An analysis of the vascular injuries and attempted resuscitation surrounding the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr was the most prominent civil rights leader in the United States in the 1960s. He was shot by an assassin in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. After the shooting he was taken to a local hospital where he had an unsuccessful resuscitation for a right subclavian artery transection. Despite the fact that the circumstances around the assassination have been frequently reported and reviewed in the past 50 years, the specific vascular care of the traumatic injury has not been analyzed. This paper reviews the medical aspects of the King assassination and the management of his

Gunshot wound causing complete spinal cord injury without mechanical violation of spinal axis: Case report with review of literature.

Penetrating spine injury (PSI) forms the third most common cause of spine injury, only next to road traffic accidents and fall. Gunshot wound (GSW) forms the major bulk of PSI. Due to easy availability of firearms and antisocial behavior, GSW which were predominant in military population is now increasingly seen in civilized society. Here, we present a detail case review of unique case of civilian GSW indirectly causing complete spinal cord injury due to shock wave generated by the bullet, along with its systematic management.

[Symptom validity assessment and forensic evaluation of cognitive and mental disorders].

Continuing from two previous reviews in this journal (Fortschr Neurol Psychiatr 2002; 70: 126 - 138; 2007; 75: 140 - 154), modern methods and research on symptom validity assessment are presented, with special emphasis on civil forensic examinations. In spite of continuing resistance from many professionals, symptom validity assessment is gradually gaining ground in German-speaking countries, but there is a developmental lag in European countries as a whole, as compared to developments in North America. Major research lines are presented, and questionnaire measures for the detection of a negat

Battlefield trauma, traumatic shock and consequences: war-related advances in critical care.

Over the course of history, while the underlying causes for wars have remained few, mechanisms of inflicting injury and our ability to treat the consequent wounds have dramatically changed. Success rates in treating war-related injuries have improved greatly, although the course of progress has not proceeded linearly. From Homer's Iliad to the Civil War to Vietnam, there have been significant improvements in mortality, despite a concurrent increase in the lethality of weapons. These improvements have occurred primarily as a result of progress in three key areas: management of wounds, treatment

Medicolegal aspects of neurotology.

In their professional capacity, physicians interact with the legal profession in a variety of ways. The interaction occurs most often in the situation where an individual suffering from a bodily injury seeks the recovery of monetary benefits through the legal system. This article reviews the manner in which physicians are contacted by attorneys in connection with workers' compensation cases and civil tort cases. It will also set forth various definitions of disability and contrast those definitions with the concept of impairment as that term is used in the medical profession. Suggestions for p

A brief journey into medical care and disease in ancient Egypt.

Ancient Egypt was one of the greatest civilizations to have arisen, becoming the cradle of scientific enquiry and social development over 3 millennia; undoubtedly its knowledge of medicine has been vastly underestimated. Few artefacts survive which describe the medical organization, but from the extent of the diseases afflicting that ancient populus there would have been much to study. Evidence from papyri, tomb bas reliefs and the writings of historians of antiquity tell of an intense interest in the sciences, humanities and medicine born of an educated society which had overcome the supersti…

Grandmultiparity: a continuing problem in developing countries.

Four hundred and thirty-one grandmultiparae and 1,070 less parous women who delivered at Civil Hospital, Karachi over a 2-year period (Jan. 1982 to Dec. 1983) have been reviewed retrospectively. The purpose was to estimate the incidence of grandmultiparity at this hospital and compare the incidence of obstetric and medical complications in the grandmultiparae with the less parous women. A higher incidence of anaemia, spontaneous abortions, abruptio placentae, postpartum haemorrhage, spontaneous uterine rupture and fetal loss was found in the grandmultiparae compared with other parturients. "Their body is their territory": Reproductive autonomy and governance by omission in Peru.

Drawing on 22 in-depth interviews with government officials, civil society leaders, multilateral and community-based actors, we examine how reproductive autonomy is shaped, constrained, and contested within Peru's sexual and reproductive health (SRH) system. The findings point to a cascade of constraints across three levels. At the macro-level, political avoidance, conservative influence, and the enduring legacy of Fujimori-era forced sterilizations have produced sustained silence around SRH, limiting leadership, accountability, and investment. At the meso-level, this silence translates into i

Legal, ethical and moral dilemma of human cloning: the conflict between technological progress and human dignity.

Human cloning involves creating a genetically identical copy of a human cell, tissue, or embryo. That is, human reproductive cloning, producing a genetic copy of an existing person, has never been successfully done and remains globally banned or restricted. While there is no scientific evidence of successful human reproductive cloning, biotechnology combines cloning methods with genetic engineering to drive advancements in medical research and disease treatment. With the development of genetic engineering and cloning technologies, human cloning, as a possible future phenomenon, has sparked ext

The importance of socioeconomic factors on antenatal identification of small for gestational age pregnancies: Exploring health inequalities in the antenatal care in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: Unidentified small for gestational age (SGA) pregnancies have an increased risk for stillbirth. The risk of stillbirth is increased in women born abroad or with low socioeconomic status (SES). The aim of this study was to evaluate potential inequalities in antenatal screening and identification of SGA by examining whether a foreign background or indicators of low SES were associated with unidentified SGA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a register-based cohort study of all pregnancies delivered in Stockholm in the year 2014 and 2017, including 5487 SGA pregnancies. Data from mate

Work context and drinking behavior in the French public service: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorders (AUD) are a major public health problem. Among the working population, alcohol is the most frequently used psychoactive substance, as well as the most inappropriately used. Alcohol consumption reduces the worker's psychophysical integrity, leads to an increase in inappropriate behavior, accidents and injuries, and affects the safety and health of other workers. Thus, the workplace must play an essential role in prevention. Particularly in France, in the civil service, a specific professional sector made up of many professionals exposed to stress, the prevent

Figurative aspects suggestive of infectious diseases in the ceramic pots of the pre-Columbian Moche culture. Analysis of the ceramics collection in the Larco Museum of Lima, Peru.

The historical-medical and anthropological studies, regarding Mesoamerica and South America, have been mainly focused on the great empires (Inca, Atzec, Maya), while other civilizations have been less investigated and only recently are gaining interest. In general, the paleopathological research provides interesting data to know the type of nutrition and the general environmental conditions as well as to point out some ritual mutilation practices, which were relatively frequent in the pre-Columbian cultures. A lot of civilizations flourished in the South America before the arrival of the Spani…

Tuberculosis and HIV are the leading causes of adult death in northwest Ethiopia: evidence from verbal autopsy data of Dabat health and demographic surveillance system, 2007-2013.

BACKGROUND: Reliable data on causes of death form the basis for building evidence on health policy, planning, monitoring, and evaluation. In Ethiopia, the majority of deaths occur at home and civil registration systems are not yet functional. The main objective of verbal autopsy (VA) is to describe the causes of death at the community or population level where civil registration and death certification systems are weak and where most people die at home without having had contact with the health system. METHODS: Causes of death were classified and prepared based on the International Classifica

Long-Term Outcome of Mustard/Senning Correction for Transposition of the Great Arteries in Sweden and Denmark.

BACKGROUND: The atrial switch operation, the Mustard or Senning operation, for the transposition of the great arteries (TGA) was introduced in the late 1950s and was the preferred surgery for TGA until the early 1990s. The Mustard and Senning operation involves extensive surgery in the atria and leaves the right ventricle as the systemic ventricle. The Mustard and Senning cohort is now well into adulthood and we begin to see the long-term outcome. METHODS AND RESULTS: All the 6 surgical centers that performed Mustard and Senning operations in Sweden and Denmark identified all operated TGA pat

Contamination of drinking water sources during the rainy season in an urban post-conflict community in Guinea Bissau: implications for sanitation priority.

Since the 1998 civil warcholera outbreaks and waterborne infections have been a major cause of morbidity and mortality during the rainy season in Guinea Bidsau. Our survey aims at: (1) describing the distribution, characteristics and use of water sources and sewage facilities in a central area of the capital city of Bissau; (2) determining the microbiological quality of drinking water during the rainy season. After mapping of the Cuntum 3 study area, water sources' and latrines' location, characteristics and use were determined by visual inspection and interviews with householders. Microbiolog
