Transcallosal Interforniceal Approach for a Large Choroid Plexus Tumor in a 4-Month-Old Boy: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Tumors in the third ventricle constitute a challenge for the neurosurgeon, regardless of the chosen approach. The additional risk of severe blood loss in the pediatric population, specially for choroid plexus tumors, which are the most common ventricular tumors in children, adds a significant challenge in these cases. Therefore, a careful selection of the approach in addition to surgical technique is crucial for a favorable outcome. In this video, we discuss the approach selected for the treatment of a large choroid plexus tumor in a 4-mo-old male and highlight the surgical technique chosen fo

Secondary Diffuse Choroid Plexus B-Cell Lymphoma: Case Report and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) relapse is an uncommon complication of diffuse large B cell lymphoma and is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. It is becoming a more prevalent pathologic entity in the rituximab era. Our case provides insight into the pathophysiology, diagnosis, prevention, and management of secondary intraventricular CNS lymphomas. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report an unusual case of a 64-year-old man who presented with an isolated secondary CNS lymphoma involving the choroid plexus in a diffuse pattern. He initially presented with obstructive hydrocephalu

Case Report: Importance of B-scan Ultrasonography for the Detection of Choroidal Melanoma.

SIGNIFICANCE: This case highlights the importance of using ultrasonography to evaluate an eye that has no clear view of the fundus. PURPOSE: Uveal melanoma stems from melanocytes found in the iris, ciliary body, and choroid, and it is the most common primary intraocular malignancy found in adults. The lesion is identified predominantly via fundus biomicroscopy and binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. The authors present a unique case where visual evaluation of the fundus was not possible, and ultrasonography was used to assess the retina and choroid. CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old Hispanic man wit

Choroidal melanoma: a review and case report.

BACKGROUND: Choroidal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults. The ongoing Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study (COMS) was designed to provide specific answers for the management of medium and large choroidal melanomas. The present consensus among authorities is that small (< 3 mm thick) suspected choroidal melanomas can be conservatively managed with periodic observation for evidence of growth. CASE REPORT: Dilated fundus examination of a 68-year-old man revealed a pigmented uveal lesion straddling the ora serrata inferiorly at 5:30 in the right eye. It measured 5

Occult foreign body simulating a choroidal melanoma with extrascleral extension.

A 62-year-old man was noted on routine examination to have a dark lesion in the peripheral fundus of the right eye and a corresponding dark scleral mass. The lesion was initially suspected to be a choroidal melanoma with extrascleral extension. The patient denied having ocular trauma. Orbital x-rays and ultrasonography, however, demonstrated the lesion to be an occult transcleral metallic foreign body. An occult foreign body should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a small choroidal or ciliary body melanoma with extrascleral extension.

[Arteriovenous malformations of the choroid plexus--a case report].

The authors described a case of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the choroid plexus, and presented a review of literature. This 40-year-old male experienced a sudden onset of severe headache and vomiting on February 5th 1982. At the other hospital, CT scans revealed marked intraventricular hemorrhage, however his general condition was relatively good without a loss of consciousness, motor weakness and sensory disturbance. After about a month of conservative treatment, he was transferred to the Kochi Medical School Hospital. On admission, he had shown no neurological deficit except for sligh

A pigmented choroid plexus carcinoma: histochemical and ultrastructural studies.

A large tumor of the left lateral ventricle in a 3 1/2 year old male was diagnostic of malignant choroid plexus papilloma (choroid plexus carcinoma) as observed histologically. Focal neoplastic epithelial cells contained yellow-brown pigment which was not entirely compatible with melanin by histochemical techniques. Ultrastructurally, the tumor had definite evidence of choroid plexus origin. The neoplastic cells contained electron-dense and lamellar bodies, as well as structures of intermediate type. Premelanosomes were not observed. Thus there was no evidence for neural crest melanin. It is s

Surgical removal of bilateral papillomas of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricles with resolution of hydrocephalus. Case report.

The authors report a patient with bilateral papillomas of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricles with documentation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) hypersecretion causing hydrocephalus. Special attention is given to the large volume of CSF produced by these tumors (removal of one tumor reduced CSF outflow by one-half) and to the fact that CSF diversion was not required after both tumors were removed. Since tumor removal alone was sufficient to stop the progression of hydrocephalus, we feel that this case supports the concept that elevated CSF production by itself is sufficient to cause hydr

Bacillary layer detachment with malignant choroidal tumors: a case series.

PURPOSE: To study the incidence and characteristics of bacillary layer detachment (BALAD) occurring with the two most common choroidal malignancies, choroidal metastasis and choroidal melanoma. METHODS: A retrospective multicentric record analysis. Eyes with a diagnosis of choroidal melanoma or choroidal metastasis that had good-quality fundus photography and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans of the macular and tumor regions allowing for delineation of the retinal layers were included for analysis. Qualitative image evaluation was done by two independent graders for the
