Different ecological patterns of abundant and rare microbial communities across wetlands formation and succession after land-use change.

Abundant and rare microorganisms play distinct yet critical ecological and evolutionary roles, and understanding their characteristics and responses to environmental change is essential for improving ecological prediction and informing ecosystem management. Here, we investigated the community patterns of abundant and rare bacterial and fungal taxa along a land-use gradient from farmland to naturally successional wetlands and an artificially managed wetland in coal-mining subsidence areas. Results showed that during wetland formation and succession, rare subcommunities exhibited higher communit

Pathology and Mineralogy of the Pneumoconioses.

Pneumoconioses represent the spectrum of lung diseases caused by inhalation of respirable particulate matter small enough (typically <5-µm diameter) to reach the terminal airways and alveoli. Pneumoconioses primarily occur in occupational settings where workers perform demanding and skilled manual labor including mining, construction, stone fabrication, farming, plumbing, electronics manufacturing, shipyards, and more. Most pneumoconioses develop after decades of exposure, though shorter latencies can occur from more intense particulate matter exposures. In this review, we summarize the indust

Retained Foreign Object Signals a Dangerous Atmosphere in the Operating Room.

A retained foreign object (RFO), also known as an unintentionally retained foreign object (URFO) or a retained surgical item (RSI), is an object retained after skin closure following an invasive procedure. After falls, it is the second most reported sentinel event (SE). Several factors increase the risk of RFO: intraoperative blood loss, longer duration of operation, more sub-procedures, lack of (or incorrect) surgical counts, more than one surgical team, and unexpected intraoperative factors. Unclear policies regarding the counting responsibility, the handling of surgical specimens, the invol

Pulmonary cavity with black sputum in COVID-19-Pneumoconiosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Black sputum is scarce in clinical work. Pulmonary cavities with black sputum are more common in fungal infections and inhalation of a large amount of dust rarely. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old young man went to the hospital several times because of Black sputum after being infected with COVID-19 and was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. The chest computerized tomography (CT) showed multiple high-density mass shadows in both lungs, accompanied by cavity formation. Bronchoscopy showed carbon foam was deposited in bilateral bronchial mucosa without new organisms, and the bronchial

Causes of death among Federal Black Lung Benefits Program beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare, 1999-2016.

BACKGROUND: Coal miners with totally disabling pneumoconiosis are eligible for benefits through the Federal Black Lung Benefits Program (FBLP). We identify the causes of death among Medicare beneficiaries with a claim for which the FBLP was the primary payer and compare these causes of death to all deceased Medicare beneficiaries to better understand elevated death and disease among miners with occupational respiratory exposures. METHODS: From 1999 to 2016 Medicare data, we extracted beneficiary and National Death Index data for 28,003 beneficiaries with an FBLP primary payer claim. We summar

Lung-function impairment among US underground coal miners, 2005 to 2009: geographic patterns and association with coal workers' pneumoconiosis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate contemporary geographic distributions of lung-function impairment and radiographic evidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and their associations. METHODS: From 2005 to 2009, 6373 underground coal miners completed a health survey, including spirometry testing and chest radiography. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis and progressive massive fibrosis were determined by NIOSH B readers, using the International Labour Office classification. Prevalences of CWP and spirometry less than lower normal limits were mapped by county, and their association assessed. RESULTS: Th

Extrapulmonary silicosis: a clinical, morphologic, and ultrastructural study.

A variety of silicotic lesions derived from thoracic silicosis via lymphohematogenous spread to the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and extrathoracic lymph nodes are described. The morphologic features of these lesions depend on the extent of macrophage aggregation, the occurrence of fibrogenesis, and the development of necrosis and degradative changes in macrophages and adjacent extracellular matrix, presumably caused by lysosomal enzymes released from macrophages. Ultrastructurally, the degenerative alterations of matrix material include longitudinal splitting and breakage of collagen fibrils in

The effect of public controversy on occupational health problems: byssinosis.

The effect of the byssinosis controversy on surveillance programs in the cotton textile industry is reviewed. The federally regulated format for industry medical surveillance guarantees neither automatic reduction of cotton dust exposure for high-risk workers nor wage rate retention for workers who are transferred to less dusty job sites. The absence of universal guidelines for worker management, combined with doubt over the severity and prevalence of byssinosis, encourages employers to evaluate medical surveillance programs primarily on the basis of their economic impact. When employers use t

Engineering application and optimization of a synergistic air curtain-wet vortex dust control system at continuous miner faces.

This study addresses the critical challenge of controlling high-concentration dust generated during continuous miner operations, particularly during right-side brushing and cutting of medium-hard and harder strata, where dust readily disperses and conventional wet dust removal techniques struggle to achieve full coverage and high efficiency. Conducted at the 3,305 rubber-auxiliary haulage gallery in Weiqiang Coal Mine, Yulin, Shaanxi Province, this research proposes a synergistic dust control strategy integrating a wet vortex dust collector with a lateral air curtain produced by a wall-attache

Early life exposure to an episode of extreme air pollution and lung function later in childhood: the Hazelwood early life follow-up (ELF)study.

BACKGROUND: Children are particularly vulnerable to air pollution, but the effects of early life exposure to acute, high-intensity pollution on later lung function remain poorly understood. We assessed the association between prenatal or infant exposure to fire-related fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from a six-week coal mine fire and subsequent lung function. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 213 children established to evaluate health effects of coalmine fire exposure. Individual daily mean and peak exposures to fire-related PM2.5 were estimated using location diaries. Lun

A task exposure database for use in the alumina and primary aluminium industry.

A task exposure database (TED) was developed to facilitate data collation for construction of a task exposure matrix (TEM) for Healthwise, a series of studies on cancer and respiratory morbidity in the alumina and primary aluminium industry. Following the construction of job classifications for the eight study sites, the site hygienists identified all historical air monitoring time-weighted average (TWA) data, from their respective sites. The earliest data were sampled in the late 1970s, and over 17,000 personal samples were recorded over the eight sites over a twenty-year period. TED, a Micro

Radiographic features of importance in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-administered Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program: characterising the use of the 'other symbols'.

OBJECTIVE: The National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health-administered Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) provides radiographic pneumoconiosis screening for US coal miners. Radiographs are classified by readers according to International Labour Office criteria. In addition to pneumoconiotic parenchymal and pleural lung abnormalities, readers document radiographic features of importance (other symbols). Other symbols are not meant to imply a diagnosis or interpretation but are relevant as they provide information beyond a pneumoconiosis classification for features relate

An examination of antecedents to coal miners' hearing protection behaviors: a test of the theory of planned behavior.

PROBLEM: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's [NIOSH] National Occupational Research Agenda (DHHS Publication No. 96-115) reports that approximately 50% of miners will experience hearing loss by age 50, compared to only 9% of the general population. The present investigation examines three antecedents believed to be associated with miner's use of hearing protection. METHOD: A posttest-delayed-posttest-control group field research design was employed to assess antecedents toward wearing hearing protection. RESULTS: Following the initial posttest, miners' attitudes and s

[Paget-von Schroetter syndrome as an occupational accident].

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: Two men and one woman developed typical symptoms of a thrombosis in the arms after unusual physical effort at their work place (a coal miner after a bad fall, a radiographer after having to catch a patient, a painter after jerkily moving a heavy piece of furniture). INVESTIGATIONS AND DIAGNOSIS: In all three patients a thrombosis of the subclavian vein was demonstrated by duplex scans or phlebography. In two patients tests for hypercoagulability were unremarkable. None of the patients had a thoracic outlet syndrome. TREATMENT AND COURSE: After initial local thr

[Long-term follow-up study on sequelae of carbon monoxide poisoning; serial investigation 33 years after poisoning].

1. We examined 156 patients 33 years after CO poisoning occurred at the Miike Mikawa Mine, Fukuoka, Japan. The subjects were classified according to age as follows: between 55 and 59 years (n = 14), 60 and 69 years (n = 62), 70 and 79 years (n = 60), and 80 and 87 years (n = 18). The mean age was 69.2 years old. Concerning the duration of coma that occurred soon after the accident, 64 remained comatose from 0 to 6 hours, 46 from 6 to 12 hours and 46 from 12 to 48 hours. 2. Subjective symptoms were observed in 96.8% of the patients. Among them, forgetfulness was noted in 89.7%, followed by irri

High-resolution CT in the evaluation of occupational and environmental disease.

The most common of the pneumoconioses are silicosis, CWP, and asbestosis. The former two are characterized by the presence of small nodular opacities predominantly distributed in the upper zones of the lung. The small nodular opacities are classified into two patterns on HRCT: (1) ill-defined fine branching lines and (2) well-defined discrete nodules. Asbestosis demonstrates thickened interlobular and intralobular lines, subpleural dot-like or curvilinear opacities, and honeycombing on HRCT, predominantly distributed in the bases of the lungs. Although HRCT findings of other pneumoconioses are

Different regional gray matter loss in recent onset PTSD and non PTSD after a single prolonged trauma exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Gray matter loss in the limbic structures was found in recent onset post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients. In the present study, we measured regional gray matter volume in trauma survivors to verify the hypothesis that stress may cause different regional gray matter loss in trauma survivors with and without recent onset PTSD. METHOD: High resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were obtained from coal mine flood disaster survivors with (n = 10) and without (n = 10) recent onset PTSD and 20 no trauma exposed normal controls.
