transmission remains poorly understood. Although viral sequences have been detected in adult bat flies, vertical transmission to their offspring has not been investigated. Here, we present the first metagenomic analysis of bat fly pupae to assess transgenerational viral persistence. Eighty pupae associated with a large Miniopterus schreibersii colony in Hungary were analyzed by next-generation sequencing. We generated more than 69 million reads and o

Filovirus Surveillance in Communities Bordering Equatorial Guinea, Marburg Outbreak, Cameroon, 2023.

After the 2023 Equatorial Guinea Marburg virus (MARV) outbreak, surveillance of 181 persons in southern Cameroon detected MARV antibodies in 3 persons and Ebola virus antibodies in 7. Testing of 289 captured bats, including 158 Rousettus aegyptiacus bats, did not detect MARV RNA. Enhanced surveillance for regional filovirus spillover risks is warranted.

A paired analysis of mercury among non-invasive tissues in Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) to inform conservation monitoring.

Contaminants can harm wildlife. However, measuring wildlife exposure to contaminants can be challenging due to accessibility of species and/or sampling tissue matrices needed to assess wildlife health risks. For example, in bats and other taxa that use roosts, collecting feces under colonies minimizes disturbance to species of conservation concern, but fecal contaminant concentrations may not directly correlate with tissue contaminant concentrations. Thus, there is a need for quantifying contaminant exposure relationships between sample matrices for initial risk assessments to address wildlife

[Bombali virus (Filoviridae: Orthoebolavirus: Orthoebolavirus bombaliense)].

INTRODUCTION: Members of genus Orthoebolavirus of family Filoviridae cause severe hemorrhagic fever in humans with high fatality rates (up to 90%). The first outbreaks of disease caused by the members of genus Orthoebolavirus were registered in 1976 in Zaire and Sudan. The outbreaks of disease caused by the members of genus Orthoebolavirus occur regularly in Africa. The largest outbreak (for all history of monitoring) happened in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra-Leone in 2013-2016. During this outbreak, the cases of disease importation in non-endemic regions were registered. The foci of circulation of

Comparative genomics provides insights into chromosomal evolution and immunological adaptation in horseshoe bats.

Horseshoe bats are natural hosts of zoonotic viruses, yet the genetic basis of their antiviral immunity is poorly understood. Here we generated two new chromosomal-level genome assemblies for horseshoe bat species (Rhinolophus) and three close relatives, and show that, during their diversification, horseshoe bats underwent extensive chromosomal rearrangements and gene expansions linked to segmental duplications. These expansions have generated new adaptive variations in type I interferons and the interferon-stimulated gene ANXA2R, which potentially enhance antiviral states, as suggested by our

Mapping the Potential Risk of Coronavirus Spillovers in a Global Hotspot.

Bats harbor approximately a third of known mammal viruses, including the recent coronaviruses SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 that likely spilled over in Asia. As spillover risk increases due to habitat loss and fragmentation, we identified potential zoonotic spillover and pandemic risk hotspots by combining landscape characteristics with the diversity of competent hosts, with horseshoe bats (genus Rhinolophus) used as proxies for zoonotic pathogen reservoir hosts. We estimated the risk of coronavirus emergence in South and Southeast Asia by integrating Rhinolophid species distributions, forest frag
