INTRODUCTION: Results of hearing perception with patient with auditory and visual neuropathy combined with peripheral polyneuropathy one year after cochlear implantation are presented in this article. Visual problems and hearing loss were progressing during recent years leading to social problems and communication disability. Speech discrimination was much worse than could be suspected based on pure tone audiometry. Lack of benefit from hearing aids was also stated.
METHODOLOGY: As the examination method free field speech audiometry was used based on Pruszewicz word tests and set of modified …

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in post-meningitic patients and its impact on surgical decision.
METHOD: The pre-operative MRI data and auditory brainstem response (ABR) examination of five post-meningitic patients were studied. They were implanted with cochleas.
RESULT: The interval between the onset of bacterial meningitis and the hearing loss was (15.8 +/- 15.0)d and it was longer in children than adults. Five ears showed membranous cochlear labyrinth abnormality; 3 ears had vestibule vestibule abnormality; 8 ears demonstrated semicir

OBJECTIVE: Bilateral deafness due to mumps is rare. Here report three cases of bilateral total deafness due to mumps and their outcome of cochlear implantation.
METHOD: Three cases of bilateral total deafness due to mumps were reviewed.
RESULT: All patients had sudden bilateral total deafness in 3 to 7 days after mumps. 2 had vestibular symptoms. Cochlear implantation has been successful in all 3 patients. Three month after the initial mapping, Case 2 who has been wearing bilateral hearing aids and received one-year language training has the best outcome of hearing and speech than the other …

Since 1989, 40 patients have received implants in the O.R.L. ward of the Hôpital d'Enfants Armand Trousseau (Paris). Over the past 2 years, … tory of bacterial meningitis, it can detect signs of labyrinthine ossification which contraindicate cochlear implantation. These signs are not always visible using tomodensitometry, especially when fibrosis within the canal has not yet ossified. This examination also provides for post-operative confirmation of implant position in case of failure or complication. Over t …

A child with well-documented total bilateral deafness as a result of meningitis contracted at the age of 2 years and 8 months demonstrated remarkably delayed recovery of hearing 14 months later. In the meantime cochlear implantation had been performed. Hearing returned partially in the nonimplanted ear and also in the ear implanted with a long multi-electrode intracochlear array, giving unaided thresholds at frequencies from 0.5 to 4 kHz of 60-80 dB and 90-105 dB, respectively. Despite this rare occurrence, it is concluded that a delay until 6 months after meningitis before implantation is app…

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding fitting parameters and receptive and expressive language development in cochlear-implanted children (CCI) with profound sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The aim of the study was to evaluate a group of ASD CCI users in order to describe their ASD clinical features and CCI outcomes; report on the average electrical charge requirements; and evaluate the possible correlations between electrical and psychophysical outcomes with ASD characteristics.

Cochlear implants (CI) are widely used in children and adults to restore hearing function. However, CI outcomes are vary widely. The affected factors have not been well understood. It is well known that the right and left hemispheres play different roles in auditory perception in adult normal hearing listeners. It is unknown how the implantation side may affect the outcomes of CIs. In this study, the effect of the implantation side on how the brain processes frequency changes within a sound was examined in 12 right-handed adult CI users. The outcomes of CIs were assessed with behaviorally meas

To develop totally implantable middle ear and cochlear implants, a miniature microphone that is surgically easy to implant and has a high sensitivity in a sufficient range of audio frequencies is needed. Of the various implantable acoustic sensors under development, only micro electro-mechanical system-type acoustic sensors, which attach to the umbo of the tympanic membrane, meet these requirements. We describe a new vibro-acoustic hybrid implantable microphone (VAHIM) that combines acceleration and sound pressure sensors. Each sensor can collect the vibration of the umbo and sound pressure of

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implantation is an effective auditory rehabilitation strategy for those with profound hearing loss, including those with residual low frequency hearing through use of hybrid cochlear implantation techniques. Post-mortem studies demonstrate the nearly ubiquitous presence of intracochlear fibrosis and neo-ossification following cochlear implantation. Current evidence suggests post-implantation intracochlear fibrosis is associated with delayed loss of residual acoustic hearing in hybrid cochlear implant (CI) recipients and may also negatively influence outcomes in traditional…

CONCLUSION: Robotic-assisted cochlear implantation resulted in less trauma occurrence compared to manual insertion. INTRODUCTION: Preservation of residual hearing after cochlear implantation remains challenging. There are several approaches to preserve residual hearing, but the configuration of the implant electrode array seems to play a major role. Lateral wall electrode arrays are seemingly more favorable in this context. To date, there are no experimental data available which correlate the spatial electrode position in the scala tympani with the extent of hearing preservation.
METHODS: Based on micro-computed tomography (µCT) imaging data, this study analyses the exact position of a pure silicone electr…

Background/Objectives: A Cochlear implantation (CI) is well-established auditory rehabilitation for severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), yet outcomes vary widely among implantees. Even with advancements in surgical methods and device technology, CI is still commonly applied as a generally uniform procedure, with limited attention to the underlying cause of SNHL. This review aims to summarize current evidence supporting etiology-based personalization of CI and to examine how etiology influences electrode selection, implantation timing, and clinical outcomes. BACKGROUND: Enhanced auditory processing and cognitive flexibility associated with musical training have led to the proposition of preimplant musicianship, defined as musical training and/or experience before cochlear implantation (CI), as a potential modifier of outcomes following CI. While CI is a widely used intervention for severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss, substantial interindividual variability in CI outcomes persists. The relationship between preimplant musicianship and postimplant performance remains incompletely understood and has not been systematically synthesized. The …
